These voice memos are starting to feel more and more like The Fast and the Furious : nobody knows the plot, but it’s loud and it keeps coming back. Slate Auto is shaking things up with a sub-$25,000 electric pickup truck, built in a repurposed Indiana printing plant, aiming to be the budget king of EVs. Meanwhile, Waymo and Toyota are flirting with a partnership to bring self-driving tech to robotaxis and maybe even your next Corolla, but the deal’s still playing coy. And always remember. A crush is for a time of prosperity. ______________________________ Meet me at ASOTU CON on May 14th! https://www.asotucon.com/speaker/elena-ciccotelli ______________________________ Wanna be a featured guest on the show? *Published this one so fast, I didn't even edit it!* The California New Car Dealers Association (CNCDA) is slamming the brakes on Volkswagen and its EV sidekick, Scout Motors, with a lawsuit spicier than a jalapeño-fueled road trip. The charge? Violating California's franchise laws by attempting to sell vehicles directly to consumers. Ellena Sweet, a third-gen dealer, CNCDA board member and Chief Compliance Officer at Stevens Management, explained that Scout Motors knowingly opposed the 2023 franchise law amendment that would make their direct-to-consumer model illegal. The lawsuit seeks to halt Scout's sales in California and impose a $2,500 fine for each deposit taken, totaling approx $35 million. The core issue centers on manufacturers being prohibited from competing directly with their franchisee dealers, with VW’s bankroll and Scout’s “affiliate” status stirring the pot and being a key point of contention. There's gonna be so much more to this conversation, subscribe to the show to stay up to date! ______________________________ Read the full lawsuit here: https://www.cncda.org/wp-content/uploads/4024-04-22-FILED-Complaint_Case_InitiationVolkswagen.pdf _______________________________ Connect with Elena: https://evs4everyone.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/elenaciccotelli/ Let's talk on X: https://twitter.com/EVs_forEveryone Are you connected with the show on LinkedIn? https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-evs-for-everyone-podcast/ ________________________ Connect with Ellena Sweet on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ellenawoodhams/…
Jason Goldfarb, EV Infrastructure Attorney at Falcon Rappaport & Berkman LLP and Aaron Li, CEO at PandoElectric joined the show live from the neon-lit hustle of Las Vegas during the EV Charging Summit & Expo last month. This discussion centered around multi-family housing with EV chargers - with 40-45% of EV charging installations happening in apartment complexes and condos, this isn’t just about plugging in—it’s a full-on logistical tango. Jason and Aaron dove into the nitty-gritty: installation costs that can make your wallet wince, building capacity limits that test your patience, and maintenance headaches that keep property managers up at night. But hold onto your charging cables, because innovation stole the show! Picture this: a slick local mesh network that links chargers without the Wi-Fi sprawl, slashing installation costs by a jaw-dropping 80%. From the need for standardized protocols to tech that’s ready to scale, this episode is a charged-up call to action for making EV charging in multi-family homes as seamless as a Vegas magic show. The EV4E world tour is coming to a close (4 cities in 7 days) but I'm not stopping! Here's your top 3 EV stories of the week: global electric vehicle sales surged 40% in March 2025 to 1.7 million units, defying U.S. tariff disruptions, with China and Europe driving growth. Tesla’s European sales plummeted 49% amid aging models and backlash over CEO Elon Musk’s political ties, though a new Model Y offers hope. The New York International Auto Show, starting April 16, showcases electrifying debuts like Kia’s EV4, Subaru’s Trailseeker EV, and Hyundai’s Palisade. Despite trade challenges, the EV market’s resilience and innovation shine through. ___________________________ Have an idea for an episode or want to be a FEATURED GUEST on the show? Trevor Palmer, the mastermind behind EV Blocks, is BACK on the show today (this time in person at the EV Charging Summit and Expo in Las Vegas) to spill the tea on how he's turbocharging the world of EV infrastructure. This seasoned electrical contractor was fed up with the same old problems with commercial EV charging installation—weather woes and pedestals playing hide-and-seek—so he decided to take the wheel and invent something