work that she’s doing today and why body
cosmetics is growing as such a big
category in the market finally we’ll
wrap up the show today by going through
and talking a little bit about how she’s
growing her companies things that she’s
planning for the holiday for the company
and some advice that she gives to others
who were thinking about creating their
own product line as we get started let
me just tell you a bit about Melanie she
has over 20 years of professional makeup
artistry experience
she’s known in the industry as the
experts for the expert for creating
flawless skin from head to toe Melanie
was credited by Allure magazine of
bringing glam back to Hollywood and
revolutionising the body for television
welcome Melanie I’m delighted to have
you with
today hi patty thank you so much I’m
happy to be here too
so um tell us a little bit about the
backstory how did you end up being in
Hollywood as a makeup artist okay so you
know when I was younger and I wanted to
do projects I was very inspired by MTV
always was I inspired by makeup because
of my family I come from a very colorful
family a wonderful women oriented family
very strong on the women’s side of my
family and so they were all very
involved in color in one way or another
so my whole life I was very inspired by
that color like my grandma
my great grandmother Nana who was very
implemented influential to me she was
very into pastel she was had pastel blue
eyeshadow on with a pastel pink lip her
house was white and creams and like full
of pastels and then my grandma my Gigi
very jazzy her husband was a famous jazz
pianist you know her house is rich warm
red tones vibrant red vibrant cobalt
blues greens mustards Gold’s anomic cup
was actually a guy named Wade red
gorgeous hair with like hunter green
green makeup or Russ or bronze and you
know she was real jazzy with her makeup
he would go and put her face on for an
hour and that was a term I grew up with
and then my aunt’s as well
my mom hippie-dippie but I was raised in
a house and the seventies at that rust
carpet that yellow and so I was very
influenced by color and then as I was
finding myself MTV was definitely a huge
inspiration of mine and what I found
most exciting was to put together music
videos or fashion shows and of course I
kind of ended up being the one to do the
makeup I really had no idea at that time
that I would be a makeup artist I
honestly never thought of it as a career
even though I
have lots of friends whose parents or
brothers were actors in Hollywood my own
family is very Hollywood related my my
great-grandfather was the manager of the
Pantages ales happy time my Nana was
worked at the box office there my Nana
also used to assist sister Reece and
then I have again all my other aunts and
uncles heavily involved in theatre so
that was you know Hollywood was always
music etre
movies and then I had the opportunity in
junior college to go to Italy and Greece
with a humanitarian class that I loved
and changed my life and on that trip I
fell in love with illy and I fell in
love with Europe and I thought oh my god
you know I got to get over here I found
myself really entrenched in art and the
museum’s and the sculptures architecture
the bridges the buildings just the
people to food everything about that
that whole area and that time of my life
was heavily inspired by all of that
everything had an artistic note for me
and I was fortunate enough after
traveling there on that trip and then a
few others I started taking Italian and
German and French actually while I was
in junior college and I came across in
the language lab a note that said hey
you know live and learn in Italy and I
just took off the tab and called it and
booked it we moved to Florence and we
went to the University of Dundee
forensic Hair Spray daddy which is
basically the University of Florence for
strangers
we took language and and art and it was
just an it was just amazing it was just
such an amazing time of my life I met
tons of European friends and I’m still
friends with to this day and then what
happened is after I lived there for a
year I traveled heavily back and forth
for seven years and so I would waitress
at home and kind of save up my money for
three months and then I’d go and travel
for three months and I kind of couch hop
with all the friends that I had made and
on one of those trips I was in Milan and
an Icelandic friend of mine wanted was
getting ready to sign up for a makeup
class so he said come on down with me
and let’s go sign it up walked into this
old Gunnery cathedral were at first of
course the building just took my breath
away
and then it happened to be like the last
day of the year-long course and
everybody was like putting together a
big show and putting forward their best
work and I just walked in and I just
thought wow you can make money doing
makeup you know I always had fun with it
I was always the one doing all my
friends makeup when we would go to
parties or clubs or dances or whatever
it was and like I said I had a big
passion for the directing of these like
little videos and stuff we did and did
the makeup but I never thought of it
further than that
no I actually signed up for the class
