Scripture: Isaiah 65:9, Isaiah 46:9-10, Deuteronomy 28:58-67, Deuteronomy 29:22-23, Jeremiah 31:35-37, Isaiah 11:11-12, Luke 21:24, Ezekiel 36:33-35, Luke 13:35, Romans 9:5, Romans 11:12-15. We continue to look at God’s fingerprints that are readily observable but often overlooked, things that testify to God’s goodness, faithfulness, power and promises. The Living God is true, genuine, near and He keeps His word! 2,700 years ago God declared through His prophet Isaiah that he knows how everything turns out in the end. He knows the end from the beginning and he will accomplish everything He has said he will do. “Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.’” Isaiah 46:9-10 In today’s study we will look at the way those promises of God have been fulfilled through the ages and apply that to our lives, today. Children of Israel: ⁃ Scattered worldwide - Deuteronomy 28:58-64 “If you disobey Me, then I will scatter you.” (Not as punishment but to return you to Me.) Two times this has happened to the Jewish people ⁃ At the Babylonian captivity ⁃ and again in 70AD until 1948. ⁃ Endlessly persecuted - Deuteronomy 28:65-67. No other people in the history of the world have suffered the kind of endless persecution that the Jewish people have endured. ⁃ Land desolated - Deuteronomy 29:22-27. Land of Israel was once a land of milk and honey, vibrant, alive and prosperous and became a desolate wasteland. ⁃ Nation preserved - Jeremiah 31:35-37. God promises He will not forsaken them - they would be preserved ⁃ People regathered - Isaiah 11:11-12. Currently, there are more Jewish people in Israel than in the USA ⁃ Jerusalem reclaimed - Luke 21:24. This took place in 1967. ⁃ Land restored - Ezekiel 36:33-35. Wasteland will become like Eden. Pastor shared how he has witnessed the change in the land over the last decade of his visits there. Desert has begun to bloom, cities are springing up and ancient town are growing. This list - the words of God that were spoken - are things that have taken place just as they were predicted - showing us the Fingerprints of God on history. A darkness of heart came on the Jewish people and as a result the message of Jesus has spread to the gentile world. God is merciful and faithful - even though many Jewish people rejected Messiah when He came. Romans 11:12,15 “Now if the Gentiles were enriched because the people of Israel turned down God’s offer of salvation, think how much greater a blessing the world will share when they finally accept it. For since their rejection meant that God offered salvation to the rest of the world, their acceptance will be even more wonderful. It will be life for those who were dead!” Many Jewish people rejecting Jesus as the Messiah, meant the message of Jesus was spread throughout the non-Jewish world and not billions confess Jesus as Savior and believe in God the Creator who is the God of the prophecies. Their rejection of the Messiah meant riches for the world but when they finally receive Him - Look Up! Because that brings the Resurrection of the dead! That brings Christ’s return! These are exciting times that we live in. There is a massive revival taking place worldwide. Pastor shares exciting stats showing a booming revival! When we look at God’s fingerprints on the pages of history, when we look at the way the prophetic word has been fulfilled in such remarkable ways - it’s difficult to think this is all coincidence. What it is is the fulfillment of everything God has said. And this fulfillment of His words is not just an argument for His existence - this is His plea for us to take Him seriously! And to return to Him as Lord and Savior of our lives. Watch the video from our website https://www.awakeusnow.com/tuesday-bible-class Now What? Jesus warns his followers against the spirit of judgmentalism - the eagerness to condemn the sins and faults of others while excusing or even denying our own. His followers are to discern truth and falsehood, right and wrong, with humility, repentance, and honesty.
Chronic worry not only disorders the mind but can actually damage physical health. Treatments like massage, breathing exercises, and medicine can relieve the immediate symptoms - but Jesus provides another answer for worry; one that gets directly to the heart and soul of the sufferer.

Scripture: Acts 2:14-21, Joel 2:28-32, Acts 2:38, Luke 11:13, Acts 2:17. Have you repented? And have you been baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and believe on Him? Then the gift of the Holy Spirit is already yours (Acts 2:38). But... have you opened that gift? Pastor will examine what the Scriptures have to say about the Holy Spirit and what that means for our lives today. Our text is Peter’s speech to the crowd on the day of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit found in Acts 2. Peter shares that what has happened to a group of believers is that they had received the power of the Holy Spirit. This giving of the Holy Spirit came after Jesus ascension and was told in the book of Joel. Peter recounts those words: Acts 2:17 “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.” We are living in “The Age of the Last Days.” Those days are from the coming of the Messiah until His final return. These are the days of God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit, being poured out. This is “the age of the Spirit” the Spirit is poured out on all flesh. What does the Holy Spirit Do? He gives the power to Live for God Live a meaningful and significant life in a world that is decaying around us Live confidently What does the Spirit’s power look like? Teaches us Convicts us of sin and our need for a Savior and to turn our lives around Dwells with the people of God, our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit Reveals the things of God Guides us, leads and directs us Gives us gifts Intercedes and prays for us Sanctifies, transforms and renews us, changes our minds, attitudes and behavior to resemble the mind, attitude and behavior of Christ. Why is it that many Christian circles ignore the Holy Spirit? God instructs us to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit, to follow Him, listen to Him and to be guided by Him. What is it that has prevented so many of God’s people from doing that? THE ANSWER: F E A R What will happen if we start talking about the Holy Spirit What will take place if we begin to explore what the scriptures say about the Holy Spirit How will people respond What will be the result Fear sets in the idea it might cause division F E A R does not produce good theology! F E A R leads to a crippled theology that ignores the reality of the Holy Spirit. It speaks about the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, but so often stops there. BUT THE BIBLE DOES NOT! This is a new age - the age of the Spirit - and so we must act on it by faith. Fear keeps us from going where God wants us to go. IS FEAR KEEPING YOU FROM THE HOLY SPIRIT? The Bible declares we do not need to fear having the Holy Spirit, BECAUSE WE ALREADY HAVE IT! ACTS 2:38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” When we repent, received Jesus as our Savior and are baptized we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. So the question is: HAVE YOU OPENED THAT GIFT? A good gift needs to be opened! God is saying “Open the gift and just watch what I will do!” We are not to have half-hearted faith but rather whole-hearted commitment to God who has given us His Spirit! What are you waiting for? We explore Truth #7: “The Old Testament Points to Jesus,” focusing on Luke 24:45 to see how everything written about a Savior in the Old Testament books of The Law, The Prophets and The Writings pointed to Jesus and was fulfilled by Jesus. He is returning, and He will rule forever!
