What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Welcome back, DIF Listeners! Jacqueline Linares wrote, directed and produced the short film “What Friends Do” that played at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in December 2024. As you’ll hear early in this interview, I find her film wonderful, genuine and heartwarming to the point that when I met her at the festival’s Opening Night Gala and saw “What Friends Do” on Jacky’s badge I immediately said, “Is it OK if I hug you?” (I learned when she booked the podcast recording that she goes by, “Jacky.”) “What Friends Do” took home the Programmer’s Prize for Exceptional Filmmaking and I was delighted when I saw Jacky’s name pop into my calendar for this podcast. I did not get to moderate Jacky’s Q&A at the festival, making this podcast particularly important to me. This conversation was incredibly fun to record and I have no doubt that all who listen will enjoy. Jacky has a very bright future ahead and I look forward to seeing more films! Dedicated listeners of this podcast know that whenever Fr3deR1cK Taylor comes out to Los Angeles from Atlanta, we find time to record a podcast. The good news is that Fred often comes out to L.A.! The last time he visited, Fred and I talked for a whopping three and a half hours. We have gotten feedback from people that perhaps we shouldn’t talk this long, but since I am incapable of any form of self control while recording I chose a retroactive compromise; I chopped this conversation into three one hour and ten minute bits. Perhaps I made that decision pointless by releasing them all on the same day and giving them the same episode number with a letter suffix. As they say, you can lead a podcaster to water but you cannot make them drink. Technically this is Fred’s ninth guest appearance on Discover Indie Film and the fifth to earn the “shoot the s**t” title, indicating that Fred came by with no specific project to discuss. What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful Spring Wednesday! Actor, writer and producer Alex Frnka brought the film “Blue Moon” to Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2022 and the film blew everyone away. Wonderfully written, wonderfully acted, wonderfully shot, and wonderfully directed by FI-LA alum Diliana Deltcheva, “Blue Moon” took home the Audience Award for Best Short Film, Drama. This was no surprise, as the film’s authentic intensity impacts everyone who sees it. We had around seven people onstage for the “Blue Moon” Q&A at FI-LA 2022, which means that this podcast marks my first opportunity to have an extended conversation with Alex. She did not disappoint! I hope you enjoy listening to this podcast as much as I enjoyed recording it. You can follow Alex on Instagram at @alexfrnka ( https://www.instagram.com/alexfrnka ). Happy Monday, Folks! Previous to this podcast, my only interaction with Parker Croft was via email. He was super busy when his film “As Easy As Closing Your Eyes” screened at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2024, leaving it up to writer and producer Aaron Golden to represent the film. It was great to have Aaron at the festival and he gave an excellent Q&A, but if you know me then you know that I was delighted that this podcast granted an opportunity to get to know Aaron’s creative partner in that film, director, co-writer and producer Parker Croft. By the way, “As Easy As Closing Your Eyes” won several awards at SOFF 2024, but I will just mention this one, Best in Fest – Featurette. Sure, I could list the rest, but who has time? This chat with Parker is a truly enjoyable one. I hope listening to it is half as fun as it was to have this conversation. If you want to see this remarkable film that took home NINE awards, you can find it on FilmShortage ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HlLcZyeQEQ ) If you want to learn more about the production company that Parker, Aaron and more have going, visit Paper Horse Pictures ( https://www.paperhorsepictures.coms ) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Discover Indie Film Podcast Links DIF Podcast Website – DIF Instagram – DIF BlueSky Discover Indie Film Foundation (nonprofit for the arts) Links DIF Foundation – Sherman Oaks Film Festival – Film Invasion Los Angeles…