and came home and talked to my Nana
about it and he was you know my biggest
supporter but also my Thunder right I
pitched the idea to her and I was
shocked to have her say no I don’t think
it’s a good idea we just were on this
whole other path what happened to that
you wanted to be an interpreter and her
biggest thing was the industry is very
hard on women because of course she had
been through it so she kind of opposed
it and I was shocked and just like and
that same week I’m in my hairdressers
getting my hair done and I’m complaining
now I almost had the opportunity to go
to this wonderful makeup school and oh
my god and I think I might want to do
makeup and she’s like you should talk to
my roommate she’s a makeup artist in the
Union no joke happened to run into them
in a bar later and we just
headed off and about two to three days
later this woman Michelle Warner calls
me up and says I just got called to
enter non-film
and I’m beyond that but this is perfect
for you you should do this and I just
was like oh whoa I know I was just
absolutely scared I just said gosh I’ve
never done makeup professionally I’ve
never really even been on a real
professional set
I just don’t think this is right she
said listen I’m going to drive you down
there and she drove me down there and
the trailer was on Hollywood Boulevard
I’ll never forget it looking at the
Hollywood sign and I walked in it was
their first day of shooting and they
were the artists were just basically
desperate it was the middle of the
summer there on location it’s hot
they’re understaffed and their first
question to me was what is your sign
Aquarion oh they gave me the chance told
me to bring a makeup tool belt and get
the next data to work I had like a 4:00
a.m. call and I went out and literally
bought a tool belt from Home Depot and
showed up the next day which was to this
day still quite the laughing I mean it’s
really quite the joke but it’s
hysterical
that’s so funny in any and really all
along the way you were just taking leaps
after leap after leak where’d the
courage come from I don’t know I think
that’s just that’s in me I’ve always
been super courageous moved act out of
my house actually when I was 15 I moved
in with a boy from when I was 17 I was
always a worker I was always like
hustling babysitting jobs or you know
car washing or whatever I could do from
the time that I was like 10 and then my
first job was at mrs. Fields Cookies and
then it was Charlotte Russe and I have
always just worked and I have just
always been like I’ve always had that
dream to be something more and make my
family proud it was always about making
my family proud
yeah I don’t know I I have always been
courageous I still think I am and yeah I
just jumped into it I mean I would say
that there’s a lot of fate kind of
involved with it a lot of karma and a
lot of luck but that job basically took
me from meeting the hairstylist on that
show who took me from to all these you
know low-budget indie horror films like
the dentist to the wishmaster to so I
did a lot of special effects in my
earlier years and then she left to go to
film in India which then left me in
charge and then that one of those films
went Union and then it’s like a whole
nother ladder to climb and then I
finally landed Dancing with the Stars
which was like the real big diving board
I guess you could call it into Who I am
or you know what I’m doing now and so
then that’s and that’s a great segue so
you so you ended up on doing the makeup
makeup for Dancing with the Stars was
that the catalyst to you making the
decision to open up your own cosmetic
brand yes even though I still had no
idea what I was doing that is where that
originated from basically on Dancing
with the Stars that Pro dancers are like
seriously literally addicted to sunless
tanning especially about 1516 years ago
when the show first started you know you
were taking cues from the pro dancers
who were you know literal real Pro
dancers and who do their makeup and hair
very extreme and do their make their
body makeup as dark dark dark as it can
be because they’re dancing in these big
crowds and they need to stand out and
they just become addicted to it and the
problem with that is that it starts to
dehydrate their skin crack their skin it
turns into all sorts of crazy colors and
streaks and I had never dealt with
sunless tanning before I found myself
spending the majority of my time fixing
their bodies trying all these different
body makeups understanding sunless
tanning I actually became a brand
ambassador for San Tropez and helped
develop some of their their Jana’s and
you know just really wrapping my brain
about it
but when wardrobes still complaining
because the body makeups getting all
over the place or all the many different
reasons of why I ended up just sitting
there and the trailer mixing up a bunch
of stuff and that is literally how gleen
body but radiance is born the dancers
themselves actually called it gleam
because once they tried it on they were
like oh my god this is it Mel I’m
gleaming I love this where’s the gleam
I’m not going to dance without the Glee
that’s how it began and I actually in
the beginning was trying to get another
brand to kind of in a way buy it off of
