american-made beauty calm my guest today
is a woman who has inspired me in many
ways one of the reasons is is that as a
young woman myself growing up in the
beauty industry I was able to really
adapt and learn and be able to try all
sorts of different things in my career
and being a great student allowing
myself to climb the ladder quickly my
guest today
Anita Lumpkin who is the national
director of education for universal
companies is that type of person and has
really done a phenomenal amount of
things in her career to advance herself
as well as advancing the industry she’s
responsible for developing and managing
a training programs for
over 113 spas she creates protocols and
treatment menus she directs the
universal company’s wellness and
learning center here in Southern
California she contributes four national
publications the area of professional
development and holistic therapies she
has a PhD in sociology and over ten
years experience in the spa industry
anita is a mom of four lover of art and
lipstick and of long lashes
welcome Anita I’m delighted to have you
with us today love talking about
education and beauty and all of it well
so I need to give us so you’re really
one of those pivotal people in our
industry that’s shaping the way that not
only is the industry evolving because of
the type of education that you’re that
you’re doing but also helping to shape
the way young professionals in our
industry acquire education so let’s take
a step back and talk a little bit about
you personally tell us how you found
yourself in this pitiful position of a
being in this position with the beauty
industry you know it’s funny I I started
in this industry the same way that I
feel like a lot of the people on me
started out I did it as a way turn a
little extra money to put myself through
school with the goal to do something
else and I fell completely in love the
beauty industry was already second
nature because my mom was a
cosmetologist so it was you know this is
I grew up in that world I have pictures
of me inside of a playpen in a salon it
really has been second nature that being
said I fell in love with massage first
just being able to really connect to the
client and just they became my friends
mm-hmm when I started at Universal I
started in the sales team and it and it
really grew from there I was going to
school
work in putting myself through college
as a young mom and I knew I always
wanted to be a teacher I loved watching
someone their eyes open and the glow
they get when they learn something new
love being a mentor so I always knew
that was what I was supposed to do and
just being able to match the two
together in my role at Universal
companies has been phenomenal for me
because there’s such a need in this
industry in particular prior you know
working with the company I work with now
right so but will you grew up you were
in the salon and exposed did you go
straight from high school into college I
did I didn’t even take three months off
you know I graduated in May and then but
did the summer session the late summer
session at a community college first
uh-huh
right yeah and and so when you started
college did you what was the what was
the goal what was your pursuit at that
point you know believe it or not I
wanted to a journalist okay started
school I wanted to be a journalist and I
wanted to do conflict areas so I you
know how do you how you end up in the
video industry but anyway being a war
journalist and well that didn’t really
settle well with me when second year in
college I wanted to be a humanitarian
and activist and so that’s what I really
started shifting my focus to what I
ultimately got my post grad degree in
with the sociology really wanted to
learn why people do the things they do
why why are there so many demographic
groups but what challenges these groups
have and so on and that’s made me a very
good educator because I can work with a
lot of different types of people
and leave them where they are right and
it probably quite fascinating if you if
you approached it to begin with in terms
of being an activist and then looking at
human behavior that probably gave you
great insight into how people take care
of themselves I mean I can really see
that connection there
there’s so many connections with you
know people are really longer now
Americans than ever before and they’re
not just living like by the years
they’re surviving fonder
uh-huh and it’s amazing to me how just
knowing the different demographics and
and accessibility to good wellness
practices good food good medicine you
know these things are all a part of a
healthy lifestyle right so when you work
in this industry we know that when you
take care of yourself you’re a healthier
person right you’re going to live longer
you’re going to have better
relationships so this is all connected
and so when you graduated from college
was it with the idea did you have a
particular career that you were going
after yes I wanted to work originally
with order work originally with a
university to teach mm-hmm that was my
number one goal and into what happened I
really fell in love with our customers
like what keeps me going and you know
every day is that far that aesthetician
that massage therapist says that Anita
since you came and trained our boss
we’ve hit our goal you know we tripled
our goals mm-hmm we’re now you know
we’re now number one or reason or so on
and so forth that’s what makes a
difference in my day mm-hmm and so from
our audience that don’t doesn’t no
universal tell us a little bit about who
