On this channel, I am sharing the piano arrangements that are arranged by various Christian artists. I am currently a church pianist at the Singapore Life Church and Missions. Some years ago, I started to play a piece of piano arrangement of a hymn weekly before the Sunday service to prepare the hearts of the congregation to enter into worship. I started my collection of hymn piano arrangements since then. I started recording the arrangements in the recent years. I hope that people can liste ...

Heritage Hymns is an insightful, historical journey into the life and times of the gospel hymn writers and the music that forms much of our sacred, traditional, and conservative heritage. Each podcast, less than ten minutes in length, will expose this generation to hymnists like Fanny Crosby, Isaac Watts, P.P. Bliss and countless others. How can we know where we are going without first understanding from whence we came? Thanks for listening!

The Slab. A vast orbiting slum where sweat falls in rain and the gene-spliced come in all shapes and sizes. Inspector Alex McLeod, recently suspended for excessive force and nurturing a growing addiction to bourbon, has been reduced to tending bar when an improbably beautiful vampire comes to him with a bizarre theory: there's a killer on the Slab, a killer with a liking for recreating ancient myth, in bloody and spectacular fashion. But who exactly is this vampire, and how does she know so ...

"Originally modeled on the Psalms and other poetic passages (commonly referred to as "canticles") in the Scriptures, Christian hymns are generally directed as praise and worship to the monotheistic God. Many refer to Jesus Christ either directly or indirectly. Since the earliest times, Christians have sung "psalms and hymns and spiritual songs", both in private devotions and in corporate worship (Matthew 26:30; 1 Cor 14:26; Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16; James 5:13; cf. Revelation 5:8-10; ...

Exploring the Orthodox Faith through Music and Liturgy - The belief that God became Man and dwells among us in Jesus Christ is at the very heart of Christian life and worship. Orthodox worship, therefore, involves the whole person – heart, mind, body and soul. In our services of worship, Christians pray and sing in liturgies that are not of this world. This podcast explores the Orthodox faith through music and liturgy.

This collection of hymns have been translated from the poetry to the Latin church, arranged in the order of the Christian year. ... or How Shall Man Be Just with God?How does salvation work? How does a righteous God declare an unrighteous person to be righteous in His sight? In this comprehensive and devotional study of justification by faith alone in the Person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ, Horatius Bonar answers these questions in a clear and wonderful way. Bonar has been called the prince of Scottish hymn writers. Quoting one of the 600 hymns he wrote, here is "righteous peace securely made" (Summary by Jay R ...

Cædmon was an Anglo-Saxon herdsman attached to the double monastery of Streonæshalch (657–681). Originally ignorant of the art of song, Cædmon learned to compose one night in the course of a dream. Cædmon’s only known surviving work is Cædmon’s Hymn, the nine-line alliterative vernacular praise poem in honour of the Christian god he supposedly learned to sing in his initial dream. The poem is one of the earliest attested examples of Old English and is one of three candidates for the earliest ...

On the weekend that my benighted nation celebrates its birthday, I turn for real leadership to Renata Scotto, specifically her portrayal of the Druid priestess Norma in Vincenzo Bellini’s eponymous cornerstone of the bel canto repertoire. Scotto began her career as a charming lyric-coloratura, lending her distinctive voice and artistic personality …

Scripture teaches that God governs and ordains all things that come to pass. This truth is typically presented in the Bible to instruct and encourage God’s people. Yet Christians tend to think little about God’s providence. Zack and Alex discuss this topic along with the hymn “Whate’er My God Ordains is Right.”…

You might have heard the weepy twang of Nashville-based Luke Schneider playing pedal Steel with Margo Price, or more recently with Orville Peck. But Schneider has just released a new record of experimental and dreamy drone music for the end of the world, called Altar of Harmony. No matter how unrecognizable it might sound, this is ambient atmospher…

Robert Glasper draws together his parallel passions for hip hop and jazz on his 2012 release, Black Radio. In addition to his formal jazz training, the pianist has long navigated the nebulous territory between the two genres – working with artists like Q-Tip, Kanye West, and Erykah Badu. In 2012, The Robert Glasper Experiment (featuring Casey Benja…

The Weather Station's 2015 record Loyalty features eleven songs with that most laudable quality of sounding like they are being sung directly to the listener, and recorded in a small quiet room. Which is all the more remarkable for the fact that the album was actually made in a large tumbledown French chateau outside of Paris. But the intimacy capt…

Nostalgia permeates the blood running through Leon Bridges' debut album, Coming Home. It's unusual for a 25-year-old to be so plugged into the Golden Age of soul and R&B, but with an expansive online music education and an influential mother from the era, it's hard not to be. The Fort Worth native's music is haunted by Sam Cooke's swaying rhythms a…

We're giving this episode over to talk about race in classics. Guitarist Kaki King is perhaps best-known for her virtuosic instrumental guitar compositions and extended technique, but she’s also written songs, chamber music, and film scores. She’s come up with innovations that change the nature of the guitar itself; she taps, she bends, she projects onto the guitar body, and now she has added a bridge called a…

Today’s episode is an interview I did with Ira Siff, artistic director of La Gran Scena Opera Company di New York, alter ego of the beloved “traumatic soprano” Vera Galupe-Borszkh, lecturer for the Metropolitan Opera Guild and Weekly Commentator on the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts. My association with Ira and Gran Scena goes back more than thirty …

Trent Reznor is a thoughtful composer and meticulous sonic manipulator. With Nine Inch Nails, he has constructed ominous, seething and often abrasive songs and dense albums built upon infinite layers of sounds, invoking feelings of pain, rage and doom. And together with British composer, audio engineer, and longtime collaborator Atticus Ross, he ha…

Jake Blount is a singer, fiddler, banjo player, and scholar of old time American music –he’s especially interested in the deep roots of the African-American music of the southeast, where his own family is from. And given that this is Pride month, it’s probably worth mentioning he’s a board member of the group Bluegrass Pride as well. Jake has just …

The first of my two Queer Pride episodes is devoted to a group of pioneering lesbians in the 1970s and beyond, in both classical and pop music. Two iconic mezzo-sopranos whose careers began in the 1960s and extended through the 1990s are the Greek-American Tatiana Troyanos and Brigitte Fassbaender, daughter of the German baritone Willi Domgraf-Fass…

Every song in gathered worship should render praise to God. Doxology should be the governing principle through each element of worship. Yet we believe it’s appropriate for certain songs to strike a pronounced note of praise in a worship service. In this episode, Zack and Alex discuss how to best understand songs of praise. They also review the hymn…

In the early 1970's, veteran Dallas gospel singer Rev. Gean West and his brother Tommie formed The Relatives, a band that pulled together traditional gospel and soul with psychedelia and funk and earned a reputation for their fiery live shows. While the band toured nationally, they recorded only three singles, apparently pressing small batches of 4…

Songwriter, guitarist, bestselling novelist, former nurse, and the mastermind behind The Mountain Goats, John Darnielle delivered an April surprise: a boombox album of songs. As he writes on The Mountain Goats Bandcamp page, "pandemics call for wild measures" - and this was one thing he could do to offset the cost of a cancelled spring tour. The al…

Several weeks ago I began a series on particular vocal and artistic qualities that I find most important in a singer’s artistic profile. I had already done episodes on Charm and Glamour. Then the BLM protests intervened and I felt impelled to respond with two episodes examining Protest in Music. Today I resume my previous series with that all-impor…
