About Profit First Serial entrepreneur Mike Michalowicz has developed a behavioral approach to accounting to flip the formula: Sales - Profit = Expenses. Michalowicz shows that by taking profit first and apportioning only what remains for expenses, entrepreneurs will transform their businesses from cash-eating monsters to profitable cash cows. (Source: Amazon) Sarah’s Favorite Quotes “Growth is the battle cry of nearly every entrepreneur and business leader. Grow! Grow! Grow!… Growth is only half the equation… Most business owners try to grow their way out of their problems...but the result is simply a bigger monster.” “Profit is not an event. Profit is not something that happened at the year end or at the end of your five-year plan or Sunday. Profit isn’t something that waits until tomorrow. Profit must happen now and always. Profit must be baked into your business. Every day, every transaction, every moment. Profit is not an event. Profit is a habit.” “Give yourself more joy when you choose not to spend money than do you do when you choose to spend it...Celebrate every time you save – whether it’s 10 bucks or 10,000.” Shaunae’s Favorite Quotes "Money problems happen when: sales slow down, sales speed up (expenses go up too)" "Bigger is NOT Always Better: more revenue does not mean you are more successful" "Growth is only half the equation, Let the right size business find YOU!" “Profit must happen now and always, profit is not an event, it’s a habit.” “Revenue is vanity, profit is sanity, and cash is king” Helpful Links Mentioned in This Episode Purchase Your Copy of Profit First: https://amzn.to/318yVRS Find The Creative Legacy Podcast Online: Website: thecreativelegacypodcast.com Instagram: instagram.com/thecreativelegacypodcast Facebook: facebook.com/thecreativelegacypodcast Facebook Group: facebook.com/groups/thecreativelegacypodcast Find Sarah Online: Website: sarahschraderdesign.com Instagram: instagram.com/sarahschraderdesign Facebook: facebook.com/sarahschraderdesign Find Shaunae Online: Website: shaunae.com Instagram: instagram.com/shaunaeteske Facebook: facebook.com/shaunaeteskephotography…

It's 2020 and video marketing is here to stay, but often under utilized! We had the opportunity to sit down with video marketing strategist, Marvin Flavien to talk about how to best use video within our businesses to take advantage of the powerful tool. And don't worry, he talks about getting past the feeling of discomfort in front of the camera too! Video is powerful Video is a powerful way to bring people into your business – to see it and to get a feel for what it is like to work with you before they even experience it themselves. It takes people on a journey of your business and how you would work with them. "There is a difference between knowing how to make a video and knowing how to get video to work for you. Once you decipher those two businesses can see how to get power in these video." Build a relationship with the camera "When you are more of yourself on camera you seem more confident. The only way to get better is to keep doing it." Marvin suggests Instagram Stories as a great way to get started with video. But remember, it’s not about us. it’s about the people on the other side. How do you want to connect with them? What value do you want to bring them? Figure out what the goal is Number one thing: figure out what the goal is and how we want video to work for us. Too often people forget about the strategy behind a video. But without strategy we are simply left with a pretty video that won't do much of anything. Learning to balance business and travel was definitely a learning experience for Sarah as she embraced the digital nomad lifestyle. In this episode she is sharing some of the lessons, both expected and unexpected, that she learned while traveling for four months outside of the country in 2019. Embrace JOMO We've all heard of FOMO, the fear of missing out, but have you tried JOMO, the joy of missing out? This was the first lesson Sarah learned while working remotely; especially with a group of 40 other individuals. With so much to explore and do embracing the JOMO to feel productive about getting work done, having your personal time or not saying yes to a commitment that you might not really be into is a blessing to working remotely. Find Spaces that Work for You Not every space is for you! When you are traveling and still needing to put in your office hours, finding the space where you feel comfortable, inspired and are able to focus is essential! Sarah shares how while in Lisbon she did not find herself productive in the co-working space she had access to, but her apartment was the perfect place to get in those work sessions so she could follow it up with a bit of exploration and play. Create Boundaries You know your deadlines and commitments, so make sure you set boundaries to meet them. The lure of adventure and exploring a new place can be so enticing, but you do still have a business to run. Find the schedule that works for you. It might be: You explore in the morning and work later in the day so you are working when your clients are active as well You working in the morning so you are free of distraction and having your time to be adventurous after the job is done You commit to a full day(s) of work so you can take a day or two off and dedicate it just to seeing what is around you and diving into the culture Find Minimalism & Ways to Adapt Between having to travel with everything you pack and airline weight restrictions you have to learn to adapt. If you are a pen to paper lover like us it might be finding some ways to switch up to digital. The large whiteboard Sarah uses at home would definitely not fit in her luggage! Adapting to a digital calendar and more online tools helped to pack light. Start Small If this is something that sounds like a dream but you are hesitant - start small. Travel to a different city or state near you for a week and try it out. Or if you are used to working in an office, break the routine and try working in coffeeshops for a week. The change and putting yourself out of your comfort zone will help you decide if it is the right decision for you. Helpful Links Mentioned in This Episode: Save $200 on a Remote Year itinerary ! About Laylee Emadi Laylee is an educator, podcast host, and photographer with a heart for serving clients and fellow creatives. She believes in serving the creative industry with heartfelt encouragement, honest advice, and a shared pursuit of the ever-elusive “balance.” Laylee is passionate about her goal to help you feel confident in your ability to make a difference, create impact, and to build a life doing what you love. When Is It the Right Time to Offer Education First ask yourself, “Why are you pursuing education?” If the only answer is, “Well it feels like the next step,” then education actually might not be for you. Becoming an educator takes a lot of selfless work and only when you truly want to help others should you enter this field. If you do want to serve others and are feeling successful and profitable in your business or are a super talented craftsman and want to share your talent - the “when” is whenever you feel ready to take it on. The “why” behind education is the important question to ask. The Different Types of Education One-on-One Small Group Mastermind Public Speaking Online Education & Courses What Makes a Good Educator Wanting to spread your knowledge and share your expertise is great, but it’s important to make sure you are an actual expert in your field. Ask others if your content has actually helped them, always ask for feedback. Another good way to know is if people are asking you for help. Do they want to know how you do something? This is a great indicator that others want to actually learn from you. Put out free content first and gauge people’s interest, see if they want to continue learning from you. Saying “No” is a Gift The word “No” can feel like such a negative. We don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings by turning something down. But we find that when we say yes to every single thing that is asked of us, we can run ourselves too thin. We can face burnout or become resentful. By saying no to something, it allows you to say yes to things that matter and are important to you. Saying no doesn’t make you a bad person, it doesn’t mean you're spiteful or mean. It just means you have your priorities in place, you know your limits, and you can handle the workload in front of you. Setting Appropriate Boundaries for your Business It’s difficult to say no when it comes to business. You want to seize every opportunity and make every connection possible. But saying no is about balance. Determine your schedule, your pricing, your time commitments - EVERYTHING before you start taking on more work or saying yes to other things. Maybe people are asking for favors or additional help, first check in with yourself and your business. Really ask yourself if you have the time and energy to fully give yourself over to that request. If not, then it’s absolutely okay to say, “No, thanks.” 10 Ways to Say “No” and Still Be Kind With a compliment: “This sounds like a great opportunity but I have to pass.” Share your reason: “Thank you but I actually won’t have time for this.” Be brief but not rude: “Thanks, but I can’t.” Leave room for a “Yes” in the future: “I would love to but at this time I cannot. Please keep my name in mind for the future.” No, but: “I may not be able to help you, but let me refer you to my friend.” Ask later: “I’m not taking on new projects until June, can you please reach out to me then?” You’re booked: “Thanks for thinking of me but my schedule is full.” Not compatible: “Thank you so much but I actually don’t think we’d be a great fit.” Giving thanks: “Thank you, I’m so grateful you thought of me but I cannot help you at this time.” Just No: “Thanks but I’m good.” Helpful Links Mentioned in This Episode: Book - The Best Yes by Lysa Terkeurst Find The Creative Legacy Podcast Online: Website: thecreativelegacypodcast.com Instagram: instagram.com/thecreativelegacypodcast Facebook: facebook.com/thecreativelegacypodcast Facebook Group: facebook.com/groups/thecreativelegacypodcast Find Sarah Online: Website: sarahschraderdesign.com Instagram: instagram.com/sarahschraderdesign Facebook: facebook.com/sarahschraderdesign Find Shaunae Online: Website: shaunae.com Instagram: instagram.com/shaunaeteske Facebook: facebook.com/shaunaeteskephotography…