me and one really great friend of mine
gleet who’s the founder of galactic said
I’m interested but I think you can do
this on your own I’m going to give you a
contact to a lab and if it ends up being
something you can’t do then you come
back and that’s how it began and I
remember thinking Oh mom because my mom
and my grandma are my backbone and also
the investors to the company and you
know they were completely just in love
and enthralled with everything I was in
doing and Mike my great-grandma god
bless her did pass peacefully and and
you know at a wonderful age of 97 and
she did leave us a little bit of an
inheritance and and that’s how gleam
started but I had no business plan which
is something I do not recommend I really
no idea what I was doing
I really never I’m not I don’t come from
like the business background that set
mindset and I just I even remember
thinking oh here’s the cost of goods and
okay oh and then if we sell this many
we’re going to make this I didn’t take
anything else in well you didn’t mean
that you don’t know what you don’t know
you know right but so what would you
when you look back on the journey what
would you say in terms of actually
opening the business what was the
hardest part of the journey
finding the right team I spent years you
know with people that really were not
right and because I’m still a working
makeup artist even to this day but
especially then when you know the
company couldn’t afford you know to or I
could not afford to not work so I was
still working in 7080 hours on the set
and so I was surrounding myself with
people that literally just were not
right they just were not right and so I
made a lot of expensive mistakes they
made a lot of expensive mistakes I feel
that I because I was in the Dancing with
the Stars train I saw how important CR
and marketing was but I’d go VIN to a
company and paid a lot of money in PR
when I really wasn’t quite ready yet
mm-hmm so I would say finding the right
team and really budgeting my money the
right way also I will tell you that with
you know reps at labs like you have to
be careful cuz better there to make a
dime – and I got talked into you know
producing what hey more than I needed so
I spent a lot of money up front with
that when I wasn’t selling it fast
enough and you know that’s that that’s
such an important point because you know
a lot of people get into this business
and they go to these labs and oh five
thousand ten thousand units are as
normally the minimum and unless you have
a a buyer that’s going to buy that that
is absolutely the kiss of death for most
most brands so I love the fact that you
shared that what do you think is the
thing you love most about the journey so
far well I mean like I said I was did
not come from a business background I
you know but I now I can proudly say I
am a businesswoman so I feel proud to
have something that’s lasted six years
and
finally have hit the million dollar mark
I feel proud to have a team wrong that’s
surrounding me and proud that I have the
story that I have and more than anything
the product really truly is a fabulous
and unique different product and I’m
proud to have been a trendsetter in this
whole Glo situation that’s happened you
know I’m just proud I’m exhausted right
still working on set and I and then now
on top of it I travel so much with the
company because we’ve done the
grassroots PR by you know getting it in
front of as many faces as possible with
trade shows and pop-up shops and
anything and everything I can do so
between the set and having a family and
running the business and traveling it’s
it’s hard but I do the light at the end
of the tunnel I have to keep positive
and motivate myself sometimes with that
it is there as much as I love the set
and coming from the set my future goal
will be to have my own studio and just
focus on gleam photo shoot gleam
campaigns those types of things of
course I might dip my toe into them
addicted here and there but the 40 to 80
hours a week on a set can get incredibly
brutal and it’s just it’s a lot but
you’re you know you are you’re the
living embodiment a poster child for
really all of the things that it takes
to be successful you’ve mentioned it the
hard work the dedication the resources
but one of the things that you mentioned
as well that I like to point out to our
listeners is that you’ve surpassed that
milestone of a million dollars a year in
revenue in most businesses most women
particularly start businesses without an
understanding that that million dollars
is so important because it gives you the
revenue resources that you need to grow
the business and so congratulations I
mean that’s just a huge milestone to
have been able to get to that point

Emmy award-winning makeup artist
Melanie Mills and we’re talking about
her Melanie Mills cosmetic brand Melanie
tell us a little bit about the overall
brand and why it’s different than other
brands that are in the marketplace okay
well you know first and foremost I
developed it out of my need while
working on a hit television show Dancing
with the Stars and more than anything I
tested it on actual celebrities and the
most critical critiques or Kristy the
most critique is the critiques of the