Universal is and and what was your first
job there essentially we are a
distributor of products for the Wellness
boss you need salon industry mm-hmm we
carry everything that you need from when
you first think about opening your
business to your the year that you
retire and give that business to about
pass it down or sell it when we do it
all mm-hmm and one of the things that
really sets us apart is our quality of
education we see education as not a an
optional thing it is a essential piece
of your professional development an
essential piece to women
be successful and being able to provide
education to your staff in this industry
howdy as you know it’s really
challenging because there is not a lot
of quality education out there a lot of
the education is very brand driven right
when when you’re talking about brand
driven education you’re talking more
about a sales pitch and not a skill set
that they’re leaving with right right
one of the things that I wanted to do
and I was very specific when I accepted
the job was we have to make education
education hmm when you go to a
university although you know they’re
going to sell you hoodies and stuff
that’s of course good but they’re really
teaching you to take a skill set away
you can apply and become more successful
with and know how to interact with in
your field and that’s what the education
that we provide is so we it’s
professional development you come and
you learn a skill set in explain
education but it’s so much more than
that and you know what I think is really
exciting and about universal companies
in your role in particular is their I
don’t really think that there are many
places in this industry that has someone
with your level of academic
accomplishments that’s really shaping
the way education is being delivered and
so tell us a little bit about how when
you talk about wanting to make education
educational and developing a skill set
what are some of the things that you
bring into that educational environment
so that people are really walking away
with tangible skills now the first thing
I’m sorry very key is that we teach I
teach people how to develop goals
mm-hmm you know when you are in school
especially in beauty industry a lot of
times what I hear they have a very
unrealistic income expectation what
happens is they’re they work the first
one or two years and you know our
industry unfortunately has a very high
dropout rate it’s which industries
because their expectations are not set
properly right know how to set goals
didn’t know how to get business and so
on and so that’s the first thing mmm-hmm
I think that university levels do that
really well because they do so much
analysis behind it right right
free doesn’t really do that well you
know when you go into university they
you you have to talk to a counselor and
the first thing they tell you is okay
this is your expected first year salary
that you were you probably will on your
going into engineering they’re going to
tell you depending on where you live
this is an actual earn so it’s open we
don’t do that in a beauty school hmm
I’m asking some of the the income
expectations and I’m thinking to myself
wow that’s just not realistic but if
this is what you want to earn let me
show you how you can get that right and
I’ll show you exactly what you have to
put in to get that number and that turns
into a goal instead of an expectation
uh-huh which is really powerful because
there there really is a difference
between if you’re looking to enter this
industry and just have a livable wage
that this is an industry that can
provide that but if you’re in this
industry and you want a six or seven
figure income the that’s also attainable
but the but the pathway to each one of
those places is entirely different I
think it’s really powerful that you
start out with setting realistic goals
that’s the number one thing that I feel
like was missing when I started training
out in the field mm-hmm and when I
started doing classes that was the
number one it was very discouraging to
hear how many people were just
heartbroken like I can’t you know I
can’t pay my bills doing this or I’m
renting here I’m doing that and then
when you sit down you ask the right
questions what I always would find out
is goals they are actually making good
money they’re not good stewards of their
money uh-huh or thirds they’re putting
too much money over here over there so
we really need them where they are to
kind of I’m kind of their admin council
council or if you will right so I I let
them know what do you like to do why is
85% of your time doing services that you
actually hate all right I don’t have
repeat business I have a friend that had
salon in West Hollywood
she is closed on Saturdays which is the
busiest day as we know right salon she
are six figures a year and all she does
is color she does no cuts because she
hates cutting hair
mm-hmm so people who come to her go get
their hair cut from another stylist they
wait and get their hair colored with her
and they take time off from work to come
see her right that’s a smart
businessperson because she sat down and
really planned this is the life that I
want these are the steps that I take to
get it and you know she worked a lot of
Saturdays so she got there mm-hmm but it
can be done right and that’s what I like
to bring and I think that was something
that was really missing in our industry
and the other thing Patti no one’s
talked about it we didn’t have a wadis
like I said you know granted education
is huge in this industry but we didn’t
have a lot of hands on either mm-hmm one