Thinking About Client Experience and Your Business Client experience is important for your business but it can sometimes get overlooked when trying to work on your business. A great way to check in on your client experience is to imagine yourself as a client or customer. Think about businesses and brands that you enjoy. What is it about those businesses that draw you in? What are they doing differently from other businesses? How do they make you feel? When you put yourself in the perspective of the client, you can start to determine new ways to make your customers feel more heard, respected, and appreciated. Steps for Creating a Customer Experience Your client experience will grow and develop over time. The best way to start implementing changes in your customer experience or to recognize where you need to add more is to map all your interactions with a client or customer. Map out the entire process from when they find you to when they hire you to when your finished product or service is complete. Once it’s mapped out, go into each touch-point with your client and find how you can add value to that interaction. Set expectations for your clients and follow through every time. Find ways to go above and beyond for them. Have you ever wondered what it’s like to actually be married to a creative business owner? Or maybe you are creative and you’re trying to explain to your spouse what you’re going through? In this episode, Shaunae’s husband, Matt, is here to share all about it. He is openly and honestly sharing what it is like being married to a creative entrepreneur and how they balance marriage and business. Explaining Entrepreneurship to Your Partner Whether you are in a relationship and beginning a small business or you are already a small business owner and looking to start a relationship, being open and honest about your job and your commitments is essential for getting everyone on the same page. For Shaunae as a wedding photographer, her weekends were always booked with weddings and photo shoots. Being honest with Matt about her schedule allowed them to navigate other ways to see each other and build a relationship based on each other’s needs. They had to make the intentional choice to make time for each other and built their relationship on intentionality. Finding Support in Entrepreneurship Discussing business ideas and opportunities can sometimes be challenging when you have to check in with your partner. Maybe you are ready to take a new leap in your business but your partner isn’t a 100% behind you on that venture. Take time to talk about the pros and cons with business decisions. Be honest about why you are doing something and think about what you could bring in or give up by taking on something new. If your partner isn’t an entrepreneur, there will definitely be a transitional time of them learning more about what it’s like to own a business. Be patient and explain what it’s like for you. Together you will find a balance of how to support one another. Setting Up Boundaries in Your Business Setting up boundaries can take time and can change when your business or life changes. Choose days that are important to you and your partner that you will put work aside for. Birthdays, holidays, anniversaries - whatever is important to you, put business on the back burner for that day (if you can.) If you are working from home, let your partner know your “work hours” so they know just because you’re home, doesn’t mean you’re available. When you communicate your real boundaries to each other, you make it very clear what is okay and not okay. About Matt’s Professional Career Matt has been a creative his entire life. He grew up in Iowa and attended Iowa State University for Graphic Design. After graduation, he took an internship with the Green Bay Packers in 2015. Upon completing his internship, they offered him a position as Digital UX Coordinator. For five years, he held that position and worked for the digital team, helping build and advance projects. In March of 2020, he officially accepted a new position as Digital Platforms Manager with the Seattle Seahawks. About Creative Calling In this book, author Chase Jarvis, the founder of CreativeLive, shows why creativity is the new mindfulness and as important to our health as meditation, exercise, and nutrition. It's also available to everyone-beginners and lifelong creators, entrepreneurs and corporate executives. Jarvis illustrates the critical elements for making creative expression the path to fulfillment with his memorable “IDEA” system to imagine your big dream, design daily practices that support it, execute on your ambitions plans and make your vision real and amplify your impact through community The good news, according to Jarvis, is that creativity isn't a skill-it's a habit. It's a force inside every person that wants to be set free and-if harnessed and put to work-can transform our lives and bring vitality to everything we do. You are creative by nature, endowed with a near limitless capacity to make and grow new things. Accessing this capacity requires a kind of creative muscle that must be strengthened to achieve your full potential. By identifying as a creative person, accepting the world around you as your canvas, and manifesting your ideas regularly, you will intuitively create the life you truly want for yourself. Favorite Quotes: “Some people say fake it till you make it. Forget that. Make it till you make it. Creators create. It doesn’t matter who you know, what schools you attended, which parties you’re invited to, or what you’re wearing. Creators create. Action is identity. You become what you do. You don’t need permission… “You’ve got to do the verb to be the noun.” “There is nothing noble, edgy, or cool about being a starving artist.” “Be the hero of your own life. Walk your own path. When obstacles arise, go over, under, or around them. When you lose your way, listen for the call. Your heart will always lead you.” “Your life has two big arcs. The first is about acquisition, acquiring knowledge about yourself and the world - figuring out how to meet your own needs… The second is about contribution. You start thinking about how you can serve others and make a lasting impression on the world. We take, and then we give.” “ You are a creative person. The world is abundant and full of possibilities. Your situation can always be changed. You can use your creativity to create the change you seek. Creativity is natural and healthy but requires practice. Creativity is ultimate personal power.” “Don’t think about making art,” he said. “Just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.” "Creativity is generous, life-changing, mind-altering, and practical as hell. In fact, it's only creating in small ways every day that we come to understand that we can create big changes in our lives when we desire or need them most." "Life gets so much easier once you decide to play your own game. Don't just try to be better. Be different." "There is no reason ti hide. Be bold. Take smart risks. Embrace failure like an old friend. People respect a wrong move made with confidence far more than a correct one made without conviction." Feeling stressed? Tired? Foggy? Your body is telling you it needs help. When our body isn’t functioning properly, this can affect our mental health and our business too! Instead of just “powering through,” we need to address what’s going on in our bodies. In today’s episode, we are discussing tuning into your body - how it’s feeling and functioning, what it needs, and ways you can give back to it. Our Favorite Skincare Treat Your skin will let you know if you are feeling stressed or not well. Certain foods or lack of water can make it go crazy too. That’s why giving it love with face masks and rollers is so helpful. We absolutely LOVE our rose quartz facial rollers. These rollers are the perfect way to treat yourself. Not only are they great for your skin, they improve blood circulation in your face, help with sinuses, decreases puffiness, and soothes your skin. Keep your roller stored in a fridge - a cool roller tightens your pores and wakes up your face at the end of a long day. Shaunae’s Experience with Whole30 Food plays a huge role in our bodies. It can be used to fuel us and give us all the wonderful energy we need. Shaunae wanted to see how food could affect how she felt so her and her husband tried Whole30. Whole30 emphasizes whole foods and eliminates sugar, alcohol, grains, legumes, soy, and dairy. Though it did have it’s tough moments, it was eye-opening to see how you can really give love to your body with whole foods. They feel SO much lighter, healthier, and happier. There are so many benefits like sleeping restfully and having plenty of productive energy. But Shaunae’s favorite result has to be the way she looks at food now. She had to read the ingredients in everything. This program really made them THINK about what you actually put in your body. Additional Tips to Tune into Your Body Going to a chiropractor at least once a week can improve your health and wellness. Some of the benefits of chiropractic care include pain relief, improved energy levels, decreased inflammation, increased mobility, better immune function, and regulated hormone function. Acupuncture is another great way. It is an alternative therapy that involves inserting thin needles into targeted areas of the body that help you in so many ways. Reiki is also a great way to not only help your body, but help your energy too. Reiki is a healing technique where a therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body. Meditation is a beautiful way to check in with yourself. Meditating allows you to free your mind from all the thoughts and stresses of the day and just focus on one thing. It can help you relax, sleep better, and stay focused for your day ahead. Our friend and fellow creative entrepreneur, Nicole Bergeson, joins us on today’s episode to cover all things email marketing. From building your list (even if it’s at zero), how often you should be sending emails, and learning exactly what a welcome sequence is - Nicole covers all of that and MORE! As Nicole says, “Don’t take email marketing too seriously. It doesn’t have to be scary. It’s just another avenue of your marketing and it can create a great community of people.” About Nicole Meet Nicole! Owner of Nicole Bergeson Strategy and she helps creatives make sense of digital marketing while empowering them to embrace their uniqueness, share their knowledge, and become more intentional online in order to make more sales. She’s also an illustrator, small business cheerleader, wife, boy-mom, enneagram type 7, and year-round iced coffee drinker. What is the Purpose of Email Marketing? Nicole explains that email is the “billboard of digital marketing.” Email can be targeted to an ideal audience. It’s an effective way to create community, share who you are, and make sales. Statistics show that 80% of marketers still claim that email is best for keeping customers. 60% of consumers say that email is their preferred way to get promotions. How Do You Grow Your Email List? Legally, people have to opt-in to your email list, you cannot just add them. Before you grow your list, step back and acknowledge who your audience is. We have to be invited into the inboxes of our subscribers so make sure you are giving them valuable content. Whether by choice or my circumstance, we are faced with uncomfortable situations often. They can feel risky, anxious-ridden, and sometimes scary. It could be a choice you made, a leap of faith into a new adventure. Or it could be something completely out of your control, like losing your job or changes in your health. No matter the situation though, there is always beauty and growth that comes from uncomfortableness. It’s time to embrace it! Shaunae Begins the Episode with a Quote from Her Blog “If I never went through that uncomfortable feeling of inadequacy, I never would have realized how important it was for me to overcome it. I’ve had other tragedies, hardships, and transitions in my life that have felt SO uncomfortable that I just wanted to jump out of my skin! But you have to go on! We have to go through those icky, uncomfortable moments in life to reach our higher destiny. To grow stronger and help others. To learn something new about ourselves. To dig deeper into the core of who we are. You’ll never learn anything if life is easy. You’ll never grow. It may not be fun but I promise you, that uncomfortable feeling is only temporary. I became comfortable with feeling uncomfortable and I hope you do the same. Feeling uncomfortable is a good thing! It strengthens us and helps us change into the people we are meant to be.” Shaunae’s Real Life Examples of Feeling Uncomfortable Growing up, she was painfully shy. Her aunt guided her in this journey and told her to lift her head up and walk with confidence, to engage with others. It was difficult during that time but with every new interaction, it became easier and helped Shaunae to be the outgoing, friendly person she is today. But it all started from a very uncomfortable beginning. She also graduated high school at only 17, moved across the country to attend college, and felt absolutely homesick. She powered through and is so grateful that she did because it led her to start her photography business once she graduated. Sarah’s Real Life Examples of Feeling Uncomfortable Getting up in front of classes to speak always scared Sarah. Even early in her career, this fear stayed with her. Her boss recognized her fear and helped her improve with a group called Toastmasters. It helped her become aware of what she was doing, how she was speaking, and helped her realize that nothing bad is going to happen when she is speaking in front of people. Getting Uncomfortable in Business “No risk, no reward.” Taking leaps in your business - going full time, hiring staff members, etc - can be a scary, uncomfortable thing. Even if you have a plan in place, it’s okay to feel scared in the moment. But don’t let that stop you. Push through and keep going until you make it out on the other side. Shaunae shares the quote she says all the time at her home, “Do it afraid.” Fear is okay, use it to benefit you, instead of control you. 1 The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson - April Book Club 32:45