Up To Jerusalem - Teaching 11 Scripture Luke 22:31-34, John 13:31-37, 1 Corinthians 11:23-25, John 14:1-31, Hebrews 7:25 Up to Jerusalem is a story filled with tragedy and yet a story that is above all, a story of victory and hope and defeat of the devil! Pastor’s teaching on Jesus’ Last Supper continues with a look at 1 Corinthians 11:23-25 which documents the changes Jesus instituted in the Passover meal. As He breaks the 3rd piece of matzah Jesus says, “This is My body given for you.” He’s making it clear that what they have been celebrating for centuries is being fulfilled at that very moment. The fulfillment of the meal that had been celebrated for centuries - was changed because Jesus is the fulfillment - He is the Messiah. Then He takes the cup and says, “This is the New Covenant of My blood, poured out for you.” This is the promised new covenant! There are three primary beliefs regarding the Lord’s Supper: 1. Transubstantiation - bread and wine change into the body and blood of Christ 2. Real Presence - in a supernatural way Jesus is present in the bread and wine 3. Symbolic Presence - bread and wine are a symbol of Jesus’ body and blood Doctrine is critical and important, but Jesus makes it very clear on this night that what matters above all else is that we live out the truth of the New Covenant. That truth of the New Covenant is lived out by walking in the footsteps of our Savior’s self sacrifice, in absolute love, and love for our enemies not just our friends and followers of Jesus. Though we may differ in how to interpret the Lord’s Supper and what is received - what needs to bind us together is our common allegiance to the Lord Jesus Christ, and our desire to carry out His will and His purpose. His will and purpose is that we be one in Him - one in Him to win the world back to Him. As we look at what Jesus will suffer this night, we see that He endured so much for us but His suffering resulted in His glorification and this gives our struggles, sufferings and persecutions purpose. We know that because Jesus loves us so much He was willing to endure the cross that ended in victory over the grave - we know He has the power to take our suffering and turn it around for final victory for us as well. We too will triumph! As the meal continues Jesus gives them a new command, “Love one another as I love you.” The depth of God’s love is revealed in the gift of Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross - this is love - and we are to love to that depth. Then Jesus tells Peter He is praying for him - and we know Jesus prays for us too. It says in Hebrews 7:25 “He (Jesus) always lives to intercede (pray) for them (those who come to God through Him).” We also know the Holy Spirit prays for us too. Romans 8:26-27 “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.” What incredible comfort that is - full of strength and encouragement - to know we have the best prayer partners in the universe! As the story continues Jesus tells Peter he will deny Him three times. Pastor shares some interesting information around the meaning of “rooster crows.” Our time together ends with Thomas asking, “How do we know the way to God?” The answer for every person on the planet is found in Jesus’ answer, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Under the blood of Jesus we have EVERYTHING!! Pastor Dodge concludes with encouragement to read John chapters 14-17 as these are the important words of Jesus the evening of His arrest and in these words He shows us what should mean the most to us: love, the Holy Spirit, prayer, trusting God and bearing fruit for Jesus. Jesus encourages us with these words, “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” All of His words are for us still today! The question we need to ask ourselves is: "What do I value most? Am I going to value things that don't last, or am I going to value what God values most - those qualities that endure forever?"
Our God is a deliverer, and He offers us deliverance even - and especially - today!
Why did Jesus teach us to pray. “Lead us not into temptation”? God does not tempt, but He is the One who gives us the strength to face testing/temptation and provides a way of escape from the lure of evil.

Scriptures: Acts 17:24-27, John 1:4, John 6:4, 1 Timothy 4:8, Ecclesiastes 3:11. This is a series that takes a look at things that are readily obvious, but whose significance is frequently missed. We’ll look at Fingerprints of God that are truly all over the world today and all over our lives and yet so often in the busyness of the moment we miss those amazing reminders of God’s goodness, of His presence, of his faithfulness and of His great gift of Jesus Christ for each of us. God IS speaking in amazing ways in our generation and in our time! Pastor talks about the miracle of life and the odds that science has placed on life happening, they say it requires at least 150 unique things to make life possible. The research calculates the chance of that “accidentally” happening to be 1 chance to the 50th power - that’s a 1 with 50 zeroes behind it… or impossible…. How life happened cannot be explained, but there is a 1 word, three letter answer - IT’S G-O-D! LIFE IS A MIRACLE! Our culture sees life as just happening, but with a 1 to the 50th power chance that’s saying it’s impossible. Life didn’t just happen, life is created and God is The Creator! Living things like singing birds, our pets, the sky, truly are fingerprints of God. Acts 17:24-27 tells us, “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth … He himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.” Fingerprints of God ⁃ Life - everything living ⁃ Us inhaling and exhaling at this moment! ⁃ Raising Jesus from the dead ⁃ Creation ⁃ Salvation John 1:4 tells us, “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.” Jesus didn’t come to this world to make bad people good, Jesus Christ came to this world to make dead people live. We are spiritually dead and in the Lord Jesus Christ, God offers real life to each of us - it’s life that lasts forever! John 6:40 says, “For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” Life itself is a fingerprint of God and we were created to live forever and that forever life is found in Jesus. There is a present life and there is the life to come. In that life to come we will live forever even through we experience physical death. God has left His fingerprint on our hearts and He tells us He has put eternity in our hearts. Ecclesiastes 3:11: “ He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” The way we spend our forever life hinges on ONE thing and that is how we receive the gift that God offers. JESUS IS THAT GIFT. God offers life through His Son and that’s a gift and promise we want to accept through faith in the perfect One, Jesus, who’s fingerprints were nailed to the cross, who conquered sin, death and the devil when He rose from the grave, the One who promised to return! LIFE is in Jesus and Life is the FINGERPRINT OF GOD AND HIS LOVE. Watch the video from our website https://www.awakeusnow.com/tuesday-bible-class Now What? "Forgive us our debts/sins as we forgive others" is not a prayer to be spoken lightly, but a prayer to be lived. Even the most devout believer has a daily need to reconnect with God through repentance and forgiveness.
"Give us ... our daily bread" is not a "mundane" prayer request. Jesus is calling us to look to God, to trust Him with our entire lives, and to call on Him to meet all our physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.
Scripture: Luke 24:1-11, Mark 15:42-45, Psalm 22, Isaiah 53. Doubts about Jesus’ resurrection? Are you a skeptic? Is it nonsense that can’t be true or if you know a skeptic or one who doubts the resurrection story, everyone is invited to come along with us today as we take a look at the skeptics and doubters in the Bible and explore if they remained skeptics and unbelievers! Pastor explores several examples of doubters regarding Jesus’ resurrection in the New Testament. He shares a list of individuals who did not believe in the resurrection at first. Then Pastor explores Alternative Explanations that have been suggested for what took place that morning: ⁃ Multiple conspiracies ⁃ Women went to the wrong tomb ⁃ “Christ myth” ⁃ Disciples lied But all these alternative explanations fall by the wayside when carefully examined which leads us to the: Evidences ⁃ Empty tomb ⁃ Eyewitnesses ⁃ Prophecies ⁃ Bold martyrs The heart of the story of the resurrection of Jesus is the: Good News ⁃ Consequences of sin = death ⁃ Death is not the end ⁃ God’s gift is Christ ⁃ Saving Faith - in the One who has risen from the grave, is alive and will return Being “good” doesn’t save us Trying hard doesn’t save us It’s not that we’re better than others IT’S PURELY A GIFT FROM GOD! Pastor shares a call to come to Jesus as your Savior. He leads us through a prayer of recommitment to Christ for believers and a prayer of commitment to Christ for first time believers. Up To Jerusalem - Teaching 10 Scripture Luke 22, Exodus 6:6-7, John 13 & 14, Psalm 113, 114, 115, 116, 117, 118 Jesus’ Last Supper - Pastor opens with an interesting piece of history. Based on writings from Rabbis during the time of Jesus - the Passover lambs were actually “crucified.” What we know from Rabbinic writings is that when the priests killed the Lambs at the Temple in preparation for the Passover meal - they then took a thin stave and ran it through the shoulders of the killed lamb and then another stave was driven through its mouth and down its spine forming a cross, making it ready for roasting. As our story opens - Jesus and His disciples gather in the upper room that Peter and John have prepared. Passover - how it may have been in Jesus’ Day - Passover Table - banquet style meal, low table surrounded by couches or pillows for reclining on, head supported by left hand, ate with right hand, was a lengthy meal that started at sunset. - Four Cups Kiddish Cup (to set apart - Sanctify) Plagues Cup (story of the Passover was shared followed by singing of Psalms 113 and 114) Blessing Cup (during the meal followed by singing of Psalms 115-118) Hallel Cup (Praise cup with singing of Psalm 126. Also referred to as Elijah’s cup) Jesus shares that He will not have this meal again until the meal finds its fulfillment in the kingdom of God (following His return). There’s a possibility that Jesus ended the meal early. But here’s a possible order of the sequence of the events of the meal - the seating - bickering about who sits where - Jesus washing the disciples feet - Jesus tells that one of them will betray Him - Judas leaves There is uncertainty around when the meal was actually eaten. Was Judas there or not. Based on text from Luke and John it appears Judas was present for the meal. Pastor shares that Jesus is still merciful to Judas - to the very last He is trying to help Judas see what he is doing. When considering Judas’ worthiness to be at the meal, the question becomes were any worthy of participating in this meal? The meal was attended by traitors and cowards. It is a table not of merit but of GRACE. Our God is a merciful and gracious God. His own disciples would run away that very night and leave Him in the garden - abandoning Him in His hour of need and yet Jesus still loved them. He knew what was going to happen and He still gave His disciples this meal as an indication of His incredible love. This meal - the Lord’s Supper - is something we have turned into law rather than grace. None of us can stand before a Holy God and say, “Look how good I am.” The moment we do that we walk away from the Gospel of Grace. We come to God as sinners, covered by the blood of His Son, made new by Him and when we receive the meal - the very meal He has with His disciples, we are being reassured of His incredible love, a love not based on our merit, accomplishments or achievements, but a love that is based upon the incredible love of The Father for those He has made and those He has redeemed with the blood of His Son. It is NOT a table of merit. IT IS A TABLE OF GRACE. Our natural self tells us to pray, "MY will be done." But Jesus says we are to invite God to conquer us, to take charge of our lives and change our hearts so that we willingly pray, "YOUR will be done."