pro dancers because that’s who I was
really trying to satisfy so I would say
just the birthplace alone is very unique
but it is a gorgeous body makeup that’s
the hero product glean body radiance
which I’ve turned into a sweet step body
pick what’s super unique about because
let’s face it as body makeup is really
becoming a standard now in the beginning
it was like sunless tanning is how you
kind of dipped your toe in with it
people that have maybe some really
intense leg scarring or varicose veins
that needed cover-up there is some some
body makeups out there but other than
the celebrities were makeup artists you
know we’re doing them from head to toe
it seemed unattainable so you know now
every brand has at least a body shimmer
a body glow a body powder there’s you
know self tanners are very common now
and and it’s a common you know thing so
what’s different about mine is that I’m
a snob about ingredients I wanted it to
be amazing
I wanted the ingredients to to function
more than just a body make up by so
basically I have ingredients in there
that are skin tightening wrinkle filling
it has been dermatologically
dermatologically tested you can use it
on your face so there’s very I don’t
even know actually have another body
product out there that you can use on
your face and it I haven’t actually gone
to test with this yet which I should
because the letters that I get and the
people that come to me with eczema and
psoriasis that are so happy and in love
with my product especially as a primer
on their face because it doesn’t inflame
it and it helps to camouflage and create
a beautiful velvet glowing base for
their foundation is remarkable the first
ingredient is water there’s a hobo oil
aloe vera vitamin E olive oil
it’s almost natural accept that there
are preservatives in it and there is a
bond in it that does help to make it
transfer resistant if I didn’t have
those two in it it would be organic and
natural so it’s just it’s and the unique
thing is is that it started off with
four shades I now have five I’m about
ready to launch sixth what’s really cool
is that it’s multicultural so really
dark skin tones and really pale skin
tones can use any of the shades the
product is at first very pigmented and
almost a metallic and a little kind of
unfamiliar at first if you’re not used
to it but then it just literally melts
into the skin becomes one with the skin
offers all these different finishes from
a shimmer a glow just basic matching
your tone and perfecting it or using it
to tan or bronze well so five shades but
waving the let me understand
so five shades and the lightest of skin
tones and the darkest of skintone can
use all five yeah Wow
okay and it’s just the application I
mean it’s really like so for example
right now my
shade is called peach deluxe and it’s a
really beautiful champagne II peachy
color and on pale people it is like a
like a skin Perfector and just simple
glow super super pale it’s going to be a
kiss of color medium tones is just going
to be like a stunning glow but a
Perfector as well and then the darker
skin tones it’s more of like a highlight
interesting my deepest shade deep gold
on a super dark tone is going to be like
a skin Perfector the bronze will be like
a bronzer but then those two shades on
on on lighter skin tones will be a tan
or bronze so just depends on the shade
that you choose and of course you can
mix them and it’s just it’s a really
easy product you put it in just like
your lotion we actually say replace it
replace your lotion with it it dries to
a dry finish and it doesn’t get all over
the place it’s just it’s just stunning
so that’s the hero product and then I
created a radiant dust which is made up
of the same pearl that makes up the
color within the creams it’s a very
expensive high grade mineral out of
Germany and the dust has been very
finely milled into these gorgeous
shimmery and loose powders that you can
layer on top of a like shade of the
glean body radiance or you can mix it up
and just kind of have fun but then that
adds to pop a little bit more glow and
then I’ve got my gorgeous sealing spray
that you can use to lock it all in it is
a very transfer resistant makeup however
is a makeup and there is a possibility
of it moving the great news about that
is if it does it doesn’t stain but I did
develop this alien spray more than
anything for those really high humidity
climates so it’s a one-two-three system
and it’s really really unique and it’s
luxurious
however it’s attainable you know I like
to say that this is for every woman star
quality Beauty for every woman every day
so I really do take it to the set I
develop everything on
set with my colleagues my pro makeup
artists and my celebrities and bring it
to those at home to look and feel
fabulous and so and it would say that
sounds so delicious that I did you know
will want people to be able to have that

of formulating did you know what
ingredients you wanted to go into the
product in order to get these different
types of results I have to say that I
worked really closely with the lab you
know I’m not a chemist and so as a
makeup artist I know what I want I know
what how I want it to blend how I want