About This Month’s Book For decades, we’ve been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let’s be honest, shit is f cked and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn’t sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is—a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let’s-all-feel-good mindset that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up. Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited—"not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault." Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek. Source About Mark Manson Mark is an author, blogger, entrepreneur, and personal development consultant. Mark grew up in Austin, Texas, graduated from Boston University in 2007, and a couple years later, started an online business and blog. Over the next few years, he traveled all over the world, working as a blogger full-time. He now lives in New York City with his wife and continues to help people through his blog and his books. Sarah’s Takeaway I had major Gary Vaynerchuck and Grant Cardone vibes while reading this book. Manson is very straight forward and to the point about the ideas he presents in his book. But he also shares relatable examples to help you understand. After you get past the first chapter that is filled with a few more f-words, you will find an immense amount of gold within the pages of this book to help you find what it means to not put your energy into caring about what doesn't matter so you can give it to what is most important to you. Shaunae’s Takeaway I was a little worried this book would be all swear words and fluff, but I was so wrong. This book is full of great content. Mark shares that it’s not about being indifferent, it’s about putting value on the right things. Mark shares his thoughts and humor in the best possible way. My favorite part of the book is when he gets into five counterintuitive values that we should adopt. Values like taking responsibility for our actions, the willingness to discover our own flaws, contemplating our own mortality, and more. Favorite Quotes: “Because here’s another sneaky little truth about life. You can’t be an important and life-changing presence for some people without also being a joke and an embarrassment to others.” “We suffer for the simple reason that suffering is biologically useful. It is nature’s preferred agent for inspiring change.” “Don’t hope for a life without problems. There’s no such thing. Instead, hope for a life full of good problems.” “Because happiness requires struggle. It grows from problems. Joy doesn’t just sprout out of the ground like daisies and rainbows. Real, serious, lifelong fulfillment and meaning have to be earned through the choosing and managing of our struggles.” "Negative emotions are a call to action. When you feel them, it’s because you’re supposed to do something. Positive emotions, on the other hand , are rewards for taking positive action. When you feel them, life seems simple and there is nothing else to do but enjoy it. Then, like everything else, the positive emotions go away, because more problems inevitably emerge." “If you want to change how you see your problems, you have to change what you value and/or how you measure failure/success.” "The only difference between a problem being painful of being powerful is a sense that we chose it, and that we are responsible for it." “Don’t just sit there. Do something. The answers will follow.” "Action isn’t just the effect of motivation; it’s also the cause of it." “Confronting the reality of our own mortality is important because it obliterates all the crappy, fragile, superficial values in life. While most people whittle their days chasing another buck, or a little bit more fame and attention, or a little bit more assurance that they’re right or loved, death confronts all of us with a far more painful and important question: What is your legacy?” Pick up your copy of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck! Building a new business can be scary. Starting a new journey in your life can seem overwhelming. But when you choose to live by faith and not fear, the world opens up to you. Of course, there will still be challenges and obstacles to overcome but you will be better equipped to handle it. In today’s episode, we are joined by Myles Berrio - a wedding and commercial photographer, serial entrepreneur, and author. Without a traditional business background, Myles showed up every day and put in the work to create and run multiple businesses. He credits choosing faith over fear to his success in business and in life. About Myles Berrio Myles is a 26-year-old wedding and commercial photographer living in Atlanta, GA. His life entails traveling all over the US and the world capturing the love stories of all types of couples while also being blessed to work with some of the largest, most well known companies such as Target, Netflix, Uber Eats, WeWork, and Revolve. As much as he would like to be called a photographer, at heart he really is an entrepreneur. Aside from photography he also enjoys his other businesses in consulting, e-commerce, and the food industry. He is a published author working on his second book. To sum it all up, most people will say he’s usually the happiest guy in the room. To Build Your Business and Your Life in Faith and Not Fear You end up creating what it is that you’re afraid of when you live your life through fear. Opportunities and doors start opening when you live your life by faith. When you live through faith, it doesn’t mean it will always be easy but it will always work out for you. When you go into business, your business might fail for a certain amount of time but that doesn’t always mean it will fail forever. If you are willing to trust, learn what you don’t know, and put in the work, you can make any business successful. Practical Tips to Live in Faith Over Fear Start with what you have and where you are. You can begin by building a habit of taking opportunities and strengthening your faith. Commit to saying “yes” to new things that you really want to do. It’s important to not let your excuses rule your life. Recognize when excuses pop up and figure out your best way to overcome them. Know who you are and determine what motivates you the most, that will push you towards your destiny. If there are beliefs you have today that are impairing your ability to move in the direction of where you want to go in life, then you can let go of those beliefs and accept new beliefs. How to Say “No” to Fear When It Creeps Back In Fear will never leave you completely. Even the most successful people in business still deal with fear and imposter syndrome. When the fear creeps back in, it’s important to remember what keeps you going. Your why in business. Remember why you wanted to start this business in the first place. You need to choose a why that’s bigger than yourself that will challenge you even when fear comes back. Fear will have no power over you. A few weeks ago, we all experienced a little taste of what would happen if social media just went away. Facebook and Instagram were down for a day which left some people unsure of what to do without it. Even though it wasn’t working, we all still reached for our phones, thinking we could check in or post something. During that day, some of us took the time to read a book or get other work done, embracing a “social-media free” day. But it got us thinking, have we become too dependent on social media? In today’s episode, we dive into this topic and share our honest opinions. Social Media is a Tool Don’t get us wrong, we ADORE social media. It’s a great way to stay connected with others and to share what is going on in your life. It’s also an AMAZING resource for your business. But social media is a tool, it should not consume your entire life. It’s easy to become distracted by it but it can start being dangerous if you think you should live your life a certain way based on what you see online. If you see the people you follow online and think they have the “perfect life” and you don’t, it’s normal to get discouraged. It’s important to not use social media as a mirror for your own life. You need to do what’s best for yourself and not feel like you have to do what everyone else is doing. You are special and unique and your story deserves to be told. Learning to be Present Again There is a time and place for everything, including social media. Have you ever gone out to dinner with your friends to share great conversations and catch up with each other and instead you both spend more time on your phones? Don’t get me wrong, we all love documenting the moments, our experiences, and our travels, but then it’s time to put the phone away and actually be present with the people we’re with. It’s okay to share with your friends that you want a photo of your night out together but you don’t have to post it right away. No one cares if it’s posted right at that very second. Just be honest and open with your friends and set aside time for your social media so it’s not taking up the entire evening. When you’re actually in the moment, you’ll have way more fun. Your Business Should Survive Without Social Media Would your business survive if social media went away? The answer is probably no and it’s a good thing that you know that now. Of course, social media isn’t going anywhere but it’s important to find other ways to promote your business. Try starting an email newsletter or a blog. Both those types of platforms you can control and you are not sharing on someone else’s platform. Find ways that your business can thrive, even if social media disappears. About This Month’s Book There’s never been a better time to start your own business. But let’s face it: It can be scary to put yourself out there and tackle the business side of things. Fortunately, you’re not alone! There is a movement of women stepping into their God-given gifts to make money doing what they love. If you’d like to join them, this is your handbook that will take the ideas in your head and the dream in your heart and turn them into action. In Business Boutique, Christy Wright will: Help you create a step-by-step, customized plan to start and grow your business. Show you how to manage your time so you can have a business—and life—that you love. Explain overwhelming business stuff like pricing, taxes, and budgeting in simple terms. Teach you how to use marketing to reach the right people in the right way. Empower you to sell your product or service with confidence. Christy will help you get your business idea off the ground or take your existing business to the next level. You can do this. It’s time for you to make money doing what you love! Source Sarah’s Takeaway: I am in awe of Christy's ability in story telling and how she uses her own background as the daughter of an entreprenuer and her own passion for helping women to share the steps to laying down a foundation to succeed as a business owner. She easily defines the steps and actions to take, and is a cheerleader for you as you go thorough the pages of the book. Probably most beneficial, she lets you know you are NOT alone and your voice and approach matters. Shaunae’s Takeaway: I absolutely adore Christy and her passion for helping women succeed in their businesses! This book is a great source to get your business started, the correct way. She talks about building a business in four tiers, like a wedding cake (because her mom is a baker.) She works through the foundation (the base) and moves her way up. I love that she gives action steps at the end of each chapter so you can apply what you’re learning to your own business. This book is definitely a must-read for anyone who is starting