Pete Swenson is our guest, and he's here to talk straight about the ski mountaineering racing scene. Swenson wears many hats, but for the Lycra set, he's most well-known for starting the COSMIC race series here in Colorado. Beyond his legacy of speed, Swenson has been a forthright advocate for the racing scene. And as you'll hear on the episode, he's thought quite a bit about how to sustainably grow the sport and make it a more viable option for recreational fitness skiers and those keen on besting a Strava segment. As we move into an Olympic year where ski mountaineering will be featured, Doug, Randy, and Swenson dream of bigger things to come, which you'll hear about on Episode 124. Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast. Doug takes a winter reprieve and heads south, way-way south, for some sunshine, pedaling, and horseriding—giddy up. Chile is today's primary destination. With a family trip planned to Chilean Patagonia, our resident fun hog, Doug, sheds light on the excellence and adventure of the region's freeform and manicured mountain bike riding. There's fjords and alpine and all the in-between to take in. But really, you came for the skiing or the potential for skiing. Although it's high summer in Chile, Doug takes a few strolls in the saddle and convinces himself that his next ski adventure should include wrangling horses, packing them up with a not-so-light load, and heading for the hills for some turn-making. Horse packing may be Doug's new thing, CCBC will not be carrying horse and tackle supplies anytime soon. On Episode 123 of the Totally Deep Podcast: Off to Patagonia, not Arizona. Traveling with a bike. The how-to get your bike under 50-pound trick. "I rode some serious horses." The outdoor rec economy in this Chilean region. Riding with the locals. The potential to backcountry ski. (Sometimes with horses.) Randy goes skinning. Snow in Austin! Rallying, despite the jet lag, to go ski. Thanks for listening and joining us for the 2024-2025 season. As daylight shortens and we approach the winter solstice, some rejoicing and carol singing has been going down in some parts of the country. Ample snow is on the ground. Let the snow sliding begin. Randy and Doug connect in this episode to discuss a wide range of topics, from a new store opening in Silverthorne to ATK's entry into the hybrid binding scene. No matter what you have come for, you'll note a shift from cycling into the serene world of skiing uphill, clicking in, and seeking turns. Snow in the hills reminds us that gravity and instabilities are parts of the backcountry experience. Stay focused, educated, and be wise. Happy holidays from the Cripple Creek crew. For his part to make a quick pivot into winter, Doug picks up the ski touring mantle with some jaunts up Highland Bowl and fine early-season tour in Marble. Doug's announcement that he may be eyeing a life with less travel to non-local races may come as shocking news to some. The door to a new life of competing in only local events comes in handy if you want to avoid traveling to Europe for a race and having it canceled. Ultimately, Hill settled in the Roaring Fork Valley and began fixating on the skimo scene. What you'll find in this episode, and in Hill's advice, is a relative calmness when it comes to performing your best. There's talk of improving sport-specific economy by focusing on technique and taking a lengthy break— for up to three weeks—to refresh and reboot between your sport-specific seasons. Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast. Episode 118 features CCBC Carbondale store manager Nick Penzel and his take on the dad scene. To be clear, Nick is not a dad; he has one, and he has a specific take on dads in the front and backcountry. Trigger warning: dads, come with an open mind as Nick has some more revolutions around the sun until he too understands dad-realm. Another key factor is that Randy is a new dad. As a new dad, he's maybe feeling less spry than normal and looking for some good medicine—what he refers to as his dad-mod, not exactly a dad-bod. There's no leaving Doug out of the episode's commentary. What is true is that Doug is wiggling into a small Dynafit-branded Speed Jean. We can only imagine what these are: Part skimo outfit aprés attire? A cotton-Lycra blend? Doug is not a dad and isn't that slow, but he knows many dads who crush. We digress. Back to Nick. As a store manager, Nick gets to eye and fondle gear daily. You'll get his take on the gear for dads and non-dads alike in episode 118. On Episode 118 of the Totally Deep Podcast: Randy's epic: Driving through the night from TX. to CO. and acclimatizing. Group rides and shuttles—Doug finds clarity. The quick-hit Mexico volcano trip.