it to settle how I want it to last you
know I work with all skin tones and I
actually work with quite a few more than
anything actually darker skin tone so
you know that part of the market was
lacking especially in body makeup and so
I needed something that could work on
every skin tone can melt into the skin
beautifully and flawlessly lasts all day
long and then of course my biggest
challenge on especially Dancing with the
Stars was sweating and rubbing all over
each other and dancing and getting it on
the Wardrobe and if it did get on the
Wardrobe the staining so I went to the
lab with this formula that I kind of
created of a whole bunch of different
things and said this is correct this is
what I want but I need it to do this
this and that I want it to be good for
your skin I want it to be used on the
face I want it smell like this I want it
to be water-based I want it to not stay
and I want it to be able to tighten the
skin and reduce cellulite and you know
so you that’s where I went and it took
three two and a half years to formulate
two and a half years yeah so it’s not
it’s not overnight really trial and
error that went through that process
exactly no it was it was it was a labor
of love all right well we’re going to

I’m here with Melanie Mills of Melanie
Mills cosmetics and we’re talking about
her three-step product line that is
designed for full body makeup so Melanie
tell us a little bit about I know you
you this was born out of working on the
set for Dancing with the Stars tell us
about some of the work that you’re doing
now I have currently been over at
Nickelodeon I have been there for almost
10 years and I have been doing
everything from icarly Victoria salmon
cat game shakers and my my current baby
is I’m in the fourth season of Henry
danger so that’s that takes up a lot of
my time and then I have been the head
makeup artist for the real daytime
television talk show I’m in my third
season for the show and my my part of
that particular show is trembling all
the guest celebrities models anything
and everything besides the main host
they have their own their own personals
so those are my two onset jobs and then
I run the social media for Mike Renee
and the rest of running the company
formulating that good stuff right and
when when you think about this catted or
category of body cosmetics why do you
think it’s really taken off as a
category
I think one of the main reasons honestly
is social media media mainly Instagram
YouTube you know I think that before
body makeup seemed like a challenge and
different and not something that you
want to do there was lots of worries is
it going to get all over my clothes is
it going to stain my clothes is it going
to get all over my car I mean let’s face
it I can even remember you know putting
on a body shimmer and getting in like a
boyfriend car at black leather and then
like literally the shimmers all over the
car those are like a lot of worries that
go through the everyday woman’s mind
when it comes to body makeup then they
get worried like they compared it to the
sunless Tanner’s because that’s what
they know a little bit more about and
they’re like oh they’re going to streak
is it going to smell is it going to you
know so I think I think the other reason
why it’s super taken off is that because
of social media because these girls are
just you know doing all these different
looks and they’re making a show out of
makeup and themselves and they’re
showing how easy it is to do body makeup
and to do body clothes and and then
they’re showing you like look you got to
complete your look you’re sexy from head
to toe
not just from chin up you know so I
think that’s really why the category has
accelerated and so and it’s true I mean
you know for the last revolution in
terms of cosmetics and fashion really
started back in the I want to say well
I’m not sure exactly what century was
but was the invention of the mirror and
and and the selfie is as this
generations mirror in which you know
we’re wanting to look our very best tell
us a little bit about some tips and
tricks so that someone can can can use
to make themselves look better well I
mean for one I mean of course gleam body
radiance is amazing because you can use
it to just simply add color or glow or
bronze and it’s so easy to use it looks
a little intimidating but you just
squirt it into your hand you can use a
little you can use a lot however much
coverage you want
and I do recommend to rub it into clean
dry skin and then I recommend to use it
as a primer underneath your foundation
for that gorgeous lit from within glow
or lit from within and it just creates
this velvet radiance it’s perfection it
really is but I mean in general tips I
mean like that’s how easy the product is
it really is you put it on and you rub
it on any skin showing under makeup with
makeup on top of makeup and you can have
fun with the shades like I said you can
wear any of them and then you can top it
off with the the radiant dust on your
shoulders and your collarbone or you can
also use the dust without the cream you
can use the dust with a brush and stroke
it down the middle right to create a
lengthening visual so you can actually
use body makeup to tone and diminish