A

"Thy kingdom come" is both a missionary and a visionary prayer. We know that in these last days God is at work in human history to establish His kingdom over all the earth, and that the day will come when the Lord Jesus returns to make all things new.

Awake Us Now

This teaching is from Matthew 28:1-20, 1 Corinthians 15:20-23, 1 Corinthians 15:6 Today we finish up the Gospel of Matthew. Pastor helps us see the Old Testament Feasts through New Testament eyes showing us some interesting insights. The resurrection of Jesus took place on the 1st day of the week, Sunday, which is the first day after the Jewish Sabbath on Saturday. Jesus’ resurrection also happened on the day called The Day of First Fruits which is celebrated on the first day after the Sabbath as part of their week-long Feast of Unleavened Bread. The Day of First Fruits a day to celebrate the harvest and to give back a part of the harvest to God as an offering. Israel has two harvest times. One in the spring - this is the springtime harvest - but there is also a second harvest in the fall. (The second harvest will be at Jesus return.) It is no coincidence that Jesus was raised from death on the day of First Fruits. God had a plan from the beginning and Jesus is the fulfillment of that plan, He is the First Fruits of the resurrection. 1 Corinthians 15:20-23 says, “But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him.” Our story picks up with another earthquake, the guards being frightened and running off as an angel comes down from heaven to the tomb of Jesus and talks to the women that are there. The tomb is open and Jesus is not there and the angels tells them Jesus is risen. The story goes on with the women being the first to meet Jesus and worship Him. The runaway guards go to the chief priests to tell them all that’s happened. So the chief priests and elders gather to devise a plan, paying off the guards, they tell them to say that Jesus’ disciples stole Jesus’ body. Verse 15 ends with “And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.” There is no record of anyone suggesting the tomb was still occupied, everyone knew the tomb was empty - the only story the priests could come up with was that the disciples stole the body. Yet the truth is - Christ rose!! Victorious over the death and the grave. Our story goes on with the disciples going to a mountain in area of Galilee to see Jesus where they worshiped Him. He tells them that all authority of heaven and earth has been given to Him. Jesus is the Lord of the Universe! Jesus is the image of the invisible God, He’s the One through whom everything was created. Jesus saying he has all authority is the first part of the Great Commission and explains why He can give the command of the great commission. The Great Commission tells all disciples then and now to make more disciples, not believers, but disciples, meaning those who believe AND follow Christ. We are told to baptize them in THE NAME of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. “The Name” why not “names” - Father, Son and Holy Spirit are three names. Jesus specifically says, “Name” no “s” - not plural. Because they are ONE. Jesus goes on telling us to teach everything He’s commanded us. Ending with the assuring promise that He is always with us. Scripture: Luke 24:45-47, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, Matthew 12, Hosea 6:1-2, Genesis 22:4, Esther 5:1, Jonah 1:17, Exodus 19:10, 2 Kings 20:5, Genesis 1:9-13. As we read through the Old Testament we see time and again, God doing amazing things on “the third day.” It is something that stands out! Today we explore eight remarkable examples in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) that speak of God delivering His people on the 3rd day: 1. Hosea 6:1-2 “Come, let us return to the Lord. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds. After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence.” The third day is associated with restoration, the return to life, God’s mighty work. 2. Genesis 22:4 “On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.” This day was the day that Abraham saw the place in the distance that he was to sacrifice his son, but it was also the day Abraham saw the mighty deliverance of God as God Himself provided a lamb for the sacrifice in place of Isaac. 3. Jonah 1:17 “Now the Lord provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.” This was a picture of what Jesus Himself would endure and do. Jesus in Matthew 12 speaks of Jonah as a picture of Himself. 4. Exodus 19:10-11 “And the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes and be ready by the third day, because on that day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.” This is from the story of deliverance of the children of Israel from bondage in Egypt and they come to Mt. Sinai and God says He will appear to them on the third day. 5. Esther 5:1 “On the third day Esther put on her royal robes and stood in the inner court of the palace, in front of the king’s hall. The king was sitting on his royal throne in the hall, facing the entrance.” After 3 days of fasting and praying, Esther went before King Xerxes and deliverance was given to the Jewish people. 6. Joshua 1:11 “Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘Get your provisions ready. On the third day you will cross the Jordan here to go in and take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own.’” The children of Israel, after wandering for 40 years in the wilderness, finally come to the Promised Land and the Lord tells Joshua to tell the people that on the third day they would cross the Jordan to the land He had promised them. 7. 2 Kings 20:5 “Go back and tell Hezekiah, the ruler of my people, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the temple of the Lord.” Hezekiah is told by Isaiah that he would die soon. Hezekiah cries out to God to prolong his life and then Isaiah is given a message from God that on the third day Hezekiah would be able to go to the temple to worship God and that he would be given 15 more years to live. 8. Genesis 1:9-13 “And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.” The first day of the week is Sunday, the 2nd day is Monday, the 3rd is Tuesday. It’s on this third day that God saw what He had made and spoke the words, “it is good,” for the first time and said it not once but twice that day. And this is why the Jewish people have said the third is a special day. And that’s why even today many orthodox Jewish weddings are on Tuesdays, because it’s the third day of the week and the third day is special. These “third days” are not accidents, they are indications of the purpose and plan of God and they are fulfilled in the Lord Jesus who rose on the third day. The crucifixion of Jesus is the goriest, most disgusting event in history, but it is also the means of our deliverance. God was willing to endure it all for us! And He can be trusted because on the third day he rose! And according to the scriptures He’s coming back! Awake Us Now

This teaching is from Matthew 27:49-28:4 We pick up the story from last week on the evening of Passover. Jesus is on the cross, it’s three in the afternoon. Jesus cries out, “it is finished” and dies just as the sacrifice is being offered in the Temple. At that very moment the curtain in the Temple is torn from top to bottom. That curtain separated the Holy Place of the Sanctuary from the Holy of Holies in the rear of the Sanctuary. The curtain was a massive curtain approximately 60’ by 30’ and about 8 inches thick. Symbolically - this is a sign that everything has changed. The entry way to the Holy of Holies which had been only for a chief priest to enter once a year for atonement was now wide open - a physical representation that the way to the Heavenly Father is now opened for all. No longer through multiple sacrifices, it is now through the blood of the Son of the Living God. That entry gives us direct access to the Father through the Son. There was darkness from 12-3pm and when Christ died, there was a massive earth quake and a Centurian exclaimed, “Surely, this was the Son of God!” Jesus’ burial - Joseph of Arimathea went to Pilot to ask for Jesus’ body and it was given to him. God’s command in Deuteronomy 21:22-23 says, “If someone guilty of a capital offense is put to death and their body is exposed on a pole, you must not leave the body hanging on the pole overnight. Be sure to bury it that same day, because anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse. You must not desecrate the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.” The Jewish people followed this command from God and so Joseph of Arimathea took Jesus’ body down from the cross at His death and didn’t allow it to stay on the “pole.” Joseph wrapped the body in cloth and placed Jesus in the tomb that he had recently purchased for himself. Pastor shares archeological and historical evidence of the site of Jesus’ burial site under the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. After Jesus is placed in the tomb the chief priests and pharisees - who do not normally agree with each other - went together to Pilate to remind him that Jesus had said, “After three days I will rise again.” So Pilate tells them to secure the tomb so that Jesus’ disciples could not come steal the body and claim Jesus had risen from the dead. The tomb was secured by sealing it with wax around the stone at the opening of the tomb and a guard was posted. We move into Matthew chapter 28 where we read the story of Jesus resurrection. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary go to the tomb early the next morning when again there is another violent earthquake at the time of Jesus’ resurrection. An angel comes down from heaven, rolls the stone of the tomb away from the opening and sits on it, frightening the guard. All the plans of man to do away with Jesus have come to an end. And now God is intervening in a remarkable and powerful and awesome way. Join us next week for the rest of Jesus’ amazing resurrection story that is also ours! Awake Us Now