their business! Favorite Quotes: “You were made for more than just getting by; fulfillment is waiting for you in work that you love. You’re not a supporting character in the movie of your life; you’re the lead role. You have permission, the responsibility even, to be in the driver’s seat of your own life. That includes investing in things that bring you joy and make you proud. You have permission to do things that make you like yourself. It’s not selfish; it’s self-preservation, and it’s smart.” “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.” “Stop anticipating the sacrifice and start anticipating the reward” “We undervalue our strengths because they may seem easy and obvious to us.” “The prettiest ads don’t win the campaign. The best research wins the campaign.” lessons about marketing “A brand is no longer what we tell the customer it is - it is what the customers tell each other it is.” “Because here is the reality: It’s your responsibility to make yourself feel good. It’s your responsibility to make yourself happy, confident, and proud. It’s your responsibility to make yourself a person that your family wants to be around, a woman that your husband wants to take on a date, a mom that your kids want to play with, and a friend that people want to hang out with. No one can do that for you.” Get your copy of Business Boutique! We both absolutely love having opportunities to travel and explore. Have you ever considered what it would look like to pack up your life and your business and travel the world while working? This has been something that has been on Sarah's heart for awhile now and she is finally taking the leap to make it a reality (at least for four months). Don't worry, we aren't going anywhere - our podcast is just becoming international! How is Sarah Doing This? While you certainly can work and travel at your own leisure, working in coffee shops and staying in hostels or Airbnbs what really made this possible was hearing about a program called Remote Year. This program offers both 4 month and 12 month itineraries, where those who are able to work or run their own business from anywhere can join to experience and live in a new country each month. A Bit More About Remote Year Remote Year is not a company that pays you to work for them. You do need to have your own job while you are on the trip to pay for the program. The benefits of a program like Remote Year really is peace of mind that your housing, a place to work with reliable internet and travel between locations each month are covered. You also are traveling with people who you will get to know and have resources and questions answered from Remote Year employees that live in each country. Remote Year also offers additional program to explore and experience life in each country you visit. Preparing for Becoming a Digital Nomad Your life will literally be in a suitcase, or two! Traveling for extended periods of time while working is best done when traveling light. Consider a capsule wardrobe that you can have the variety you desire, and layers will be your friend in cooler weather. Compression bags and travel cubes are also very helpful for packing within your suitcases. But you definately will not want to carry around to much, so really think about the essentials for your business and what you absolutely need to take with you versus what you can buy along the way. Of course packing is only one thing to consider. You will also want to figure out how you are contacting your clients. If you make a lot of calls or send texts you will want a phone plan that is not going to end up costing you an insanely high amount. You will also most likely be using a credit card as you travel to pay for your expenses, but some cards will charge high international fees. Research a card that will work for you well and not have a fee when abroad. A Few Other Things to Consider: Do you need a visa? Should you purchase travel insurance? What shots or other medical supplies will you need? Other countries will expose you to different health risks if you are spending a longer time there. This week we are talking all about collaboration. More specifically, collaborating with brands. We are so grateful to sit down with Meredith Staggers, who is a Collaboration Queen - seriously she does a fantastic job -and has been fortunate to work with many brands for a living. See a full list of her collaborations here . About Meredith Meredith Timms Staggers, is a blogger, photo stylist and the founder of Cake & Confetti. After working in the marketing and event planning industry for three years, she decided to launch Cake & Confetti (named after two of my party must-haves!). Since 2013, She has seen the business evolve from party planning to a multi-faceted styling boutique + blog! She is fortunate to collaborate with amazing brands for a living, and believes in celebrating life's little moments whether it's with a glass of bubbly or a slice of cake! Meredith Trippled Her Business in 2018 She credits part of this growth to sharing authentically with her audience more about herself and her life in her Instagram feed instead of just her stories. "People were able to get to know the person instead of just photos of cute desserts." She tells us, "pick a few things that you love and are aside form what you're paid to do...and share those". "People want the real," not just the perfect flat-lay. She also put herself out there more with other bloggers for collaboration. How Do You Reach Brands to Collaborate With? You can reach out to the brand itself and pitch a collaboration, but you are subject to the contact form landing with a random person. Meredith suggest finding networks and influencer groups that post collaboration projects with brands that you can apply for. You pitch ideas to the brand for them, and if they feel you are a good fit they will reach out. Meredith says she may receive one for every fifteen she applies for. But she has also found work through a brand manager that would pitch her or through a hashtag like #HoustonBlogger that look for bloggers in a certain market. Choosing the Right Brands to Collaborate With? Partner with brands that fit in your life, things you have actually tried. "I've got to stay true to my brand, and yes, sometimes that means passing up thousands of dollars. But if I lose the trust of the people that follow me, I have nothing." Your audience can tell when something is not authentic, "there is a certain way you talk about things if you really care about them." Planning Out the Collaboration Project and Schedule Brands will typically provide a deadline of when something needs to be live. Meredith likes to work backwards to make sure she has the time and space to complete the project and post. The concept idea itself, which has typically already been pitched and approved, drives what she does. Her goal is to always bulk shoot when she can, and she will a week before make sure she has everything she needs for the shoot, whether it is something she already has or needs to be ordered. Meredith likes to keep the number of posts that are sponsored limited to two per week so that the other two can be more personal or organic - party planning, Piper (her daughter) photos, things she has been loving - to keep it more well rounded. Most of her sponsored posts have shifted to Instagram, allowing her the freedom on her blog. Aspiring Blogger? "Just start... you never know unless you try. And it's not going to be an overnight thing." Meredith started in 2013, and it took time to get to the point where she could hire an assistant to help out. So you don't want to become an influencer to just make money, because there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes. Have another reason, "figure out what makes you unique and share about that." If you put out good content that you are proud of the opportunities will come. If you’ve been struggling with starting a blog or getting back to the blog you haven’t touched for a while, this episode is totally for you. Shaunae is absolutely obsessed with blogging and has been building her blog for the past eight years. Today, she shares some of her favorite tips on how to get started and words of encouragement if you are struggling with what to say. The Benefits of Blogging – Online Portfolio: It’s another place you live on the internet. The more places you are, the more you’ll get picked up on Google and the more chances clients have to find you. – Create the Illusion of Busy: This is your opportunity to show how “in demand” you are. The more you blog, the more it looks like you have a lot going on. – Makes You a Better Writer: The more you blog, the more your writing will improve in all areas. – It Shows Your Personal Side: It lets your clients get to know you. It allows them to fall in love with your brand. – Boosts Your SEO: The more you share, the more active your website looks. This allows you to come up higher in all search engines. When To Share Personal Information on Your Blog There is no right or wrong, you can decide to share as much or as little as you want on your blog and social media. Shaunae chooses to share everything on one blog because she wants her clients and followers to really get to know her. But she doesn’t share absolutely everything. She shares a very curated version of her personal life. She’ll never share negative thoughts unless she’s using her experience as a way to uplift others. A great way to think about it is: if your boss or your mom sees your post, would you be okay with it? Struggling With Creating Content, Remember Your Blog Should: – Educate: Help your readers learn about the field you’re in. – Showcase your new work: It’s a great chance to share without having to update your website all the time. – Inspire: Take the chance to inspire someone new. – Share Your Personal Side: Let everyone know a little more about you and/or your business. – Motivate: Get your readers up and moving! 62 topic ideas so you never run out of things to write about from Sean McCabe How to Manage Your Time to Blog Create a content calendar for your blogging. At the beginning of each month, lay out what you want to talk about and what days you will be posting your new blog posts. Make a commitment to yourself on how much you want to post a week. Money is one of the biggest things people hate talking about - making it, managing it, and everything that comes in between. We know we need it and we know we should manage it well. Even as small business owners it’s hard to know what to charge yourself at, how to discuss money with clients, and even how we deal with money in general. We love talking about our purpose for our business but get totally anxious when discussing the actual finances of it. Today’s episode is for everyone who struggles with talking about finances and money. We are joined by financial and business consultant, Shanna Skidmore, as she shares everything we need to know when it comes to money and happiness. About Shanna Just a numbers girl living in a creative world. Shanna is here to help you make money doing what you love! As a Former Fortune 100 financial advisor turned business consultant for creative entrepreneurs, she’s on a mission to bridge the gap between the world of money and creative entrepreneurship so you can feel confident in your finances, clarity in your direction, and freedom to go on creating just as long as your heart desires! The Biggest Finance Advice to Small Business Owners Keep your business account separate. No matter how much you’re making, it’s important to keep everything in one place. Hire a bookkeeper. A bookkeeper is a person whose job is to keep records of the financial affairs of a business. By keeping a record, you’re able to see where your business is at all times so there is no guesswork.Track your time. When you track all your time on a certain project, you can start determining the value of everything you’re doing. You can then work backwards and learn what you need to price yourself or your services at. Shanna recommends using Toggl to track your time. The Four Money Mindsets These money personalities are how you feel about money to your core. Once you recognize your