This week I am away on holiday, so trying something new. I am reading an article from the Economist called 'How to worry wisely about AI'
The article discusses the rapid progress in artificial intelligence (AI) and the concerns it raises regarding its potential dangers. It highlights the call for a pause in the creation of advanced AI systems by the Future of Life Institute due to fears of loss of control over civilization. The emergence of large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, has demonstrated unexpected talents, leading to excitement but also anxiety about AI's capabilities. The article explores the transformative potential of AI in various fields, from solving big problems to threatening job markets and even humanity itself. It discusses different regulatory approaches taken by governments, ranging from a light-touch approach to stricter regulation like the EU's proposed law. The article concludes by advocating for a measured approach to AI regulation, emphasizing the need to balance its opportunities with the assessment of risks.