downright awesome: EV Blocks, the ready-made concrete bases that are proving to be an efficiency essential. In this episode, we’re plugging into the nitty-gritty of how his brainchild is speeding up installs faster than you can say "where’s my charger?" while keeping everything as consistent as a perfectly brewed cup of coffee. Trevor also let me in on how EV Blocks is sparking a global revolution, with production hubs popping up in the UK, Canada, and the US like well-placed charging stations on a road trip. Hit play to catch how this guy’s paving the way—literally—for an EV future that’s smoother, slicker, and ready to roll without a hitch! _______________________________ This episode is sponsored by EV Blocks, providing sustainable infrastructure for quick EV charger installations with a future-proof design. It's Friday. Let's make some bad decisions and kick things off with the 2025 GMC Sierra EV Denali, a luxurious, multitasking electric truck that’s redefining rugged with a six-figure price tag and 300-plus miles of range. (umm, okay). Next, let's talk about the chaos of President Trump’s 25% tariffs on imported vehicles, effective April 3, which are jacking up prices on foreign EVs and threatening U.S. supply chains—because nothing says ‘freedom’ like a $12,000 surcharge. Then, it’s over to China, where Xiaomi’s SU7 sedan smashed records with over 29,000 deliveries in March, proving a phone company can outpace EV veterans in a market that’s basically an electrified Thunderdome. _______________________________ Wanna be a guest on the show? Alex Rawitz, Co-founder at DIMO dishes on the messy world of device connectivity, arguing that a slick, universal protocol could be the secret sauce for smarter cities and even *smarter* cars. Yes, we throw a little bit of shade at the automakers who’ve dumped billions into connected vehicles only to get lackluster returns, thanks to clunky apps that drivers don’t vibe with—looking at you, GM! DIMO’s big brain move? A Tesla-inspired developer platform and an email-like protocol that lets all the car tech play nice, no awkward translations needed. Alex and his team are stirring the pot with a vision where your ride’s black box chats effortlessly with the cloud, making drivers spoiled rotten with seamless wizardry. Also, DIMO has so many cool partnerships going on, you'll now be able to get a vehicle warranty and cash back on carbon offset credits just by sharing some data from your car's "vault" on DIMO. Plus, you'll hear our cheeky nod to the auto industry’s global showdown, where Asian EVs are flexing hard, while the U.S. scrambles to keep its cool in the hardware-software hustle. And yes! We did go get some Brooklyn pizza after we recorded this. (Thank god). The place was literally called "Best Pizza" - go figure! ______________________________ This episode is sponsored by DIMO. It's day 4 in Vegas and I'm officially on the struggle bus. But alas, I'm here with the top 3 EV stories of the week. President Trump’s new 25% tariff on imported cars, starting April 3rd, threatens to jolt car prices skyward, though Tesla might dodge the worst of it. Rivian unveiled the luxurious RZ-1 SUV, a 400-mile-range beast with a solar twist, aiming to woo eco-elites for $95,000 a pop. Meanwhile, China’s BYD is sneaking past(?) tariffs by assembling their $20,000 Seagull Lite in Mexico, sparking Detroit’s ire and X’s meme machines. Oh and special thanks to everyone who recorded with me on-site at the EV Charging Summit and Expo in Vegas! Lot's more charging content to come... Hannah Lutz, Deputy Editor of Technology and Innovation at Automotive News shares more in-depth coverage on this episode about IONNA, the new EV charging network created by a joint venture of eight major automakers. With a recently opened charging station (aka "rechargery") in Apex, North Carolina, IONNA offers unique amenities like a cafe, conference rooms, video games, and a nostalgic 80s road trip aesthetic that sets it apart from traditional charging stations. (Um, yes please!) The collaboration is notable for bringing together eight competing automakers, who each have a seat on the board and rotate leadership of various subcommittees. The charging station features innovative design elements, such as a side-mounted screen with physical buttons instead of a touchscreen, and enhanced security measures like QR code access. The overall experience aims to create a more comfortable, community-oriented charging environment that goes beyond the typical utilitarian approach to EV charging. James Bell, Head of Corporate