This teaching is from Matthew 27:26-49, Psalm 22:1, 7-8 Today’s story is the crucifixion of Jesus. We pick up our story with the flogging of Jesus. Pastor describes what Jesus experienced in this brutal method of torture. Jesus was then brought to the preaetorium in front of all the soldiers where He was mocked and beaten before they lead Him away to be crucified. Simon from Cyrene was forced to carry Jesus’ cross as they walked to Golgatha because Jesus was too weak from the brutality He experienced. Once on the cross they offered Him wine mixed with gall, but Jesus refused to drink it. What was this drink? Evidence that has survived points to a tradition that the women of Jerusalem prepared a wine mixture that was intended to dull the pain of an individual who was being tortured or crucified. But we see Jesus refusing to drink it. The Son of God chose to endure the pain without having anything to easy it. He chose to willingly suffer the agonies of the damned for each of us. Then they cast lots for His clothes and place a sign with the charge against Him: “This is Jesus, King of the Jews.” Pastor shares a detailed description of Jesus’ cross. The story continues with taunting coming from the gathered crowd and as darkness covers the sky from noon to 3pm. Jesus cries out to God the Father highlighting David’s prophetic words from Psalm 22:1. Note also the prophetic fulfillment of the words of verses 7-8: All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads. “He trusts in the Lord,” they say, “let the Lord rescue him.Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.” 7 Words of Jesus from the Cross ⁃ Father forgive them they know not what they do ⁃ Today you will be with me in paradise ⁃ Woman, behold your son ⁃ My God, my God, why have you forsaken me ⁃ I thirst ⁃ It is finished ⁃ Father into Thy hands I commend my spirit Jesus’ crucifixion is the greatest love story the world has ever heard. The Only Son of God willingly saved us and it ought to drive us to our knees in tears and holy awe. Scripture: Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-44, John 12:12-19, Romans 11:25-26, Exodus 12:3. The Palm Sunday story is a familiar story with detail that is not well known. This event was a prophetic declaration not only to the first century but also to the twenty-first century! Palm Sunday - Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem on a donkey to the shouts of “Hosanna” the weekend before his crucifixion death and resurrection. All four Gospels record this event - each one offers a unique perspective. Pastor puts the four author’s writings together in a way that shows a host of detail about what it meant then and what it means now. Pastor Dodge takes a deeper look into the following topics, sharing the New Testament coverage of the event with the prophetic words of this very event from the Old Testament in Zechariah, Psalms, Exodus, Deuteronomy and others. We will see this event as fulfillment of what had been biblically predicted: Setting Timing Donkey Hosanna Opposition Weeping Return Jesus shares prophetically in these words: “For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’” And we read this in Romans 11:25 “I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in, and in this way all Israel will be saved.” The day is coming when the Jewish people will receive Jesus as their Messiah. We can see this now: 23 - in 1948 the nation of Israel was established in a single day, a nation that had not existed for almost 19 full centuries. In 1948 there were 23 Jewish believers in the Messiah. 2000- and in 1948 there were 2000 Jewish believers in the whole world 30,000 - today there are 30,000 Jewish believers in Messiah in Israel 1,000,000 - and Jewish believers around the world and growing. Something dramatic has happened - the Jewish people are coming to recognize Jesus as their Messiah and Savior. It mean the very thing Jesus predicted is taking place in our day and the King is coming back!! This account from the New Testament is an historic account. One that summons us to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, one that calls us to recognize that God is in control, one that helps us understand that the Lord’s desire is that we know Him, that we be filled with His Holy Spirit and that we be part of the great assembly of believers who will ultimately welcome our King - because THE KING IS COMING BACK! Awake Us Now

Up To Jerusalem - Teaching 9 Scripture - Matthew 25-26, Luke 22 We continue with Jesus’ Mt. Olivet Discourse where He is talking about the future end of Jerusalem that did happen in 70AD several decades after His ascension and as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophets. Jesus is also talking of the preparation for His second coming and the importance of being awake. Pastor reviews the conclusion of the Parable of the Ten Virgins with Jesus’ words,”Therefore keep watch because you do not know the day or the hour.” We want to be awakened ⁃ Awake to the things of God ⁃ Awake to what He desires of us ⁃ Awake to our mission to lead others to a knowledge of the Savior and to usher in the Kingdom of God Additional parables covered ⁃ The Parable of the Talents - It is possible to know about the Master without truly knowing Him and living in relationship with Him. We are to use all He has given us to His glory so that others know and learn the Good News of our Savior. We are called to serve, love and honor God. ⁃ The Parable of the Sheep and the Goats - Pastor helps us understand this parable in a first century Jewish context. This story is incredibly profound and Pastor shares a personal testimony around the subject of sheep and goats and the question: “Do goats hear the shepherd’s voice?” Pastor shares the differences between sheep and goats. In Jerusalem these two animals are in the same flock but they are very different. ⁃ Identity: 54 chromosomes vs. 60 chromosomes ⁃ Diet: tender grass vs. garbage ⁃ Intelligence: great ability to learn and understand and created to thrive under a shepherd vs. independent ⁃ Offspring: keep lambs near by vs. send their offspring out on their own ⁃ Social structures: no competition, need a shepherd to lead them vs. butt heads, desire to dominate ⁃ Shepherd: only thrive under a good shepherd vs. fiercely independent This parable shows us that it is possible to be a member of the flock but not be one of The Shepherd’s sheep. Jesus is the Good Shepherd and it’s important to follow Him. This parable goes on to talk about when “The King” comes and how He will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. Sheep on His right to eternal life and goats on the left to eternal punishment. This parable is about being a new creation in Christ, a follower, one of His sheep that hears His voice. Goats have not become new in Christ and want be in control. We are NOT saved by works - we are saved by the Good Shepherd who laid down His life for His sheep. As we continue, we move into Matthew 26 where Jesus tells His disciples, again, of His impending crucifixion. We see Judas going to the chief priests as he prepares to betray Jesus as told in both Matthew 26 and Luke 22. From there we see Jesus send two of His disciples (Peter and John) to begin preparations for the Passover meal which includes finding a place for their meal together and also going to the temple for the lamb for the meal. Pastor points out several examples of Jesus being in control of the details leading up to His arrest and that it is not the enemy who is control. Jesus is in charge! He is the Lord! And this is something we each need to realize - we are not in charge of our destinies, we do not make the rules, when we try - then we are like goats. But when we listen to Jesus, the Good Shepherd, we are His precious sheep and He desires to be both Lord and Savior in our lives. Even through Judas is “making plans” Jesus is still in control and He will not allow the enemy to divert Him from the Father’s purpose. Pastor goes on to share unique details about the Passover lambs at the temple and our Passover Lamb, Jesus. Awake Us Now