cellulite and to actually help make you
look thinner and leaner and longer but
let’s face it there’s nothing sexier
than like a shimmering you know glowing
shoulder decollete you can use these
products for eyeshadows blushers
bronzers so I think like simple just
like even simply topping color on your
cheeks lips and some Aska is is is one
way to make somebody feel fabulous I’m a
big advocate about getting eyebrows done
professionally waxing dying because then
that’s done and that’s one major step
that you don’t have to worry about
anymore I think that getting your
eyelashes dyed is another awesome thing
to have especially for a couple weeks
specially for vacation because let’s
face it it’s a huge difference and again
done and now you can add the mascara to
volumizing and pump up but I think that
those simple tips and tricks another
biggie that I tell people is don’t
forget your ears when doing makeup don’t
forget your jaw line if your hair is up
don’t forget to put it on the back your
neck because if you just do your face
it’s been so obvious that you have this
like a little bit of makeup on you know
incorporate it everywhere
so that it seems seamless and flawless
and those are absolutely important for
people to understand that there’s all of
these various different types of looks
so if you want to do the glam completely
made-up there’s there’s that that way
that you can go but there’s also these
other really simple things that you
talked about I like the idea of making
sure that you’re doing your waxing and
having your brows arch properly and the
dyeing of the eyelash is one of the
things I did a couple of years ago which
is my absolute favorite is to actually
have my brows and eyeliner tattooed now
there’s obviously you want to get a real
professional to do that but I have to
tell you it is one of my absolute
favorite things because I wake up and at
the beginning of the day and I look
great if I don’t say so myself is so
huge right now and it shocks me how real
they that a good microdermabrasion is it
is shocking how amazing that this new
trend is I think those are I mean
important also I think it’s really
important to get facials exfoliate body
and face I’m a huge fan of Korean spas
I’ve never been scrubbed anywhere else
better than at a Korean spa I mean they
just scrub you from head to toe I think
it’s really important exfoliation and
and getting a proper facial and using
good skincare and you know for us older
ladies I mean or women of you know
maturity whatever you want to call it
I’m 43 you know but my mom my grandma
and I we are all into fillers and boat I
mean anything to make you feel better
seriously and something that can last
and linger but on a natural level right
just to help stimulate that collagen and
just keep you kind of youthful and fresh
I do not think anything’s wrong with it
I know that a lot of people associated
with Hollywood
but it’s again I think something that
people were scared of and didn’t
understand and it’s becoming a little
bit more widespread and a little bit
more of a daily routine of daily part of
a woman’s regimen right yeah and I and
to your point is
everybody’s got their different style
and just find that style I think is the
biggest tip that I love to give as we
conclude this segment is just you know
find your style and and and and own it
and for me it’s I I want to be
comfortable and look my absolute best
and so that’s really exciting to learn
more about what you’re doing we’re going

I’m here with Melanie Mills of Melanie
Mills cosmetics and we’ve been talking
about the wonderful category of body
cosmetics and how that category has
really grown now Melanie you’ve been
successful at getting your business
grown it to a point in which you’ve got
the resources to to start really making
it grow tell us a little bit about some
of the plans that you have ahead in for
the company of course first and foremost
I am a makeup artist so body makeup kind
of came in later out of just a show that
I happen to be on that I had to
understand and make work and be fabulous
but my dream and my goal with the
company is to you know become a full
color line so I have in the works I
shadowed I have primers because the body
makeup is already used on the face it’s
already really popular as a primer so
now I’m taking it to the next step and
just adding even more yummy ingredients
that are more you know more face
friendly and just for deeper hydration
and then a little bit of a different
scent versus the body makeup one so I am
starting to lean into more of the face
and that’s where I hope to finally
eventually go is a full color line but
it sounds like it’s a little bit
different almost like um skin care for
the eyes yeah so yeah yeah I I kind of I
mean if I when I became a makeup artist
did I ever think that like body makeup
is what I would come out with no you
know when I was I am an author of a book
as well called glitter and glam and when
I first became an artist I think that
was my next goal was to be like a Kevin
ekron and to have this book and and this
aesthetic and then you know then come
out with a line
and but you know it kind of was all
little backwards that came out with the
line first or the body makeup first then