feelings with it, you can start making decisions and affects your actions based around that. Spender - spending money makes them feel secure, gives lavish gifts, spend for approval or love, believe that more money is the solution to the problem Saver - love security, they feel like no amount of money is enough money, they are afraid the money will go away, have a hard time of letting go, they need to learn it’s okay to spend money Avoider - doesn’t “do” numbers, doesn’t want to know what the numbers actually are, they experience a lack of confidence, they’ll price lower, lack of interest Martyr - believes the desire for money is evil so they give it all away, they sacrifice themselves, they give discounts, they have a hard time sticking to price, they don’t hold on money for themselves** Looking for clarity in your business? If you've ever felt like a fraud, second guessed if your work or something you had to share was good enough to be seen and heard or that you even know enough to be teaching something you've probably felt the effects of Imposter Syndrome. It's a real thing, and in this week's episode we are talking about what exactly Imposter Syndrome is, how it can really affect our businesses and life and some thoughts on how to push past to let your voice be heard and to serve others. The Definition of Imposter Syndrome Imposter Syndrome can be defined as "a psychological pattern in which an individual doubts their accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a 'fraud'" ( Langford and Clance ) Types of Imposter Syndrome Perfectionist - sets high expectations for themselves, if they don't all them they feel like a failure Expert - they need to know every piece of information, they are all trying to improve Natural Genius - when things usually come easy for them and now they are struggling with something Soloist - they feel like they have to accomplish everything on their own, they feel like a failure when they have to ask for help Superwoman/man - push themselves to work harder to prove themselves, they need to succeed in all aspects of life at all times Source for Types of Imposter Syndrome When We Start Something New Our Little Me Likes To Keep Us In Our Comfort Zone While Imposter Syndrome can creep up at any point while we are creating, doing , teaching or sharing, for us we have found it to be most present when we are beginning something new. Maybe we are taking on a new service, sharing something for the first time on social media or even taking on a life event for the first time like being a future mom. Whatever it may be, when we are first experiencing it ourselves, we won't feel as confident in sharing it with others because it is new to us as well. But as we remembered from reading January's book club read, Believe Bigger by Marshawn Evans Daniels, the feeling of fraud that creeps up in these moments is really your Little Me trying to keep you in your comfort zone, and that keeps you from reaching your greater potential. Imposter Syndrome Keeps You From Serving Others Too Think about it, by not sharing, what is someone missing out on hearing and learning from? The thought that we don't have anything to be said that hasn't already been said by someone else can keep someone from being served by you. We all have our own unique voice and ways about sharing something, and that may just be what a person who follows you needs. When you start to wonder if what you have to say is good enough to share or if people would even want to hear it, think about that. Who are you missing out on serving? Who are you missing out on connecting with? Shaunae shares how she created a post on Instagram sharing how she feels like a fraud almost every day and was blown away by the response it got and how many people it resonated with. We aren't alone in our struggles. Often our struggles are what can help connect us. If we share what we know and document our journey, really being authentic with our audience, they will be able to resonate with it. Imposter Syndrome is bound to creep up again, especially in new phases of life. But give yourself permission to be where you are at, wherever that is. Know that you are valuable, worthy and have something to share. We all know it’s important to get your work published, but how do we actually make it happen? What benefits are there to seeing your work featured in publications? On today’s episode, we’re joined by Meghan Stolar Brown, director of Two Bright Lights and How They Asked, as she leads us through the wonderful world of publishing. She is sharing what editors are looking for, what to avoid when submitting your work to get published, and how Two Bright Lights can help you streamline the process. The Importance of Getting Your Work Published Getting your work published adds to your client experience. For example, you can wow your couples by getting their wedding featured in a magazine or blog. They will be super excited to see and share with their friends. It gets your work in front of potential clients too. It serves as an unbiased reference for your work. The editor is vouching for all the work behind it. Another bonus to getting your work published are the SEO benefits. The more backlinks you have in other websites, the higher your ranking becomes! What Editors Look For When you are crafting a submission, editors are looking for a lot of details. They want details in things they can write about. Publishers need to be able to write about it. Using the wedding photography example again, submit 70% details and 30% with people. This helps tell the story of the day. They want to be able to inspire their readers and by showing a story, they can! You also need to include all the people that helped on the event or the wedding. You need to give credit where credit is due. What Happens When Your Work is Rejected for a Publication You might not know the reason why your work wasn’t accepted. Sometimes it has nothing to do with your talent and everything to do with what the editor is looking for during that time. Make sure you research publications before you submit anything to them. Make sure your style fits with their style. If your work is rejected, find another publication. There is a publication for everyone, so don’t get discouraged. You’ll find the perfect fit for you and your work. About Meghan Meghan Stolar Brown, Director of Two Bright Lights and How They Asked, is passionate about creating a platform to help event professionals grow their brand and leads by connecting with publishers and other vendors. She has extensive marketing and event management experience and understands the challenges and opportunities creative entrepreneurs face. Growing up with a booking agent and a wedding band leader for parents, there is no doubt that marketing and events are in Meghan’s DNA. Her love for music and events grew from singing and playing piano as a toddler, to performing in recording studios and at weddings and events in the years since. Meghan holds a degree in Music Business from New York University, and lives in New York with her husband and (if everything goes her way) their future dog, “Chet”. We are all looking to discover what our true purpose in life is. We are constantly searching for our “calling.” Our Book of the Month for January, dives into just that. This month we read Believe Bigger: Discover the Path to Your Life Purpose by Marshawn Evans Daniels. In the book, Marshawn dives into what she calls a “Purpose Map”, the path into finding your calling. She shares her own story, along with giving the reader tips and exercises to walk through their own “Purpose Map.” We met Marshawn at the Abound Conference put on by the author of the first book we discussed for our Creative Legacy Podcast book club, Karen Stott. We loved that conference and the speakers, but we were blown away by Marshawn and her talk on this Purpose Map. We knew we had to buy the book to dig even deeper! We were not disappointed either! There are so many takeaways and quotes we loved. Plus Marshawn gives you the space to really dig deep and see where you are at and where you are heading in finding your purpose Sarah’s Takeaway It's hard to choose one takeaway, because Marshawn really made me think! I love that this book allows the space to do just that though. There are many spots where she tells you to stop, take a breath and to think about a prompt she gives that help you define how your life experiences, your talents, and gifts can allow you to move into your purpose. I walked away knowing myself, and feeling more confident than ever that I can step into the next stage of my purpose. Shaunae’s Takeaway I’m obsessed with this book and Marshawn. This book is FULL of incredible information that will help you discover your purpose, no matter where you are at in life. My favorite part though has to be when she gets to the Influence stage. It helped me realize that I can start impacting others right now. I don’t have to get to a certain level, I can start helping right where I’m at. I also loved that she challenges us to just start doing. Your calling isn’t something that’s told to you. It comes when you go out into the world and start experimenting. Meaningful Quotes: “Chaos is often God’s way of inviting us to step into our calling” “God loves us too much to leave us or lose us, so instead he splits us so that true significance can flow from within us” “If you allow yourself to settle for less, no one is obligated to stop you” “Having fun is important, because finding your calling starts with committing to joy.” “You don’t find your calling on the sidelines. You find it once you’re in it. It’s not something to be explained. It’s something to be explored. Destiny is not an intellectual exercise. It’s experimental.” “God has called every woman to lead. A life of influence and impact is the very center of feminine purpose.” Find The Creative Legacy Podcast Online • Website • Instagram • Facebook • The Creative Legacy Podcast Group Find Sarah Online • Website • Instagram • Facebook • YouTube Find Shaunae Online: • Website • Instagram • Facebook…

We’ve discussed how to set goals and how to complete them, but sometimes we as business owners still struggle with moving forward. Why? Because we’re not organized. In our business, in our personal life, even in our space - if we don’t get a handle on organizing the things around us, life feels off balance. In today’s episode, we’re discussing why it’s important to keep your space, your time, and your life organized. Organizing Your Space Do you make your bed everyday? Is your desk tidy? Are papers left everywhere or put away? It’s important to keep your space tidy and organized. When your space is organized, your brain feels calm and ready to take on the day. But if you live in mess and chaos, it’s hard for your brain to concentrate on the task at hand. Make sure you are taking time each day to organize your space. If you need help, check out Marie Kondo’s new show on Netflix, Tidying Up. We’re both obsessed with it! Tools For Organization There are so many amazing items and apps to get you started on your organizational journey. We love using whiteboard calendars to map out our month and our priorities (we both have this one from Michaels.) We also use planners and journals to keep us focused. Making lists and color coding your biggest priorities is super helpful too. Organizing Your Time One of the hardest things to organize is your time. You get the same hours everyday, so how do you make it work for you? Block scheduling is a great way to map out how your time is being spent. Plan out your tasks each hour so you know exactly what you’re working on. Say “no” to things you don’t have the time for. You’ll burnout if you take on too much and by figuring out how your time is being spent, you can avoid it! We are so excited to be joined by Chelsea B. Foster for this episode on creating intentional inquiry processes for the introverted-extrovert. If you are wondering who that is, it is someone who has both introverted and extroverted traits, so they fall somewhere in the middle of the spectrum between introvert and extrovert. Workflows are especially important for the introvert because