Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedI loved meeting Brittany Hansen so much; it was such a gift spending time with her because she is a very well-rounded person! Brittany lives in Idaho with her spouse and children on 1/3 acre, and she is homesteading - or as she calls it Micro-homesteading, but it is totally effective! And some cool tips for city folks were shared, because she is using every inch of space, and has created a sharing community where she is, so she can access locally grown or made items, and offer some in return. We get to learn about raising QUAIL! I've heard of quail here and there, but have I actually seen a quail? Nope. Tasted their eggs? Nope again. Brittany's kids have an allergy to chicken eggs, and learned that quail eggs can be a good option, so she is raising her own quail to feed her family! (Check out my promo posts for this episode, because Brittany shared pictures with me!) I've been told since talking with her that quail might be a way around zoning with chickens, too... Brittany is immersed in the sustainability world - She is Co-Owner of Viiision, which, my understanding, is like a PR for companies to share their transparency of sustainability progress so that customers will see them to support them (Brittany, please correct me if I'm too far off!). AND, since we talked, she has started her own podcast, called "Who's Going to Fix This?" Talking about world issues, and who is taking the steps to make change happen. Brilliant! Only a couple of episodes in, and I'm hooked! Brittany's message she wants you to remember from our conversation: "If we want to change the world we have to lead with that change. She's learning a lot about the history of fashion, and also finding ways she would change it. Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedI briefly met Alyce Rose/AKA Ms Thrifty Rose/AKA Auntie Outside this January at Podfest, and I saw a post of hers where she advertised her 1st Wednesday Thrift Nic, and my podcaster radar alarm sounded - I had to hear more about this thrifting business - and boy did I! Alyce is CONNECTED, and she has an energy that you just want to be around - and she makes things happen! I just love Alyce's attitude that she doesn't worry about what others think. Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedI found Clara Franken in a podcast newsletter, and started listening that morning to her podcast, Travel Devil, and the first episode I listened to was about the Trash Traveler; a man who travels and brings attention to himself by cleaning up the area, and I knew I wanted to hear all about what else she's learned hosting a podcast all about sustainable travel. Clara lives in Germany, but is from Belgium, so she travels a lot, but she mostly travels by train, or "slow" travel, as she calls it. And she explains why. And she really walks the walk, and it shows, as the week prior to this episode airing, she's featured on a billboard at the train station in Leipzig! (she has yet to see it with her own eyes - not for lack of trying - but her friend has seen it!) Growing to Give is a climate-friendly, volunteer-driven, nonprofit farming operation in Brunswick, Maine, that grows certified-organic vegetables for donation. I invited my friends Karin Sorensen, Robin Knight and Mary Aveno to help me to chat up our favorite non-profit where we all had the honor of helping to grow organic produce to donate to local food pantries to offer some highly nutritious produce to our less food secure neighbors. We all met there, and became fast friends, and more like family in the same purpose. We missed each other when we were absent, and celebrated every day we were together, and we did some great work (they still do, but Karin and I moved away), and have helped to grow and donate over 100,000 lbs of food! There are several other volunteers at Growing to Give - too many to gather for an episode and everyone get a word in, but that's how the magic happens. Growing to Give began as a dream of property owners Patty Carton and John Newlin in 2015, and 2017 was the first year officially growing, and Robin and I were the first 2 volunteers with Theda, the OG Farm Manager, with 1 Rimol greenhouse, and now it's a well-oiled machine of hundreds of volunteers annually, several hoop houses for growing, as well as farm skills workshops, elderberry workshops, and an annual Farmyard Jam fundraiser. It's a very special place of fun, healing and family. Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedI have to say, I was so impressed with myself for getting through this conversation with sensation in my toes - I'm a total baby talking about blood and stuff, and I expected to have a hard time with it, but I was too interested to get queasy, I guess. Even the 2nd time listening to edit, it was still so fascinating! Feeling very lucky that Melissa Meadow crossed my Instagram feed. This opened my eyes to a ton of new information that's available. Melissa Meadow started her career early, and has been in the funeral home business since she was very young, evolved into being a mortician, and has tons of wisdom to share that we might not know about. I had only heard the phrase green burial in the last few months - let alone water cremation and others... AND I thought that cremation was more environmentally friendly than burying a whole body, because it took up more space - boy was I wrong about that! This is why I wanted to have Melissa on the podcast; in her words: "There are options that are better for the environment and align with those wanting transparency and options." I