Has “freedom” turned into one of those buzzwords honored more in the attraction than in its application? Frederick Douglass delivered a “West India Emancipation” speech at Canandaigua, New York, on the twenty-third anniversary of the event. He uttered two paragraphs that became the most quoted sentences of all of his public speeches. They began with the words, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” We like the idea of being free, but what is the true sense of freedom?