What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Welcome back, Discover Indie Film Listeners. We have a great show for you today! If I wrote fun titles for these podcasts, I just might name this one, “Claire Chubbuck is awesome.” Because Claire is freaking awesome! But what I should do is play the normal rules, letting you know that Claire directed the film “A Way Home” that played at the Sherman Oaks Film Festiva l in 2023 and took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette – Drama and Best Performance by a Cast – Featurette. “A Way Home” amazes me with its authenticity and emotional truth, as well as the brilliant performances in it. In this podcast we get to learn how Claire’s process, Cathartic Realism, is exactly what made this a great film. You can learn more about Claire at @claire_chubbuck ( https://www.instagram.com/claire_chubbuck/ ) or at the website catharticrealism.com We do discuss Claire’s mother, a highly respected acting teacher, in this podcast and if you want to learn more you can visit ivanachubbuck.com or @ivanachubbuckstudio https://www.instagram.com/ivanachubbuckstudio _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Discover Indie Film Podcast Links DIF Podcast Website – DIF Instagram – DIF BlueSky Discover Indie Film Foundation (nonprofit for the arts) Links DIF Foundation – Sherman Oaks Film Festival – Film Invasion Los Angeles…
What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Jared Hall is the epitome of an artist and he proved this when his beautiful short film, Anansi the Spider, played at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2024 and took home the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Short Film – Animation and for Outstanding Cast Performance Animation. I hope you get as much inspiration listening to our talk as I did partaking. I couldn’t wait to get to what inspires Jared with his 4 Questions. Happy Talk with a Filmmaker Friday! I normally refer to people as filmmakers, but when I think about Jared Hall the word that actually comes to my mind is, “artist.” Jared is an animator, filmmaker, and illustrator, but what unifies all of his talents is that he’s an artist. There you go… Artist! Jared’s short film, Anansi the Spider, played at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2024 and took home the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Short Film – Animation and for Outstanding Cast Performance Animation. This film is beautiful and it was difficult for me to not make that word in all caps. And it’s fun! And it’s cool! Honestly, Anansi the Spider is one of those films I feel comfortable stealing a line from a childhood friend, “It’s okay if you don’t like it, but if you don’t like it then I don’t like you.” If you want to learn more about Jared, go to @thatishall ( https://www.instagram.com/thatishall /) or his website at https://thatishall.myportfolio.com _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Discover Indie Film Podcast Links DIF Podcast Website – DIF Instagram – DIF BlueSky Discover Indie Film Foundation (nonprofit for the arts) Links DIF Foundation – Sherman Oaks Film Festival – Film Invasion Los Angeles…
What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Pablo Riesgo’s engaging feature film “Marco Polo” was an official selection at BOTH Film Invasion Los Angeles and Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2024 and took home an impressively long list of awards including FILA 2024 Grand Jury Award – Best Feature Film – Drama. For someone who so clearly understands what it takes to make a GREAT film I was very eager to ask Pablo the 4 Questions! Happy Monday and welcome back to the Discover Indie Film Podcast! Pablo Riesgo’s feature film “Marco Polo” was an official selection at BOTH Film Invasion Los Angeles and Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2024. Something you might not know is that we do allow films to be official selections in both festivals, but we do only have them play in the theater once. There’s too many great films to have the same film in the theater twice! But thanks to being an official selection twice, “Marco Polo” has a long awards list. Here it is! FILA 2024 Grand Jury Award – Best Feature Film – Drama Grand Jury Award – Best Screenplay – Feature Film – Pablo Riesgo Almonacid SOFF 2024 Grand Jury Award – Best Supporting Performer – Feature Film – Jorge Zuloaga Grand Jury Award – Best Performance by a Cast – Feature Film Grand Jury Award – Best Cinematography – Feature Film – Marko Alonso I know that I don’t usually list the awards this way, but hey… “Marco Polo” is a special film that is near and dear to my heart. It is an honest, painfully authentic coming of age film that includes moments of loss, addiction, family, and friendship. I highly recommend that you see this film! Finally, Pablo is a great person. He lives in Los Angeles and has come to some of our mixers. It is always a pleasure to talk to Pablo, which made it extra fun to get to know him better by interviewing him for the podcast. What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Wednesday I had the pleasure of posting my chat with filmmaker Jess Paul, whose touching film “Burying Baby” was an Official Selection at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival last year and took home the Programmer’s Prize for Exceptional Filmmaking. If that names sounds familiar, Jess actually was my surprise interviewer for our special 500th episode where I agreed to have the mic turned on myself for questioning for the very first time. In getting to know Jess I’ve learned she is truly a die hard film lover so I was very excited to get to her 4 Questions!