love that she shared so many new options! Have you already made plans for when you die? I had when my mom passed away, but that was in Maine, where I don't live anymore, so I have to plan again- and now I have more information to make a more informed decision. It may sound morbid, but it's an important topic, I think. The more you have planned out, the less traumatic your death will be - speaking from some experience... Play Later Play Later Lists Like LikedDo you know about Solar Thermal energy?? I didn't, either; I've heard of solar panels, solar farms, Community Solar... but not solar thermal. Enter Dan Razumovski, of Sun Catch Solar Thermal, out of Colorado! This might be more of a business or farm purchase- they're pricy, and take up a good amount of space, but it's a newer technology- and it's very cool! It stores electricity, so that if power goes out, you can still power your home for a week! If you're interested in solar thermal, though, Dan's company will help you to fill out grant applications and apply for tax breaks for updating, which, I could be wrong, but I haven't heard that many companies offer this service. His stories are meaningful and deep, and you can't help but be drawn in and want to support whatever he's putting out. Christopher is a high-end landscape designer, and he discovered for himself what a powerful addition native plants are to his design. He encourages everyone to plant natives wherever we can - just add a few even, to add biodiversity to our area. He talks about ways that adding native plants will improve the land, and bring in beneficial insects and birds, and other critters, and the magnitude of those positive changes. All from just planting a few native plants! A small effort for huge and lasting results! He also talks about the personal project he's working on, Tierra Linda Park, that he's experimenting and bringing back to life using natives, and the results already are truly awesome! I really enjoyed learning about Cleaner Safer Water from Mark Miller, the CEO and Founder of this affordable, lifetime water filtration system. It just makes sense to have something like this in case of power outage. I'm still in awe of not having to buy filters for it ever, AND that it can provider water for up to 300 people! 1 system could take care of a whole neighborhood! If you miss this cohort, they will still take applications for the next. Maine has set a BIG goal of eliminating food insecurity by 2030 (FIVE YEARS), and their plan includes growing more locally. Have you thought about farming at all, or gardening large scale? This is an incredible opportunity in my home state of Maine, and I'm going to be looking into where else this might be an option, because we need more farmers - we're losing them at an alarming rate, and with education from organizations like Merrymeeting Food Council, people can be set up for success! Please look into whether you have something like a Farm Skills Program near you, or take a Master Gardener Class, check out gardening books or classes, or volunteer at a farm near you for experience - knowing where our food comes from is becoming more important every day. The algorithm was just right not too long ago that I happened upon Seb Jagoe's Instagram reel and became obsessed with his excitement and vast knowledge about soil and growing. It's always a little nerve wracking to reach out cold to a stranger, but this time, at least, Seb was just so gracious to talk with me and share this message. I've had many conversations about soil health on the podcast, but Seb's energy alone is exciting, and different. He talks about the history of soil health, and also when he first started talking about soil. We also discuss the importance of taking care of our soil; how it's not a thing - it's a process. He talks a. lot about Indigenous Knowledge, and food forests, and how the white men took food forests over from the Native Americans and depleted them with so many of our current practices (weed and pest control, monocropping, to name a couple). He has big plans to educate as many people as possible through his social media videos to share his passion for nutrient dense foods and attracting pollinators - all without fertilizers and pest control - because healthy soil and plants will ward off pests naturally! Seb asks that we consider quality over convenience whenever possible. The waste from overconsumption and cheap junk is poisoning our water and soil currently. He said when asked what the word sustainability means to him that sustainability isn't good enough - and he's not wrong! Who wants things to continue as they are, after all? Don't we want better? I was able to watch the trailer on zoom of the documentary Trail Therapy, which is wonderful - telling the story of Sharon, a therapist who offers sessions while walking outside, as opposed to in a sterile room, to breathe in the fresh air and the scenery. So much so, that he just had a book published by the name of this episode - Man's Search for Sustainability. He talks about a book that he was inspired by, Man's Search for Meaning, by Victor Frankl. In his book, David focuses on bees and locusts - how we consider one more valuable than another, their differences and their strengths, and how they relate to sustainability - that is fascinating! I'm so inspired by all the things he's up to, and in such a short time! My very favorite thing so far that I've learned about him is his community involvement, and you know I'm obsessed with Community Sufficiency - taking care of each other and sharing resources for a bigger purpose... Kent