Today, Roberta talks to Lisa Saruga about her new book The Trauma Tree: Going Beyond Survival, Growing Toward Wholeness, available from Kregel publishers. Trauma doesn’t have to define you. Trauma is a liar. It claims that all hope is lost and that pain dictates your life. Lisa Saruga understands this struggle deeply. As a licensed counselor, trauma therapist, and a victim of sexual assault, she's been there, and she knows the way out. The Trauma Tree is a companion for your healing journey. Saruga walks with you through her own story and the stories of survivors, demonstrating how you can move through trauma, avoid re-traumatization, and grow stronger in your mind, body, and spirit. Today, Roberta talks to Dorcas Hoover about the new book The Victor's Crown of Glory: True, Miraculous Stories of God at Work in the War-Torn Middle East and North Africa, available from Good Books publishers. Can the church in the Middle East and North Africa survive the ravages of radical Islamic terrorists, or should the believers flee? What happens when a sheik shouts “Allahu Akbar” during the pastor’s sermon? Whose voice did the ISIS captive hear in the prison cell? What was the significance of the Man in white’s message to the Muslim family? What is the outcome when ISIS wives demand to live with the Christian families? Will the radicals hang the young pastor they kidnapped, blindfolded, and beat? The Victor’s Crown of Glorytakes the reader to the frontlines of the battle in the Middle East where God’s miraculous power is displayed in the midst of evil. Stories of God at work in the 21st Century feel as if they come straight from the book of Acts. Gripping accounts showcase daring, modern day heroes of the faith risking all to follow Jesus in the face of radical ISIS terrorism, kidnappings, bombs, secret police, and imprisonment. The book is filled with heartwarming eyewitness accounts of miracles of God at work in the midst of the darkest, most dangerous of circumstances. From the epicenter of Middle Eastern conflict, refugee stories depict Jesus showing up to care about those who have lost everything. He is reaching out to Muslims, and they are responding in unprecedented numbers. These first-hand accounts include a biography of the courageous, resilient Syrian pastor whose life is fraught with danger, who lives with his ear to the heartbeat of God, and for whom miracles are more common than the falling barrel bombs. Eyewitness accounts uplift and encourage, strengthening the reader’s faith that God will be present in their own challenging circumstances. This is a hope-filled story of triumph on the frontlines of a fierce battle. Today, guest host Luke Taylor talks to Jonathan Williams about his book The Edomite Enigma: Esau, His Descendants and Romans 9:10-13, available from WGS publishers. When we read Paul’s words in Romans 9:13, that God loved Jacob and hated Esau, what are we to make of it? While no one would question that God loved Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, did God hate Esau who was also a son of Isaac and Abraham’s grandson? If he did, why? But let’s back up a couple of verses. There’s more intrigue. When we read in 9:11 that God chose Jacob and not Esau, that his choice was not based on Jacob’s or Esau’s behavior (good or bad), and that the choice was made before either was born, what are we to make of that? In The Edomite Enigma, Jonathan Williams provides a fresh approach by exploring the historical background of Paul's words. He believes a proper interpretation of Romans 9:10-13 comes by examining the history of Jacob and Esau, the history of Israel and Edom, the prophetic and extra-canonical statements about Edom, and the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15. An examination of this history puts the interpreter in the correct frame of mind to approach the verses with the background that informed Paul rather than a centuries-later debates from various systematic theologies. Today, guest host Luke Taylor talks to Jonathan Williams about his book Romans 9 and the Story Paul is Telling, available from WGS publishers. God is faithful! His word has not failed! These are the foundation-laying, faith-building, and heart-warming words that the Apostle Paul gave to us in Romans 9. Poetically written, symmetrically presented, structurally solid, and spoken with deep emotion, Romans 9 presents Paul’s masterful answer to his objectors who cried—how can you say that Jesus is Israel’s Messiah when so many of our people do not believe? He answered, God is faithful. His word has not failed. Let me show you how. But the beauty of Romans 9 has been lost. It has been lost in a controversy over its meaning as different sides in a centuries-long debate have used it as an arsenal for weapons. Is it possible to regain what Paul was saying? Is it possible to hear freshly the story that Paul was telling? Today, Roberta talks to Kari Baker about her new book Finding KIND: Discovering Hope and Purpose While Loving Kids with Invisible Neurological Differences. ENCOURAGEMENT FOR FAMILIES TOUCHED BY AUTISM, ADHD and NEURODIVERSITY “When an earthquake occurs, the tectonic plates shift far beneath the surface, and they never go back to where they started.” Kari Baker always loved a good plan. But when her only son Brady was diagnosed with autism in 2014, her plans for a typical parenting experience were shaken to the core. Her journey started with all the pain, uncertainty, and isolation that so many special needs parents encounter, but along the way she found faith, community, and joy in surrendering to God’s design. Finding KIND is an account of Kari’s initial awakening to Brady’s neurological differences, the early years adapting to life as an autism mom, and later accepting and appreciating Brady for exactly who God made him to be. Ultimately, Kari’s experiences as a KIND Mom offer practical suggestions for thriving when the best laid plans go awry. Anyone who knows and loves a kid with invisible neurological differences or who is exploring faith in the midst of life’s challenges will find hope and encouragement in Kari’s story. Kari A.