This teaching is from Matthew Matthew 26:69 - 27:31, Deuteronomy 27:25, Zechariah 11:12.-13, Jeremiah 19:1-13, Isaiah 53:4-8 The story of Jesus’ trial continues with a look into what’s transpiring in the courtyard. We see Peter being accused of knowing Jesus 3 different times and all three times Peter denies knowing Jesus. But then the rooster crows and he remembers Jesus’ words predicting his denial. Peter leaves the courtyard in tears. Meanwhile, Judas is experiencing remorse as he sees that Jesus is condemned. Judas returns the 30 pieces of silver realizing he has betrayed innocent blood and goes out to the hang himself. The story moves into the Roman part of the trial. Note: it is not just the Jewish leadership sentencing Jesus, it is the Gentiles as well. Showing us that It is all of us who have put Jesus on the cross. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23. Isaiah 53:4-6 “Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities;the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way;and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” Jesus is brought before Pontius Pilot and asked, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Throughout the testimonies against Him, Jesus remains quiet. Jesus’ silence is a fulfillment of the prophetic verses found in Isaiah 53:7-8 “He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth;he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. By oppression and judgment he was taken away. Yet who of his generation protested? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was punished.” Pilot could see that the charges against Jesus are drummed up - and while proceedings are going on Pilot’s wife sends him a message, “Don’t have anything o do with the innocent man for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of Him.” Pilot had the option to release one prisoner - asking the crowd who they would like released - Jesus or Barabus - the crowd chooses to release Barabus and they cheer for Jesus to be crucified. Pilot then washes His hands saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. It is your responsibility.” And then Pilot has Jesus flogged and handed over to be crucified. Awake Us Now

This teaching is from Matthew 26:39-68 Come along as we see: Who Jesus is and why we so desperately need Him As we look at Jesus’ story of His arrest and trial, we will learn that Jesus is faithful and we are not, Jesus is fearless and we are not, Jesus is forthright and we are not. Today’s story opens in the Garden of Gethsemane with Jesus having asked His disciples to stay awake while He goes to pray and share His heart with the Father. Jesus knows what is coming and asks the Father if there is another way - yet ends the prayer saying, “not my will, Father, but Yours.” Jesus remains faithful to accomplish the will of the Father. As Jesus returns the 3rd time from praying to the Father He again discovers the disciples sleeping. He wakes them as the scene changes… we read next the betrayal by Judas as he point out Jesus in the crowd by kissing/greeting Him. Jesus is seized and arrested, yet He fearlessly goes with them, faithful to the will of God the Father. Peter then cuts off the ear of one of the servants that was present and Jesus immediately heals the ear, telling Peter not to give into hatred. Jesus doesn’t resist arrest and willingly steps into fulfilling the Scriptures. The prophetic words spoken in the Old Testament about Jesus are fulfilled and it is in seeing this fulfillment of His first coming, that we know what the Bible tells us of His second coming is truth, as well. Jesus will fulfill, one day soon, everything predicted in His return. There is so much more to come and we don’t want to miss it! What He offers is life forever with Him! Faith in Him delivers and saves us! As Jesus is taken away His disciples abandon Him, leaving Him alone and deserted. He is brought before the High Priest, Caiaphas. Peter hangs back in the courtyard area. (A spot that comes into play in next week’s study!) The Sanhedrin begin looking for evidence against Jesus. Two witnesses declare that Jesus said “I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in 3 days.” These were words spoken during the story of Jesus cleansing the Temple. Pastor shares some interesting insight into there being 2 times Jesus cleansed the temple and not just once. One at the beginning of His ministry and then again just days before His arrest. The temple cleansings bookend His ministry. The High Priest asks Jesus to answer the change of destroying the temple and building it up in three days, but Jesus does not answer. Again displaying His fearlessness. He remains quiet. Caiaphus seeing he doesn’t have enough evidence to convict Jesus, then demands that Jesus tells them, under oath of the Living God, if He is the Messiah the Son of God. Meaning: Are you making a claim to divinity (and this was a crime). And Jesus answers, “You have said so.” And goes on saying, “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” (Matthew 26:64) Jesus’ forthrightness in His answer describes who He Is by quoting Old Testament Scriptures (Daniel 7:13 and Psalm 110:1). In His answer, Jesus is claiming Deity and thus convicts Himself. At Jesus’ words the High Priest tears His clothes (something that was only permitted when someone was blasphemous). Verses 65-66 continue, “Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, ‘He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” The crowd answered, “He is worthy of death.” Our study ends with Jesus’ faithfulness and fearlessness as seen in verses 67-68: “Then they spit in Jesus’ face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?” When we meet next the story of Jesus’ arrest and conviction continue with more for us to learn on who Jesus is! Join us! Awake Us Now

This teaching is from Matthew 26:26-39 and Exodus 6:6-7 Our story continues today with the Lord’s Supper. Jesus is going to make it clear that He is the Passover Lamb who lays down His life for all people of all time. Pastor overviews the Passover meal: why it was done, what the purpose was and shows us how Jesus changed the script that had always been spoken during this meal since the time of Moses. Taking the bread Jesus says, “Take eat; this is My body.” Then after that He took the cup saying, “Drink from it, all of you, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” Pastor shares about the 4 cups of wine during the Passover meal referencing the four verbs in Exodus 6:6-7. Four verbs, four cups of wine: 1. Cup 1 - I will BRING you out 2. Cup 2 - I will FREE you 3. Cup 3 - I will REDEEM you 4. Cup 4 - I will take you as My people According to what is said in the gospels it appears Jesus spoke the words “drink this cup…” with the 3td cup - the Cup of Redemption. Jesus talks about this cup as “my blood of covenant given for you and for many.” This cup not only reminds us of God’s great deliverance of His people from bondage in Egypt, but it is God’s new covenant of deliverance from the bondage of sin for all people. The disciples could see something unique was happening. Clearly Jesus is speaking of Himself as the redemption. In the days to come the disciples would look back on this Supper, Jesus’ Last Supper, and they would see it more clearly. In the next verse, as Jesus finishes this 3rd cup, taking what is written here in Matthew 26:29 and in the other gospels it appears Jesus is saying He will not drink the 4th cup until the day we are all together in His Father’s kingdom (meaning when everything is fulfilled) when he said, “ I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” Jesus will take this fourth cup, the Cup that will be celebrated at the “Marriage Feast of the Lamb” on His return. “When I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom,” this is the assurance of His return and a celebration that will never end. Then Jesus and His disciples head to the Mount of Olives to the Garden of Gethsemane. He tells them that He is overwhelmed to the point of death. Jesus is truly God in human flesh - a real human being going through agony and sorrow at what He knows is to come. He