In April of 1942 the Imperial Japanese Army steamrolled through Burma, capturing the only ground from India to China, leaving the US only one way to supply the free Chinese with war materials to defend themselves.- and that was the extremely dangerous air route across the Himalayas. Many pilots and crews never survived "the Hump" as it became known, and those who who lucky enough to bail out still had to survive the jungles. Author Caroline Alexander shares details of the entire CBI (China-Burma-India) theater and the kind of men it took to survive it.