and his family moved to Alberta Canada from Vancouver in 2022 and when they saw their house, he and his spouse could see where things would go, and were already making plans. When they moved, Kent brought a shovel in their vehicle, knowing the moving truck would be a few days, and he could at least dig some holes for the trees that were on their way. No time to waste with a Zone 3b Canadian Permaculture Food forest! Kent and his spouse both work full time and are raising 2 kids and 2 dogs, so they repurpose and thrift a lot of things and keep their end goal in mind, and do what they can a little at a time to get there. These are Kent's words "You eat an elephant one bite at time, not in one sitting. Make your grand plan and lay it out based on mature tree canopy size. Then you can take little bites, always towards the end goal." So true, Kent. So true. Oh my gosh, I just loved this conversation with Monica and Cindy of Rapt Gift Wrap! Their business is fabric wrap, to reduce the paper waste from gift wrapping, and it's so beautiful! I thought the timing of this was perfect; hopefully will give folks time to think about gift waste before the rush. Monica O'Neil and Cindy Estes are friends who started Rapt in Massachusetts to help reduce the paper waste in gift giving - the amount of paper after the holiday season fills dozens of FOOTBALL FIELDS, and they saw a problem and are doing something to try to fix it! One of my questions was is it appropriate to take the fabric wrap back to reuse it, or ask if someone will use it, and they have answers to that! These two are both 21 yearrs old, and in the beginning of the current Russia/Ukraine war, lost their homes and just about everything, but they've built themselves back up, and are dedicated to building a sustainable world for the next generation (Mykhailo has a 1 year old son and spouse, so very motivated). Jr Sparrow and I have been friends for a couple of years, but have talked more since I've moved to his home state - even though he doesn't live here now, he's got lots of memories here (and his mom), so he's sharing all kinds of good tips with me. I've been following her for a little while now, and at some point she messaged me and said something like "your podcast is about sustainability - I need to be a guest!" I wasn't going to say no - definitely not to an attorney... Kenya is an Environmental Attorney in CA - and soon adding Washington DC! She works for the Plaintiff, and gets to support our oceans and air - how cool is that? She has so many ideas that people can get involved in protecting our natural spaces! My biggest takeaway was for my new area, to talk with restaurants and ask them to advise customers to ASK for a straw or plastic cutlery, and ask the restaurants to make that a new practice, and to talk to them in a way that helps them realize there's a way to help save money AND save waste. I love how simple that sounds, and how doable it can be. I'm totally going to try this! This is a shorty, you guys (you're welcome!) - just thought I'd give a little update, since some huge life shifts have happened for me - some, maybe a lot of you, follow on social media, so you know that I recently moved - short update: it's mostly going well! Also, as it has been for a while now, menopause was brought up - October is Menopause Awareness Month - as well as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Alzheimers Awareness Month - and the election, and all the tension that accompanies - to which I'm just going to say BE KIND please. Crazy weather and high stress is so hard on everyone, and some of us could be on the brink of a breakdown... we don't always know who needs just a moment of kindness, so please just try. But I'll be posting more menopause stuff as it comes up - in my life, and in my friends' lives, it has been helpful. If you've experienced symptoms, please pay attention! I seriously want to scream what I'm learning from the rooftops, because the new study results are life changing - for real! There are several books and documentaries coming out that are blowing the lid off of the darkness we've been living in, and I'm so ready for acknowledgement and validation and RELIEF! I said this in the episode, but there are definitely lonely times in my new place, so if you need some time away, give me a heads up, and my door will always be open. She just recently (this year!) started gardening in containers, and she is HOOKED! I love her story of how and why she started, and how excited she gets talking about growing her own food on her balcony - and hearing about her future plans-- "they" say in the homesteading world that chickens are the gateway drug to farming, but growing your own food brings out a very special experience that hooks you in as well! I didn't ask, but I wonder how long until she calls herself a "plant lady" or "plant mom?" I joined a few Facebook groups before moving to VA, and I happened to see Natalie posting about her Foodscapes program on the local news, and I felt I needed to reach out to her. We learned so much about each other in our first Zoom meeting, and I was just obsessed with her story of not being able to grow anything until she spent time with them - the plant people will understand what we mean-- I couldn't possibly leave out her awesome message that she hopes you'll take away from this conversation - "Keep it simple...small changes matter." LOVE this - it's so true! Natalie has her own media company called Rudy's Girl Media, and she's been working with a Zero Waste program theough the VA Public Media to produce her Foodscapes segment.