asks the disciples to stay with him and keep watch or in other words, “Be Awake!” What does it mean to “be awake?” It means to recognize the times, to be ready and prepared, to be one with our Lord Jesus, one with our Heavenly Father and one with the Holy Spirit. Be Awake! Jesus asks that “this cup to be taken from me, yet not as I will but as you will.” Jesus - fully divine but also fully human speaks to His father and says could we go with another plan? But concludes His request with not my will but your will. This is how we too should pray - praying in God’s will. We know things that God desires and we can pray in His will without hesitation: For awakening in our country For people to come back to the Lord For people to know the Lord For those going through difficult days And holding one another up in prayer But there are some times when we don’t know what God desires because His ways are far beyond our ways and even Jesus prayed not my will but your will to the Father. “Thy will be done,” even in the face of overwhelming agony of what was ahead He stilled prayed “Your will, Father” and we are called to pray the same way. Scripture: John 20:1-18, Exodus 25:10-22, Leviticus 16, Jeremiah 3:16, Jeremiah 31:31-34, Romans 3:23 God provides remarkable glimpses of Jesus in the Old Testament. To understand what Mary Magdalene saw in the empty tomb that first Resurrection Sunday, consider the Arc of the Covenant and the part it had in the Day of Atonement. Today’s study is the eyewitness story of Mary Magdalene going to Jesus’ tomb and finding it empty. As she approaches the tomb she sees the stone has been removed from the tomb’s opening. She runs and tells two of Jesus’ disciples what she’s seen and they run to the tomb and see that what she said, was true. They leave not understanding what has happened. Mary is left alone at the tomb. Crying, she peers into the tomb and sees two angels in white seated where Jesus’ body had been - one at the head and one at the foot. In Exodus 25:10-22 we read about God’s instruction for building the Arc of the Covenant. The directions tell us about the lid - atonement cover - of the box and that it was to be covered in gold and have 2 cherubs (angels) at each end of the cover, God then tells Moses to put the tablets which He will give him into the box, put the cover on the box. God then tells Him that there, between the cherubim on the Mercy Seat / Atonement Cover of the box / Arc of the Covenant., He will meet with Moses. God instructed that once a year at Yom Kippur - the High Priest were to kill a goat as a sacrifice for the people’s sin and sprinkle its blood on the Atonement Cover - on the Mercy Seat. Then after sprinkling the cover they would release another goat into the wilderness. This Day of Atonement served as a reminder that they needed an innocent victim not only to cover and pay for their sins but also to carry those sins away. In Jeremiah 31 we read that God will give a new covenant and the New Covenant is what Mary got a glimpse of that resurrection morning because she saw the flat place where the bloodied body of our Savior had been laid - after He offered Himself as a sacrifice for our sin. And now the body is gone and there on the spot where Jesus had laid are two angels, one on each end of it - It is a picture of the Arc’s Atonement Cover, the Mercy Seat! God is offering the New Covenant! The story continues with Mary coming face to face with the risen Jesus. He calls her by name and she immediately recognizes Him. It’s not knowing the stories about Jesus, it’s about coming face to face with the reality of who He is. Like Mary - it’s personal - it’s about relationship with Him. What Mary saw is the most amazing foreshadowing: How the place where God met with the children of Israel had been fulfilled in the place where God meets all of us in the empty tomb - because He is alive! And that changes everything! Jesus is the One who is the very Mercy Seat of God, who’s blood covers our sin, who carried it away and who offers us life and forgiveness and hope and joy and an eternity with Him. Awake Us Now

This teaching is from Matthew 26:1-28. As we come to these final chapters of Matthew we are exploring the final days of Jesus’ ministry on earth; His time with the disciples, His suffering, His death, His resurrection. These are days that truly have changed the world and that’s not hyperbole - it’s fact. In today’s reading - Jesus tells the disciples yet again of His coming crucifixion. He continues to let them know what’s coming and what’s ahead so that when it happens they will remember He had told them these things and they can then begin to put the pieces together. In verses 3-5 we read of the chief priests and elders scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill Him. But they decide to wait until after the Passover festival is over to avoid rioting by the crowds that are in Jerusalem during the festival time frame. BUT something happens to change their minds from that decision to a decision of “let’s do it now!” It is no coincidence the timing of what’s coming for Jesus in the timing of the Passover Festival. The day before Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem - what we call Palm Sunday - Jesus is at a dinner at Simon the Leper’s home. While Jesus is dining, Mary pours perfume on Jesus’ head. When the disciples call it a waste of money that could have gone to the poor, Jesus says, “When she poured this perfume on my head and body, she did it to prepare me for burial.” Yet another way of letting the disciples know what’s to come. Next we read about the reason the Chief Priests change their minds to arresting Jesus earlier than originally planned. Judas, one of the disciples, comes to them and asks what they would give him for delivering Jesus one to them. He was given 30 pieces of silver and then began to watch for the opportune time to hand Jesus to them. As the day for the Passover meal approaches, the disciples ask Jesus where He wants to make preparations to eat the meal. They gather around the table of an upper room for the Passover meal at the place the disciples had secured according to Jesus’ directions. During the meal, Jesus mentions more clues of what is to come, “My appointed time is near.” During the dinner Jesus announces, “Truly, I tell you, one of you will betray Me” and gives a harsh word of judgement. As the Passover meal continues, Jesus institutes the “Lord’s Supper” as a New Covenant. He takes the bread and wine of the Passover meal and reveals Himself as the Passover Lamb, the body (bread) and blood (wine) of the Passover Lamb meal. There are multiple correlations between the Passover Festival activities and activities of Jesus during His last week on earth. Jesus is the perfect, unblemished Lamb of God. Awake Us Now

This teaching is from Matthew 25:31-46 with a review of Matthew 24:3, 30-31 with 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 Pastor Dodge opens on the topic of the “Rapture?” Yes, he adds the “?” as his purpose is to plant in our minds' questions that need to be addressed around the topic of the rapture. The word rapture is not used in the New Testament, but Pastor takes a look at the teaching in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 in the light of Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 24:3, 30-31. Many believers hold to a quiet, unannounced, silent rapture that’s only noticed after people have disappeared and that happens before the tribulation. The Rapture is a young teaching going back to the 1830s by John Darby who brought forth the teaching of the a Pre-Tribulational Rapture. Pastor believes in a rapture - but does not believe it will be silent or unseen, nor does he believe it will take place before Jesus’ final appearing. Why? He bases his view on scripture and draws a comparison between the two sets of verses using some of the original Greek words to impart additional insight that shows both are talking about the same day - the final coming of Christ. - Not a quiet or unobserved coming but rather something all will see and hear. (Take a listen to the teaching for further insight by going to the link below.) Pastor then moves on with our progression through the book of Matthew by exploring Matthew 25:31-46 - the Parable of the Sheep and Goats. Pastor shares a personal story that taught him the difference between sheep and goats. There are physical differences like sheep graze, eating grass and goats are browsers, eating anything and everything. Sheep tails go down, goat tails go up. But there are other significant differences: Goats butt heads to gain control, they go off on their own and are fiercely independent. Sheep view the shepherd as in control, follow him and thrive under his care and put themselves