Communications and Public Relations at Kia America is BACK on the show today to talk about how Kia is positioning itself as a strong contender in the electric vehicle market, offering competitive and affordable EVs like the EV6 and EV9 that have won multiple prestigious awards. Kia is focusing on making electric vehicles accessible to a wider audience through upcoming models like the EV3 and EV4, emphasizing value, reliability, and an attractive design that makes drivers proud of their vehicle. James also highlights the importance of intuitive design, ease of use, and creating an emotional connection with the vehicle that goes beyond just functional transportation. The conversation also explores the IONNA charging network, which aims to transform the charging experience by creating welcoming, safe, and convenient "rechargeries" across the United States. Kirsten Von Busch, Director of Product Marketing at Experian Automotive is BACK on the show today to talk about Experian's 2024 Year In Review which tracked electric vehicle trends. According to Experian data, 9% of new car registrations went electric, led by Tesla, Ford, and Hyundai and the Model Y, Model 3, and Cybertruck were noted as some of the highest selling models. Boomers are lagging at 20% of EV buys despite dominating 30% of the overall market, while Millennials zap up 30% of new EVs. Weirdly, El Paso, Texas, stole the show with a wild 99% five-year EV growth rate, joined by Las Vegas and Houston as unexpected hotspots. The used EV market’s heating up too, with Tesla, Chevy, and Nissan duking it out for supremacy. Don't miss this episode for your monthly dose of must have EV knowledge. Grené Baranco, EVP of Mercedes-Benz of Buckhead, a family-owned dealership in Atlanta, shares the history of her family’s automotive business and her store's shift to EVs. Starting in 1978, the company evolved from handling various car brands (including Pontiac) to becoming a successful Mercedes-Benz dealership. Grené discusses the shift toward EVs, explaining Mercedes-Benz’s strategic approach to introducing EVs and the encouraging customer response, with 15% of their new car sales now electric. She highlights the benefits of leasing EVs to keep pace with fast-evolving technology and shares her positive experience driving one. Grené also emphasizes the role of dealerships in supporting EV adoption by developing charging infrastructure, often allowing non-customers to use their stations. VW released the new ID. EVERY1, an entry-level EV concept in Europe with specs stuck in 2017 and prices that refuse to budge. Brent Gruber, Executive Director of the Electric Vehicle Practice at J.D. Power is BACK on the show today to talk about the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Ownership Study that was released earlier this month. While it's true market share of BEVs holds steady at just 9.1%, Brent says the ride’s just getting started with a surge of diverse, jaw-dropping options from Hyundai, Kia, and Chevy. Satisfaction is soaring to new heights this year, fueled by slick upgrades to current models, thrilling new releases, and a smoother(ish) public charging experience—especially for non-Tesla drivers. Teaming up with PlugShare, the study spills the tea: premium plug-in hybrids are stealing the show, rivaling top-tier battery EVs, while mass-market hybrids lag behind. But it’s not all smooth cruising—public charging infrastructure’s still a bumpy road, with funding cuts and blind spots threatening to stall EV momentum, even as manufacturers and states race to keep pace. _______________________________ Connect with Elena: https://evs4everyone.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/elenaciccotelli/ Let's talk on X: https://twitter.com/EVs_forEveryone Are you connected with the show on LinkedIn? https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-evs-for-everyone-podcast/ ________________________ Connect with Brent Gruber on LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/in/brentgruber…