having workflows takes the guess work out of the process and it allows the introvert to communicate a lot clearer. But if you are an introvert OR extrovert, there is plenty in this episode that you can take away as well! Workflows are not set in stone When we create a workflow, it is not set in stone. They are meant to change and grow with us as our business changes. And that is okay! We also get to recognize that there is likely going to be a messy middle. Chelsea gives the example of cleaning out your refrigerator. You are likely going to take everything out and have a mess before you go through it and put into place what is good and actually needs to be there. "In order to make something organized, it has to get messy." When we are first creating a workflow, WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN! You will be surprised to see for many things you actually already have a work flow in place, you just didn't know it. But be intentional with every step and simplify as much as possible - people don't want to jump through hoops. Find where your energy is Both Sarah and Shaunae wake up early to get a start on their days and get things done. But that isn't how it is for everyone. Chelsea doesn't start work until noon, after she has used her morning to recharge herself and make sure that she is in a good place to give all that energy to her clients. You can also look at interactions with people and how that affects your energy. If being around and talking to people really drains you, set boundaries and limit the number of days or times you are having those interactions. And also set time to recover. Chelsea knows that the day after a Rising Tide Society meeting she needs to take a day with nothing on her calendar to recuperate. Anticipate We also have the opportunity to anticipate what our clients are going to be asking. If we know that an inquiry is going to want to know our pricing, part of our process can be to create an auto responder that provides that information or a canned email (prepared email template) that we can copy and paste to easily respond. It's kind of magical when you can answer a question for a client before they even have a chance to ask. In setting up automation you can also give your client something to do or get excited about while they wait for your response. Give yourself a buffer As you work more in your business you will start to understand how long something will probably take you. Perhaps you only respond to emails during certain times, so you can communicate with your client that you will respond within 24 hours during those times. But give yourself a buffer. If you might need more time, say 48 hours. "Clients are way more excited when you send something early then when you have to tell them 'Oh, I don't have it done yet'". About Chelsea B. Foster Chelsea B Foster is a workflow and productivity specialist, educator, coach, wife, dog-mom and traveler. She also hosts the Burnout-Proof Your Biz Podcast every week. Chelsea provides a unique perspective to the entrepreneurial world by advocating for “no one right solution for all businesses.” Every business is unique, so the way they run and the tools they use should also be unique. She has helped transform the businesses and lives of overwhelmed and exhausted small creative business owners by guiding them in creating organized, specific workflows that are not only simple but easy to use and by assisting them in selecting tools that work for their business and their personal learning and organizational style. This has allowed them to become the expert so they run their businesses and live their dream lives on their own terms. With an emphasis on building relationships and face-to-face interactions, Chelsea is able to connect with her clients on a deep level. She supports women who are so over feeling lost and near burnout all the time and are ready to finally start living their dream life through private coaching, done-for-you setups, workshops, and a membership group (The Empowered Boss Lab). 2019 is finally year! We love beginning a new year because it feels so full of possibilities! Opportunities are endless and it feels like you can do anything. You set goals and make big plans for the next twelve months. But what happens when it gets to March and you feel stuck? Maybe you haven’t achieved your goals yet or maybe you haven’t even started. On today’s episode, we’re giving you some of our favorite tips to help you stick to the goals you set this coming year. Our Goals for 2019 Sarah’s Goals: This year my theme is to be bold and share openly. I want to take more bold actions that create new experiences, greater results and a love and joy of life. I also want to be more open to sharing what I know and building relationships with others. A few of my goals for this are to travel more in 2019, including finally traveling outside of the country!! I also will be starting projects that have been in my mind but have not yet been started, like my new YouTube channel . I will also be making more of an effort to love myself and not let negative thoughts creep into my mind. Instead when I do have that type of thought, I want to flip it around into something positive. Shaunae’s Goals: My word of the year is Abundance. Even if nothing changes, I want to see my life thriving and full, not just surviving or stuck. I have plans to work on some awesome new projects and launch programs/courses I never have before. Matt and I have plans to tidy up our house (thanks Marie Kondo!) , to create new things, and to get everything in order before we get married. 2019 will be full of a lot of work and a lot of fun! Creating A Plan & Setting Smaller Goals Before you can go out and crush your goals, you have to figure out how you’ll do that. Writing out a plan is the best place to start. Listing out steps or creating a calendar of when you want to achieve it by is so important. Set smaller goals that are achievable too, so you can celebrate the wins along the way to your bigger goals. Tracking & Accountability Whether you keep yourself accountable or you have a group of friends that you can talk to, accountability helps you stay on track with your goals. Every day, every week, or every month you can write down what you want to get done and cross it off or check-mark it when it’s finished! You can even tell the people closest to you about your goals too so they can help you and encourage you! Keep Your Mind Focused on the Future It’s easy to get discouraged while trying to achieve your goals. Setbacks happen and sometimes it feels hard to keep going. By creating a vision board, you can focus on your future self and your future life. This serves as a reminder of why you set your goals in the first place. It’s your “why” for your goals. When you’re feeling stuck, a vision board helps keep everything in focus. What’s your goals for the new year? It’s our 30th episode and it’s less than a week before Christmas is here! We wanted to kick off the last part of this holiday season by sharing a few of our favorite traditions during this time of year. This mini-episode dives into all the best things like decorating, baking cookies, sending out holiday cards, and finding awesome presents for our loved ones. Sarah’s Favorite Christmas Traditions Christmas Eve in my family is the day we exchange all the gifts. But it's really the wrapping paper that is part of our tradition, as every year without fail someone in my family will start a wrapping paper fight. We crumple up the paper and toss it at our unsuspecting family members, and before you know it everyone is joining in. Christmas Day is more relaxed for me, I'll spend time with my mom and we will typically go to the movie theater to watch a movie, because hey, they are open on Christmas Day! But even before Christmas it's part of my tradition to set up the Christmas tree and all the decorations the day after Christmas. The tree can sometimes be a bit of a process, but I have fun creating something new with it every year. I also love to bake cookies while singing Christmas carols and watch Christmas movies - Hallmark channel is usually always on during December. I love the feeling that Christmas gives and all the lights, it is just a very magical time of the year. Shaunae’s Favorite Christmas Traditions For me, it’s all about the decorating. The day after Thanksgiving it’s down into the basement to pull out all the holiday decor. That entire weekend is dedicated to making our home feel festive and cozy. I get pretty serious about gift giving too. I work on my list all year and love to surprise my family members, friends, and clients with something special. We even send out Christmas cards to everyone too! This is truly my favorite time of year and I couldn’t just pick one favorite tradition. I really enjoy it all, even those cheesy Hallmark movies. I cannot get enough! Side note: We’ll be taking the next two weeks off to rest, recharge, and plan some awesome new content for 2019! Our next new episode will be live on Wednesday, January 9, 2019. With 2018 coming to an end, you’re probably starting to think about 2019. It’s only a few weeks away and soon you’ll be setting resolutions and goals to achieve for the next 365. Today’s episode, we are challenging you to look a little deeper at goals. They aren’t just an end of year tradition that you make then forget about two months later. They can teach you so much about yourself, push you to greater heights, and help make your dreams a reality. Why We Set Goals Before we think about what goals we want to set, it’s important to think about why we set them. It’s a chance for us to focus on where we want our lives to go. It’s an opportunity to evaluate our lives and find ways to make them better. Goals create a friendly competition with our past selves and our future selves. Goals help us improve who we are and how we positively affect the world. When to Set Goals You don’t have to wait for New Year’s to set new goals for yourself. The sky's the limit! We like to set goals quarterly and monthly too. Shaunae likes using her birthday as a chance to reflect on past wins and new thoughts for the future. You can set goals whenever fits best for you. Steps on How to Set Your Goals When setting goals, we like to start out with a vision for our ideal future. What does it look like? Creating a mood or inspiration board is a great place to figure out what your goals should be. Once you know what you want your future to look like to can start create bigger goals on how to get there. Then you take that big goal and break it down even more, into smaller mini goals. We love the idea of setting SMART goals. A SMART goal is a short statement that a person makes to lead them in the direction of what they want to accomplish. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. When you set a SMART goal, you’ve truly thought your entire goal through and are more likely to achieve it! Do What is Best for You There is no right or wrong goal. There is no ideal time to start goals. Figure out what you want out of life and what works best for you. If you are serious about something, setting a goal is a great way to get to where you want to be. But don’t beat yourself up if you aren’t there yet. Celebrate your wins along the way, that’s the most important part. 1 Steal Like an Artist & Show Your Work by Austin Kleon - November Book Club 36:36

