Those who hate the Electoral College also hate our republic, because there would be no United States without the Electoral College. The Connecticut Compromise and Electoral College are the only reason the 13 different states could unite and come to an agreement to ratify the Constitution and create a new nation. These two previsions prevent small, less populated states from becoming the subjects of the larger, more populated states. It is what gives the minority in this country a voice. Many people today would like to get rid of the Electoral College and choose the president by a popular vote, moving us closer to a direct democracy. If that ever happens this will no longer be the United States of America. What does it mean to live in a republic, and how is it different from a direct democracy?