the book and then now you know I’m
hoping to venture into full face
cosmetics so yeah that’s kind of the big
dream I have but just working on still
getting like a business plan together
you know hoping to maybe gather some
investors alone you know though I’ve hit
that million dollar mark they’re still
you know that doesn’t mean I’m making it
right you know much if not more I’d like
to spend more I need to spend more to
grow and so I’m kind of at that stage
and so I’m kind of regrouping you know
on the business side trying to get all
that together and just you know
marketing and just strategizing you know
how to to grow to get those dollars in
to get more products in and what the
important part of that story though it
where your ad is that this is the
opportunity to actually start being able
to interact investors because having hit
that milestone of a million dollars
you’ve got proof of concept and I and I
find myself as a business coach working
with beauty brands that it’s very
difficult for companies to understand
that that they want to go out and raise
capital for their idea or they’ve got
you know $100,000 a year in revenue and
now they think they’re going to go find
somebody that’s going to invest in their
business but this is the real point in
which you can can do that
so I think that you’re definitely going
in the right direction tell us a little
bit I love a quote from Mark Cuban of
the shark tank that he says sales solves
all problems you know cures all ills so
what are you guys planning for holiday
in terms of driving sales yes
so for holiday I’m really excited to be
launching a new shade called opalescence
and it is it is our lightest shade you
could call it that it is a white in
color but it again melts into any skin
tone leaving just basically hydrated
perfected skin with like a
lo of an opal finish on the pink side
though so it’s stunning I mean it’s just
perfect for the holidays and winter and
when people are wearing like a little
more clothes and they don’t really
necessarily want to be bronzed they just
want to be illuminating illuminated and
growing and it’s a stunning primer or
tapper up on the cheekbone so it’s the
easiest of the shades and I’m really
excited this was a hard one to nail down
to make it work on the darker skin tones
as well so that’s launching along with
our get it girl collection box which is
this beautiful gold box that will house
all six of our shades in a 1 ounce size
so it’s the perfect gift to pick
collector’s item it’s just it’s fun so
that is what is happening for us for the
holidays that’s great now what are the
types of companies that you want to
partner with to grow the brand well one
company that I have been dancing with is
Beauty Blender because they have a body
blender which is a big gorgeous sponge
that you wet and you can apply body
makeups with so I have a base and body
brush that’s stunning that you can apply
either the dust or the cream with but
you can also use the sponge and Rianne
Silva who is the founder of that company
is a friend of mine and a huge
inspiration to me she you know kind of
started just like I didn’t just but
although she created this tool that’s
like absolutely changed the way people
you know applied makeup in general it’s
amazing so I just I look at her I mean
she’s just amazing she’s been such a
huge inspiration to me and has turned
her idea after gosh I think they just
over 15 years into like a super
successful multi million dollar company
so I totally would like to and I’m
working on that
a kind of collaborating with the the
body blender but other than that more
than anything I’ve been kind of focusing
on working with influencers to tell you
the truth they are the face of their
their their own reality shows that
people are addicted to them they’re
addicted to what they’re doing
I already did do a collaboration shade
with a an influencer named Sondra deluxe
which was very successful for us and as
in terms of sales and this is where kind
of that is but I don’t just partner with
anybody just because I definitely make
sure that they have a love for the brand
that it’s organic that they’ve already
been used brands you know I’m not just
in it to be with somebody for their name
and just for money I really do want them
to love the product so you know and of
course I love all these collaborations
like two-phase and Kat Von D did and I
can really see collaborating in those
ways is that kind of what you meant yeah
yeah that sounds great so as we wrap up
in this last minute can you give us some
quick advice for somebody else who
wanted to open up their own cosmetic
brand or just a company whether no
matter what you’re doing have a story
mmm
there’s a million cosmetics there’s a
million things out there right but I
think people fall in love with the story
right and and the people or the person
or the story behind the brand a story is
so important I have so many people say I
have a mascara that I would really like
to okay what’s your story behind it why
and then you know honestly back to my
original mistake make sure you have a
business plan a strategy a good team
with you those are probably to me the
two super key things to starting a brand