Our November book club books - that's right! Plural - were recommended by Sarah. She first heard about them from Charli Marie TV , a designer she follows on YouTube who shares the books with all her creative friends as gifts. These two books are full of information and advice for creatives while being fun and quick to read. The many large text and graphics, small square size and many quotes make it an easy read for anyone. Steal Like an Artist No...it doesn't mean literally stealing! The idea of stealing like an artist is that we are always taking in inspiration from the things around us and using those elements to create new work. In a sense, no idea is ever new, rather it is an adaptation or an inspiration of something that already exists. For example, when Sarah creates a design she might find a color pallet she likes in one piece, a font from another, a style in a third and is able to use those three inspirations to create her design. We love that it takes the pressure off of artists and creatives that we have to create something new and original. When we realize we are not going to reinvent the wheel and something crazy and unheard of we can do what we love and do it well, taking inspiration from what we love. It's interesting that the book is almost a representation of stealing like an artist. Kleon uses quotes throughout the book to help support his ideas. He gives credit of course. which brings up the point that there is no shortage of appreciation for credit given where credit is due. Be generous and over-credit or honor people that inspire you. But chapter 6 is a pre-cursor to the second book... Show Your Work Kleon's second book is all about overcoming the fear of putting your work out into the world for others to see, whether that fear is that someone may steal it or that it won't be well received. Be true to you, do your work and be willing to put it out for others who may enjoy it. Of course, don't overshare! Shaunae gives an example of how she decides what is okay to put out - will her parents read it, or an ex-boyfriend, and is it something they should see? If not, then it doesn't get posted. But showing up to share your work consistently is what will help you be noticed for what you are putting out. If you only share work from time to time, people will forget about it. It is also important to have your own little space on the internet! It has been brought up by many influencers, what happens when your social media account disappears? How do you reach your audience. Having your own website to document your work gives you that much more of an opportunity to be present. It is also truly a documentation of you work, especially if you blog. We love trying to find ways to make the people in our lives feel special. This is true even with our clients and customers. One of our favorite ways to show everyone we care is through gift-giving. Whether it’s a gift to say thank you, a gift to surprise, or a gift during the holiday season - it’s the easiest way to bring a smile to someone’s face. On today’s episode, we discuss gift giving year round and during the holiday season for our clients and how easy it is to incorporate it into your workflow. Why Gifting Matters Gifting is taking that extra step to show kindness and generosity. When gifting to your clients, you let them know they are more than just another number. They matter. Give thoughtfully and listen to what your client might enjoy. It not only makes them feel amazing but it’s more likely to lead them to refer you to other people. Gifting is a win-win! Yearly Gift Ideas You don’t have to break the bank to be a thoughtful gifter. Even a sweet thank you card can make a world of difference. Think about what you think your clients would like. It can be homemade or even store bought. But it’s the thought that counts. Make sure your gifts stay on brand with your message. If you are mailing or delivering a gift to their home, try to collect their address during the contract stage so you have it on file. You can also send gifts via email, like electronic Starbucks gift cards! Holiday Gift Ideas The holidays are the perfect time to remind past clients that you are thinking of them. Whether you worked with them at the beginning of the year or just last week, wish them a happy holiday season. This can be with a sweet holiday related gift (we love giving out sweets or spa-like items so they can relax) or it can be as simple as sending them a holiday card. We also highly recommend Greetabl - a customizable box with a message, photos, and surprise that ships right to your client’s door! The possibilities are endless! Greetabl Discount - Use code SHAUNAE for 20% off of $50 or more! Happy (almost) Thanksgiving! This time of year is so special because it’s a time for all of us to reflect on the blessings in our lives. We should give thanks every day for what we have. Thanksgiving is the perfect day to start a gratitude journal or to be more mindful of how lucky we are. In today’s mini episode, we are sharing what we’re thankful for. We’re Thankful for You! We first want to give a big thank you to all of our amazing listeners! Without you, this podcast would be nothing. We are so grateful that you tune in every week, take part in our discussions, and share your awesome ideas with us. Thank you for believing in us! We are forever thankful! Sarah’s Thankful For: I couldn't possibly list everything I am grateful for. I love keeping a gratitude journal and reflecting on something I am grateful for each day like making a trip to Starbucks and running into a familiar face or a friend who made me smile when I was having a rough day. Reflecting on this year, I can also be thankful for my family, friends, and clients who have supported and loved me in each journey I've taken. I am also thankful for the opportunity to travel more. Travel is not something I was able to do much of growing up, so to be able to explore more and take part in conferences that bring me to new places is really important to me. Shaunae’s Thankful For: Of course, my friends and family. I know it’s what everyone starts with but it’s the most important. The older I get, the more I realize just how lucky I am to have amazing friends and family members. I’m so thankful for my fiancé, Matt. He’s the best partner I could have ever asked for. We are also so lucky to have three adorable black cats that we love so much! I’m grateful for my career and the incredible people I get to meet. And of course, I’m so thankful for all the millions of little gifts I receive every day. Gifts like my health, sunshine, a beautiful home, good books, laughter, soft blankets, La Croix Water, and so much more. I feel so lucky. 50 Things You Can Be Thankful For Today Find The Creative Legacy Podcast Online • Website • Instagram • Facebook • The Creative Legacy Podcast Group Find Sarah Online • Website • Instagram • Facebook Find Shaunae Online: • Website • Instagram • Facebook…

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! It’s the beginning of the holiday season. So why does it sometimes feel like the most stressful time of the year? Why do the holidays sometimes feel like a second job? In today’s episode, we’re giving you tips and tricks to make this season as stress-free as possible. Because everyone deserves to enjoy this time of the year! Make a List… And Check It Twice Staying organized and making lists will help everything run more smoothly. You can make a list for just about anything. What gifts to buy, what holiday events do you have planned, what do you have to bake - write it all down! The more you write down and keep organized, the easier everything will flow. Know Your Boundaries It’s okay to say “no” during the holidays too. You don’t HAVE to buy gifts for every single person you know. You don’t have to sign up for all the extra projects like chaperoning a Christmas field trip or making custom “Pinterest-perfect” presents for all your children’s teachers. You aren’t a Grinch if you can’t fit everything in. Know your limits then put your boundaries in place. You don’t have to do it all. Delegate Tasks Others can help you during this time of the year. Your significant other, your children, the rest of your family - they can all lend a helping hand. Yes, it might not be as perfect as how you would do it but at least it’s done. And done is better than nothing. The holidays don’t have to fall on your shoulders, share the love. Enjoy The Season We talk a lot about joy this time of year, but it’s rare we actually take a moment to appreciate it. Between the holiday parties, baking, cleaning, and buying presents, we become more and more stressed. It’s okay to put everything aside and just ENJOY this time. It’s your holiday too! Your kids, your spouse, your family, your friends care way more if you are present with them than they care about anything else. So take a step back and seize the season! You deserve it! Our book of the month for October is Priya Parker’s The Art of Gathering. Parker argues that the gatherings in our lives are lackluster and unproductive and they don't have to be. We rely too much on routine and the conventions of gatherings when we should focus on distinctiveness and the people involved. Drawing on her expertise as a facilitator of high-powered gatherings around the world, Parker takes us inside events of all kinds to show what works, what doesn't, and why. It All Starts With Purpose We’ve talked about our “why” and our purpose with our businesses, but it’s so important to think about our purpose in all that we do. Even in your gatherings and events, Parker pushes us to think about our intentions of why we are gathering. She invites us to dig past the surface level of reasons like “I’m celebrating a birthday” or “I want our employees to have Christmas party” to really find out the true meaning of bringing people together. A Beginning, Middle, and End Parker discusses how every event is like a speech; it has a striking beginning, an interesting middle, and a solid and strong close. She goes into each part and shares her tips for each one, like how you never start or end with the logistics at a party. What it really got us thinking about was that we never really end a party, event, or gathering. We start looking around and see if guests are getting tired or antsy and just start ushering people to the door. But great events actually do everything well, from before guests even arrive to the end when they leave and re-enter the world. Our Takeaway We loved learning about better ways we can host gatherings. In the book, Parker discusses multiple gatherings, from conferences, meetings to a flash-mob party, an Arab-Israeli summer camp and everything in between. Her examples helped us find new and fun things we can incorporate in our next events. If you are looking to become a great host and gather out of love and purpose, then this book is definitely for you! BOO! It’s officially Halloween and we are celebrating in style! On today’s mini episode, we are sharing our favorite Halloween traditions, Halloween candy we love, and our all time favorite costumes. It’s the spookiest time of year and we are excited to share it with you! Shaunae’s Favorite Halloween Traditions I have always loved trick or treating when I was younger. I still think they should let adults trick or treat too. The older I get the more I love just getting cozy and watching classic Halloween movies like Hocus Pocus and The Addams Family. But no matter how old I get, I will always love creating fun costumes and dressing up! Sarah’s Favorite Halloween Traditions I enjoy my memories of Halloween trick-or-treating when I was younger and then watching Halloween movies while eating a few pieces of the candy I had worked for. It's not October or Halloween without a Halloweentown movie marathon, and of course Hocus Pocus is a must too! But my favorite memories are dressing up and spending the evening with friends. Past Halloween Costumes - Shaunae I’m always looking for something different when dressing up. I’ve been like that since I was little. As a kid, I dressed up as a snowy white owl, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a reporter, and (of course) a cat! Now as an adult, I’m still working on keeping my costumes crafty and creative. I’ve been a mermaid, a piñata, a crazy cat lady, Garth from Wayne’s World, Rose from Titanic, and (my favorite) David S. Pumpkins! Past Halloween Costumes - Sarah Dressing up now is not as much my thing, but a few of my favorite costumes have been a cat, a genie and I still find my first Halloween costume (even though I don't remember it!) to be fun - a jack-o-lantern! Thanks to my momma for being crafty on that one! We had the opportunity to chat with Kay Fabella, an LA native, about how her love of Madrid, Spain led her to living there full time and beginning her entrepreneurial journey there. She tells us how it came about, the challenges she faced, the differences in culture she learned and how