The AVR Podcast features some of the most interesting people in the city as they talk about what, how, and why they create. Whether it's music, art, or any other form of creativity, I get the full story on how the vision came to be, and how it then became a reality. The primary focus is on underground musicians, innovative artists, and revolutionary creators of all sorts in the beautiful city of Richmond, Virginia. This program aims to be a meeting ground for creators and innovators of all types, a place to share ideas, and a place to tell the stories of the countless creative individuals and organizations that make RVA such a wonderful and exciting place to be. We try to talk as much about the history of my guests and their specific realm of creativity as much as possible, but occasionally we get side tracked and talk about whatever the hell we want!

On the last episode before the AVR's winter break, I had the opportunity of speaking with The Talkies. Formed less than a year ago through spontaneous jamming and a literal proposal to the bassist, the group's unique style blends elements of indie, punk, and shoegaze to produce a sound that is as engaging as it is refreshing. We spoke a bit about the origins of the band, their DIY recording process, and the groups love of house shows. Check out the link to their Bandcamp below to listen to their three EPs, all impressively release in three consecutive months this past summer! A big thanks to The Talkies and everyone who has listened to and supported the podcast so far! Y'all are my heroes! Deer Eat Birds joins me on this episode, a band I've seen quite a few times over the past year and have loved every performance. We discuss their childhoods, getting into music at a young age, how the band formed, and their techniques for songwriting, recording, and delivering an engaging live performance. Almost inevitably, throughout this episode, hilarity ensues. They have just released their new EP, Hi Rez, on Soundcloud and it is absolutely incredible. On this episode, I speak with local reggae band Space Koi! Their EP, Skank Jam, is full of fun, exciting songs with classic punk, reggae, and blues vibes, all with a special Richmond twist. We talk a little bit about how each member of the band has been connected deeply to music from a very young age, and how that has shaped their love of music and their desire to create. Also, we spoke about the recording process, and Garrett offers a few tips about how to record while on a budget. They also describe some of the hardships of pursuing a life in music, and reveal the fact that most of their time is spent working on music in some way. Don't forget to check out Space Koi at Emilio's every first Wednesday of the month (the next show being 11/2)!