Sherb Brown, President of Fleet Connection (and Former President of Bobit Business Media) and John Possumato, CEO of DriveItAway join the show today to talk about the *many* challenges of fleet electrification, particularly for small businesses with small fleets. Sherb goes into great detail about his experience in the fleet industry, noting small fleet owners often lack knowledge about topics like EVs and fleet management. Cost is a major concern for small fleets, who focus more on upfront costs rather than lifecycle costs and plug-in hybrids are seen as a potential solution, but have limitations in range for commercial vehicles. Brad Smith, Founder and Principal Consultant at Leroy Lynn joins the show today to talk about why blockchain technology is poised to have a major impact on the automotive and EV industries due to its decentralized nature, efficient transactions, and ability to provide trust and transparency. Brad talked about all the key benefits of blockchain for EVs including micro-transactions for vehicle data, securing digital identities, and battery passports that track battery health and history. One of the most interesting applications (in my opinon) was the "Battery Passport" which has the potential to completely revolutionize the used EV market, as they provide a tamper-proof record of a battery's origin, usage, and condition. Although widespread implementation has not yet been achieved, be sure to follow Brad to stay on top of all the exciting new developments in this space! _______________________________ This episode is sponsored by Leroy Lynn, a leader in providing educational services, onboarding support, and technical expertise, helping clients transition to Web3 and blockchain solutions effectively. Molly Boigon, Reporter covering technology and innovation for Automotive News is back on the show to discuss the impact of the Trump administration's efforts to roll back the Biden administration's EV incentives and policies. And yes there are (just a few) obstacles the Trump administration faces on this side quest, such as funds already being earmarked by Congress and the complex nature of the automotive industry. Molly and I also talked about the factors driving up vehicle prices, including inflation and how consumer preferences are shifting towards larger vehicles as well as how automakers are considering the global trend towards electrification and potential competitive disadvantages if the US market changes course. This a developing story, y'all. Melinda Zabritski, Head of Automotive Financial Insights for Experian Automotive joins the show today to talk about the dynamic shifts in EV ownership trends, facing a notable tilt toward leasing, especially among non-luxury models. This surge in preference is fueled by appealing tax incentives (for now!) and lower monthly payments, making EVs more accessible. In 2024 there was a slight decline in buyers' credit scores and the allure of electric vehicles continues unabated, thanks to financial strategies like lease buyouts, driving a rapid expansion in the used EV market. Melinda also explains that major players like Carmax and Carvana are leading the charge in used EV financing, highlighting a growing consumer preference for affordability. As we accelerate into 2025, these trends underscore many of the changes happening in the EV market, marking a decisive era of growth and accessibility. ______________________________ Check out Experian's EV Resource Page for all things electric vehicle data: https://www.experian.com/automotive/ev-resource-center?cmpid=EVS_for_Everyone _______________________________ This episode is sponsored by Experian. As an experienced electrical contractor, Trevor faced repeated challenges with the traditional installation process of EV charging stations, including weather-related delays and the frequent misplacement of pedestals. Addressing these obstacles head-on, he developed a game-changing solution: the ready-made concrete base known as EV Blocks. This episode dives deep into how this innovative approach not only accelerates deployment but also enhances consistency across installations, ensuring stations are up and running without unnecessary delays. Published this episode SUPER FAST today because a.) The Eagles won last night and b.) this is a TRENDING TOPIC. Mike Murphy, one of the Republican Party’s most successful political media consultants is BACK on the show today! Mike is the CEO of EVPolitics.org and the American EV Jobs Alliance and today he sheds light on "A Political X-Ray of Elon Musk," a new poll results showing Elon Musk's shifting public perception, revealing a surge in popularity among Republicans and a decline among Democrats post the November elections. Musk has also developed a significant gender gap in his favorability ratings, being more popular with men and gasoline vehicle drivers, (ha! imagine that) and less so with those concerned about climate change. This study indicates a political polarization around Tesla, contrasting it with more traditional car brands like Ford and Toyota, which are now favored by likely future EV buyers.