under the authority of the shepherd. As we dig deep into the differences between sheep and goats it becomes very apparent why Jesus chose the illustration of sheep and goats for this parable on His Return. Now let’s examine the story. The parable tells how when Jesus returns He will separate the goats from the sheep. Goats to His left and sheep to His right. He separates them not by what they have done but ON WHO THEY ARE and whose they are. The sheep belong to Him, the goats do not. After the separation, He talks about what each did or did not do showing the difference between those who have received Him as Savor and Lord (sheep) and those who have not (goats). Followers of the Lamb vs Those who are followers of the devil To those on the right (where the sheep are - the ones who have put themselves under the authority of the Good Shepherd.) Jesus gives them an inheritance, eternal life forever with Him. To the goats on the left (those who did not hear or heed the Shepherd’s voice) He commands them to depart from Him to eternal punishment. Noteworthy: Jesus does NOT say, “I know my goats and my goats know me.” He does Not say, “I lay down my life for my goats.” And He does NOT say, “I am the good goatherd.” Jesus is the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep and who laid down His life for His sheep and we, as His sheep, will follow Him. Awake Us Now

Acts 1:6-11, Psalm 22, Luke 21:28, Matthew 24:6-8, 14 Our story today, the ascension of Jesus on the Mount of Olives, takes place 40 days after His resurrection. Throughout His ministry, Jesus has shared what the end times will be like: Disasters Wars Rumors of wars Earthquakes Famine Pestilence Jesus said that these events are like birth pains - meaning they start slow and they increase in strength and frequency. These show us the end is coming nearer. Pastor shares evidence of the ramp up to the events that lead to Jesus’ return as these signs grow closer and closer together and get more and more severe. Though Jesus had often talked about the end times, the disciples with Him that day of His ascension, ask Him yet again, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” They were anticipating that Israel’s freedom would be restored when Messiah came, that with the resurrection would come all that God had planned. And their anticipation that it must be now that it will happen, after all He’s alive, He triumphed over the grave - so now “are you going to restore the kingdom of Israel?” And Jesus replies, “It is not for you to know the dates the Father has set by His own authority.” Then Jesus goes on and what He says next becomes one of the biggest signs of all regarding the end, that the good news would reach the ends of the earth. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” In Jesus’ words found in Matthew 24:14 He says, “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” Jesus made it clear that we do not know the day of His return but we can look at the signs and the signs are very clear. We are living in remarkable times: disasters, war, persecution increasing, like birth pains, Israel restored (1948), but also the message of Jesus to every nation and peoples across the globe. These are unsettling times, but they are also exciting times. Our scripture story ends with a word from the angels that appeared with the disciples after Jesus went up into the clouds of heavens, “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” Yes! He IS coming back as the song says, “Riding on the clouds!” Jesus tells us “When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” (Luke 21:28) When we see the signs that He laid out being fulfilled, look up, be awake, watch! Because our Redeemer’s return is drawing near! Let’s eagerly anticipate the final appearing of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! No matter what happens, we know our Savior is coming back and that gives us confidence and hope even in uncertain times. God is faithful! Jesus IS alive and He’s coming back! What are we waiting for? The enemy has altered our core beliefs with well-crafted lies, not just influencing us in our homes and communities, but yes, even in our churches. Join us as we explore the lies and open our hearts to being Rescued by Truth. In week 14, Pastor shares the truth of being imperishable and immortal.
Up To Jerusalem - Teaching 8 Scripture - Matthew 24:15 - Matthew 25:13 Luke 21, Mark 13 and Matthew 24-25 all have the story of Jesus’ Mt. Olivet Discourse with His disciples. In today’s opening verses in Matthew 24:15ff, we hear Jesus answering the questions we left off with last week. The two questions the disciples asked Jesus: 1. When will these things you are telling us happen to the temple 2. What will be the sign of your return They are thinking that these two questions coincide one with the other…. As we now know - that was not the case. Jesus is giving a forewarning of what would befall Jerusalem. (The fall happened in the year 70AD when the Roman General Titus laid siege to Jerusalem and ultimately leveled it to the ground.) Jesus’ answer contains responses for both the questions. The Abomination that causes Desolation - three options of what this might be were shared last week - but only one seems to fit the time frame: An event in winter 67/68AD - the temple was profaned by Jewish insurgents. Pastor reads about the event from Josephus’ writing: The Jewish War. During this event the insurgents caused division within the Jewish community. It’s a good possibility that this event caused believers in Jesus in the city of Jerusalem to begin fleeing the city by those who took Jesus’ words literally. They left because they could see what was coming and Jesus had warned them about what was coming. They fled across the Jordan River and they were protected from the siege by Titus which began shortly after the insurgent uprising. Those who fled were protected from all that followed. Over 1 million people died in the siege of Jerusalem. In Luke 21:20-24 we read: “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.” UNTIL THE TIMES OF THE GENTILES ARE FULFILLED - This passage in Luke has been fulfilled in our day. Pastor shares a brief history of the city of Jerusalem from 70AD to the mid 20th century of when the city of Jerusalem was dominated by gentiles. Romans Byzantines Persians Byzantines Crusaders Ottoman Turks WWI British control WWII - The Jewish people were given a homeland in 1948 Six Day War - 1967 City of Jerusalem came under control of the Jewish people and has remained in their control in an uneasy peace. THIS IS SOMETHING JESUS SAID AND IT WAS FULFILLED IN OUR LIFE TIME. "The times of the gentiles are fulfilled"... what does that mean? Does that refer simply to gentile control of Jerusalem? Or does it mean far more? Romans 9, 10, and 11 talk about the Jewish people returning to the Messiah. When they return to Him - the end comes! We don’t know the day or hour - but He tells us when we see these things happening, look up because our redemption is drawing near. Jesus’ final return will be like lightening filling the sky. He will come on cloud in great glory! As the discourse continues in Matthew 24 - 25 we read about the following: ⁃ Fig Tree Imagery - Jesus prophesies that the end is near when we again see Israel beginning to flourish then we know “summer is near” (the end is coming) ⁃ Jesus says, “This generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.” THIS GENERATION - generation in Greek has multiple meanings - one meaning refers to “this people” the other to “this nation” and in Aramaic (Jesus’ language of the day) the word for generation and the word for nation are the same word. It may well be that what Jesus is declaring is that the Jewish people will not come to an end - they will survive. And they have. ⁃ Judgement by fire ⁃ Be awake! ⁃ Do not grow weary in doing what is right ⁃ Follow Jesus - receive Him as King, Savior and Lord ⁃ Last days and times will be difficult - so we are called to walk close to God ⁃ Then Jesus shares several parables to emphasize what He has been teaching. ⁃ The Parable of the Ten Virgins - Be ready for Jesus’ return. Pastor shares what Jewish weddings were like in Jesus’ day and how knowing that brings insight to this parable to be encouraged to be awake and to be ready for Christ’s return. Scriptures Psalm 22, John 19:24 God provides remarkable glimpses of Jesus in the Old Testament. Psalm 22 speaks to our hearts – when we feel abandoned by God. Psalm 22 speaks to our minds – foretelling the suffering of Jesus 1,000 years beforehand Psalm 22 is all about Jesus’ suffering but also about His triumph. What happened to Jesus at His crucifixion is the fulfillment of prophesy. Jesus fulfilled all that was written about the Messiah in the Old Testament. John, an eyewitness, the only one of the apostles who was there when Jesus was crucified, witnessed His cry from the cross, witness the agony Jesus suffered. The very things that that we read in Psalm 22 are witness by John and we read that in John 19. Take a look at John 19:24, “‘Let’s not tear it,’ they said to one another. ‘Let’s decide by lot who will get it.’ Now look at Psalm 22:18 which was written 1000 years earlier, “‘They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.’” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled. Psalm 22 is a remarkable word, prophetic words, and they truly do foreshadow Jesus’ suffering. But the good news is they don’t just foreshadow His suffering they also foreshadow His triumph. Listen to the way this Psalm ends. Psalm 22:24, speaking of this One who has cried out, “My God, my God why have you forsaken me?”, speaking of this anguished sufferer who says that a company of evildoers have surrounded him, that they have pierced His hands and His feet, speaking of this One of whom it is said, “They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.”, it says of this despised sufferer, “He has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one.” In other words, God has not despised Jesus. He has not hidden His face from Jesus, but has listened to His cry for help. Verse 25, “From you comes the theme of My praise in the great assembly; before those who fear You I will fulfill my vows.” Then, verse 27, “All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him, for dominion belongs to the LORD, and He rules over the nations. All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will kneel before him – those who cannot keep themselves alive. Posterity will serve Him; future generations will be told about the Lord. They will proclaim His righteousness, declaring to a people yet unborn; He has done it!” A quote from Dr. Michael Brown, “In Psalm 22, we see God answering the cry of the anguished sufferer with a deliverance so extraordinary that it results in 3 things: 1. Worldwide praise and adoration 2. The testimony of God’s saving power 3. Turning of gentile nations to God” Looking at these words from Psalm 22, anyone with an open mind who knows anything about the Lord Jesus would just naturally say, “Wow! This seems to be talking about Him.” Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to share these words with other people, people who had no idea where they came from, uniformly the response from Gentile and Jew alike has been, “Oh my, those words are talking about Jesus, aren’t they?” Then people are astonished when they find that they came from the Old Testament and they were written 1000 years earlier. This is a remarkable foreshadowing and it is not simply an object of academic interest. This has profound impact for you and for me, because it simply means that all along God has known what has laid ahead. It means all along He was planning for the Messiah to suffer as He did on that cross, bearing in His own body the penalty for us all. It means that God knows how desperately you and I need forgiveness, that only a perfect sacrifice can bring. It means that without Jesus we have nothing, but that with Him we have everything. What a foreshadowing, what a Savior, and what a powerful word from God. Psalm 22 shows us the measure of God’s love and that is powerful! Jesus desperately wants you to know Him, and He invites you to receive Him by faith and to experience the joy of His presence and the Power of His Holy Spirit. Acts 8:26-39, Psalm 51:7, Isaiah 53 God offers His invitation to every single one of us. Pastor opens today's class with a story from Ruth Bell Graham's life (the wife of Billy Graham) and how personalizing chapter 53 of the book of Isaiah in the Bible changed her life. Our scripture story today is the story of an angel telling Philip to go south on the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. On the road, Philip meets a eunuch who is an Ethiopian high official in charge of the treasury. He is on his way home from Jerusalem. When God calls, when God invites, we ought to answer, we ought to respond, and Philip did. Things to learn from this story: 1. God loves individual people. 2. God especially seeks seekers. 3. God arranges encounters. The Spirit of God told Philip to go to the Ethiopian’s chariot and stay near. As Philip approaches, he hears the man reading out loud chapter 53 of Isaiah and Philip asks the him if he understands what he is reading. And the eunuch says he can’t unless someone explains it to him and so he invites Philip up into his carriage so that Philip can explain the powerful words that we find in this chapter. It is a chapter that talks about Jesus and who he is. Philip shares the good news about Jesus. This chapter that changed, Ruth Bell Graham's life had previously changed the Ethiopian’s life. Through Philip answering God’s call, the Ethiopian is given the invitation to experience life forever through faith in Jesus who died for him, for you, for me and who rose from the grave and who is coming back. The Ethiopian believed, and they stopped the chariot so that he could be baptized. Have you received the invitation? Have you received the invitation to believe on Jesus as your Savior? When examined in light of 1st Century culture, the "scandal" of crucifixion, the visible empty tomb, and the transformation of lives in generations of believers, the Biblical evidence for the Resurrection supports only one conclusion: Christ is risen - He is risen indeed!
Up To Jerusalem - Teaching 7 Scripture - Matthew 23:1-39, Mark 12:41-42, Matthew 24:1-16, Psalm 51:10, 2 Timothy 3:11 Class opens with a teaching from Jesus on humility and His warning against hypocrisy. The Seven Woes - spoken against hypocrisy: 1. Verse 13 - roadblocks to the kingdom of heaven for people 2. Verse 15 - produce more hypocrites 3. Verse 16-22 - make a show of displaying how much they give to the temple 4. Verse 23-24 - neglect justice, mercy and faithfulness 5. Verse 25-26 - love to display outward cleanliness 6. Verse 27-28 - do things to look good 7. Verse 29-32 - act like they are better than others. An outward show - as good as it may look to others - does not matter at all to God. In fact, it destroys a relationship with God. The seven woes are Jesus’ call to us to make sure our hearts are right with Him. This same kind of hypocrisy is just as present today as it was then. Jesus is reminding us that what God looks at is the heart - a heart committed to Him - and one that is humble before Him and humble before others. God’s work is to take the hard stony parts of our hearts and replace them with a renewed heart. King David says, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10. We are to come before God in humility and repentance through faith in Jesus and there we will find joy, peace and life. Jesus emphasizes humility with the story of the Widow’s Offering in Mark 12:41-42. Jesus is observing the people as they drop off their offerings. The rich are making a show of how much they are giving and then a widow places only a few cents in the bowl - but it was all she had - unlike the “leftovers” the others had been making a show of giving. She gave the greatest gift as she displayed living by faith and trusting God to provide. We pick up the Up to Jerusalem chronology with Matthew 24:1-16 with Jesus telling of the temple’s future destruction. The disciples then ask Jesus 2 questions: 1. When will the temple be destroyed 2. What will be the sign of Jesus’ second coming They didn’t realize how separated the 2 events would be. Jesus answers by predicting deception, war and rumors of wars, earthquakes and famines and calls these the beginning of birth pains. Implying that as the end comes nearer, these things would be more frequent and greater. Jesus also shares that there will be persecution of the believers. Jesus ends by telling that the Gospel message will be preached throughout the whole world and then the end will come. We can see the evidence of what Jesus said as we see the Gospel message into every continent today. The time of His coming is nearer and nearer and we are called to be awake and ready! Jesus goes on to talk about the “abomination that causes desolation” and that when they see this happening to flee Jerusalem. Pastor shares several possibilities of what the abomination may have been. He also speaks to the question of whether Jesus’ words speak to the last generation as well. We end with seeing that the early believers did as Jesus said, they escaped the judgement that came on Jerusalem by leaving and fleeing as Jesus had said - and so we learn how important it is for us to hear and to heed God’s Words, not fearing the future, but facing the future in faith.