learning another language can open up the door to more opportunities for your business even if you live in the U.S. The keys for working in another culture are to be honest and humble. When you are translating your content into another language that is not your native language you can only share the basics, so you have to be honest. Knowing the basic words of language can also show that you care about them and their culture. Kay shares the Spanish versions of these words for us: Hola (silent h) - Hello Adios or Hasta luego - Good-bye or See you later Gracias - Thank you Más vino por favor - More wine please Don't be afraid to takes risks and be bold. Kay took the chance to talk with someone she admired about what she does, and since at the time storytelling was not well known in Spain, she had the opportunity to write a series of articles as a guest blogger on the topic - you guys, this crashed her website because so many people were interested! It just takes that one chance or moment to move past fear and take action. About Kay Fabella Kay Fabella is a storyteller and brand strategist, who crafts words for entrepreneurs to master their message, pivot their business efficiently, and connect with the people they were meant to serve. A Los Angeles native based in Spain, she's worked with solopreneurs to Fortune 500s in English and Spanish. She has also been featured as an international speaker, writer, and storytelling expert in the Huffington Post and El País. When Kay's not making brand story magic, you can find her with her Spanish husband and their two cats, eating her way through Europe, or jet-setting between LA and Madrid. As many of you know, Shaunae is a professional photographer and Sarah is a graphic designer. We wanted to start a discussion and cover all your topics related to photography and design. Last week, Shaunae answered your photography questions. In today’s episode, Shaunae asks Sarah questions provided by our listeners about all things related to design. How did you get started? I have always loved creating. From a young age I was drawing and crafting, but it took me awhile to realize that it was what I wanted to do for a career. I came across Design Arts in a list of majors offered by the University of Wisconsin system and ended up applying for the major. I really didn't understand exactly what I was getting into, but as soon as I started to learn about the process and begin designing pieces I fell in love with it. What is a brand? What do you need to get one started? The easiest way for me to define a brand is to call it an experience. It is the experience from the moment someone first hears about you, to contacting you, being provided your service and even how they feel afterwards. As a logo designer, I will be honest and say a logo or any of your visuals are not what make your brand. These things are called your brand identity, and they assist your over all experience and help create recognition of your brand. What do non-designers need to know about design? First, be aware that design is not simply about making things look pretty. Yes we do want things to look good. But design is about communication and solving a problem to reach an objective. This could be attending an event, picking up a book off of a shelf, defining your services. There is a process to this in understanding your client and knowing how they will best respond to take that action towards your objective. But in terms of DIY design, don't be afraid of color, you can use a color wheel to help you know which colors pair nicely together. However, just like fonts and images, don't go overboard and put in to many colors or fonts. I preach simplicity in design and it can be one of the hardest things to curate a design back to its simplest elements. You want to make sure that your message is able to come across clearly. As many of you know, Shaunae is a professional photographer and Sarah is a graphic designer. We wanted to start a discussion and cover all your topics related to photography and design. In today’s episode, Sarah asks Shaunae questions provided by our listeners about all things related to photography. How did you get started? I fell in love with photography in high school while I was the editor for my school’s yearbook and newspaper. There was something so fascinating about documenting people. So, I graduated as a junior, packed up our family van, and drove across the country to Massachusetts to attend college for photography. After graduation and traveling the country, I returned home to Wisconsin to start my business. I’ve been running my photography business for almost eight years and have been doing it full-time for four years and I still love it! How do you stand out as a photographer when there are so many? I’m a firm believer in putting on your blinders and going to work on yourself. It doesn’t matter if you think the market is “oversaturated.” I don’t believe it is, there is room for everyone. To stand out, you must perfect your skills and be authentic in who you are and what you offer. I became successful because I worried about my clients instead of worrying about what everyone else is doing. What advice do you have to improve photos taken by people who aren’t photographers? Like business owners trying to showcase their products or services. Always look for your light. Sometimes you can improve your photos just by turning around and seeing that your product looks better at a different angle. Your light is everything, pay attention to it. Don’t settle for what is there. You can switch up your background or clear space if you want things to be less distracting. Advice to new photographers If becoming a professional photographer is truly your dream, don’t let anyone stop you from making it a reality. There will be struggles and uphill climbs but I promise you it’s all worth it in the end. Invest in your photography education, find mentors, and put the work in. You’ll be so thankful you did it the right way instead of taking the “easy” way. We all have things we have been told or thoughts we have developed about ourselves that can end up running our lives, and honestly, many time they are lies we tell ourselves: we aren't worthy, we can't have success, we can't start today... But really you ARE worthy, you CAN have success, and you CAN start today. Breaking down the lies we tell ourselves is what Rachel Hollis digs into in her book Girl, Wash Your Face , which is our September book of the month. Shaunae's favorite chapter, chapter 10: the lie - I should be farther along by now. Quotes: "I believe that you are not a mistake - and feeling guilt about who you are does a disservice to yourself and the Creator who made you. You-the real you-is not an accident.” "Maybe it’s just that you don’t have enough experience yet…maybe that goal wasn’t ever meant to be yours. Maybe you are destined for something so much cooler, which won’t come until five years down the road." Sarah's favorite chapter, chapter 12: the lie - I need to make myself smaller. Quotes: " I was making myself small. I was performing just enough to gain your attention but not truly being myself for fear of what everyone might think of the real me. ” "I realized I was not the only woman making myself small to make others feel comfortable" Our Favorite Quote: "Someone else’s opinion of me is none of my business. Someone else’s opinion of you is none of your business." Have you ever wanted to attend a conference but after you buy a ticket, you have no idea what to do next? As avid conference attendees ourselves, we are the experts on how to plan accordingly for a conference and how to make sure you are getting the most out of your experience. In today’s episode, we’re giving you the steps to guarantee that you have an amazing time no matter what conference you attend! Traveling & Accommodations After purchasing your ticket to your conference, travel is the next big step you must tackle. Are you flying or driving? Where are you staying? Is the conference providing lodging or do you have to find your own? Nail down your travel plans as soon as possible. Research if it makes more sense to stay in a hotel or an Airbnb and decide if you’d like to room with other people going to the conference or if you’d prefer to have a room to yourself. We always recommend that if your conference is taking place in a hotel ballroom or conference center to book a room in that hotel. It makes life SO much easier. Research The Speakers If it’s a conference with multiple speakers and/or breakout sessions, do your homework! You might have bought your ticket because you want to see one speaker but you may discover a new speaker there you love even more. Learn more about the speakers so you can be ready! Also, if your conference has a Facebook group, fan page, or app; make sure to join! You’ll be connected with so many people who are attending and get insider access to the conference. Get the Most Out of a Conference I know it can be scary attending your first conference, especially if you’re alone, but do not worry! You are already surrounded by so many new potential friends. Take notes during the presentations but also take time during the breaks to befriend some of the people around you. Your next best friend might be just a few seats away. Remember the speakers are there to do a job so if you are looking to become besties with a speaker, a conference might not be your best chance. But don’t discredit the other attendees. They are eager to learn and make friends, just like you! Create An Action Plan If the conference was a success, you’ll leave feeling like your brain might explode! That’s a good thing and we definitely recommend resting the day after you get back to bring yourself back to reality. After you are rested, go through what you took away from the conference and make an action plan of what you want to accomplish. It’s so easy to attend a conference, take a bunch of notes only to return home and let that notebook collect dust on the shelf. Make some goals then go out and crush them! Do you ever feel like you have a million things piling up and instead of figuring out a way to handle everything you just want to crawl into your bed and hide? And even though you love your job, all the daily responsibilities just feel like too much? That feeling of being so overwhelmed you would rather just not do anything? That feeling is called burnout and yeah, we’ve felt like that too. What is Burnout? Burnout is physical or mental collapse caused by overwork or stress. And if you own a business or are working towards your creative dreams, you’ve probably already experienced it. Burnout isn’t good for anyone and it’s our goal to make sure you avoid it. Or if you are in it right now, this episode will help you dig yourself out of it! Our Experiences Sarah - I used to find it hard to say no to a lot of things, and truthfully still struggle with this. I was putting everything and everyone before myself, and trying to give 100% to each of those situations. But this easily overwhelmed me and eventually I just wanted to lay in bed and watch Netflix all day because I couldn’t handle it all. It took a long time to come out of because I didn’t know what to do! And while I was trying to figure this out, I was letting my client work and everything I was committed to begin to suffer, which I absolutely did not want! I had to start finding ways say no and let go of trying to do everything for everyone. Shaunae - When I first went full-time with my business, I thought I had to hustle ALL THE TIME. Like if I slowed down, the world would pass me by. I put business before everything else and my personal life suffered. I became so fixated on all things business and didn’t have a structure in place of how to exactly handle everything smoothly. I knew things needed to change. You Can Overcome It! Avoiding burnout is a huge part of self-care. Like we discussed in our Healthy Habits episode , it’s so important to put boundaries in place. It’s okay to say no to things. It’s okay to let things go. It’s okay to only focus on the essential tasks right now. Bottom line, it’s okay to take care of YOU first then focus on your business.