of the things that I said that I wanted
to do with more hands-on wanted to meet
the customers find out what treatments
they already do and how can we make them
more what’s the word I’m looking for
more meaningful mm-hmm the therapists
have to be kept in mind to do that your
business owner you have a menu of
services that all of your therapists
dread getting booked for they’re not
going to be talking to their prospective
clients about coming to see them to get
these services so you know just opening
up those owners I see that it really
should be a team environment and giving
them the hands-on support they need has
been so huge our success in this program
and that we’re building yeah you know I
find that such an important point I went
to a a manicure pedicure salon recently
and I was struck by the fact that I
couldn’t get my manicure my pedicure
together they had an area where you went
and you sat and you got your pedicure
and I have another area where you got
your manicure but you couldn’t get them
together and me being that sort of
efficient
time is money kind of person I wanted to
you know I want asked well how come I
can’t do these together and the owner
said to me it’s because it’s not
ergonomically we’ve not found a way for
our staff to do both those service
together so that is ergonomically
positive for the attempt for the person
delivering the service oh wow I you know
I hadn’t heard that
I’ve never heard that before but the
fact that that business owner had
thought that through and has developed
their space around that concept now you
know I can’t say that I necessarily 100%
agree with it but I love the fact that
that that thinking process was there and
you’re helping that you’re helping
business owners to think that kind of
those kinds of things through you know
you have to have a strong team mm-hmm
can’t you can’t just have a couple of
winners and everybody else you know
hates being there right so you know
that’s another thing that we really
bring and get people excited training
Patti is I always say this is 50 percent
morale boost mm-hmm and 50 percent you
know still even though most people don’t
see that in black our training is so
important for people to feel like you
value them enough to invest in their
education that’s so important especially
especially with Millennials so since
sixty percent of our audiences is
consumers and 40 percent is the industry
tell us a little bit the Learning and
Wellness Center is located in Torrance
California where several of the major
freeways come together you do events
there that’s primarily geared for the
professional but tell us a little bit in
this segment tell us a little bit about
some of the various different things
that you’re doing or planning for 2017
that include consumers well you know
consumers really we’re here for you
right professional that’s what we
deliver the services for the consumer
and one of the things initially that
I’ve said that we needed to do was let’s
do try to come to the spa and get a
little treat many treatments right we’re
going to have open houses throughout the
year we get to come we will partner up
with some local spas in the South Bay
area so that you can come see what they
have available also we have a lot of
communication classes other types of
classes that are one-day workshops that
are not necessarily geared totally for
the spa yeah you know anybody can
benefit from that we are members of a
couple of the chamber commerce in
Southern California and
we’ve had Chamber members come to some
of my classes because they just needed
polishing up on a couple of skills and
they always leave and I had one lady
tell me she said this kind of makes me
when we go back to school me of a
thought but I’m so definitely be on the
lookout for that and also product
launches we’ll be doing some product
launch events that are retail products
which were really fun that we will have
available for the consumer market as
well and so tell us a little bit more
about those those classes that are open
to the public what are some of the
content of those well the most popular
ones that we’ve had so far has been the
communications and soft skills for
professionals mm-hmm it’s a one-day
class that I teach it’s very I would say
it’s um it’s very beginner driven but
it’s things that you probably don’t even
think of that
potential employers are looking at for
business associates we look at just
things like top of eye contact body body
positioning things that you might even
realize you do right so that’s a really
important email etiquette if online
etiquette is huge right now because we
live in a social media world and your
social media is representative of you
both professionally and personally so
that’s one of the things that we go over
in that class and it’s really a popular
course we’ll be offering it four times
next year another course that’s really
interesting I’m excited to offer is um a
little brief how to you I’m saying some
fists iPhone photography oh cool
flawless selfie selfie but how do you
take a picture and really get a build
your social audience right you don’t
necessarily have to be a business to do
that mm-hmm so that’s another class
that’s new this year but I’m really
excited to present it because a lot of
people do want to know how can I have a
better social media presence or how I
communicate effectively that way and
then let’s face it these new phones are
replacing the Nikon’s I mean they are
the cameras on these phones are out of
this world you can do so much
and I really wanted to show people how
they can use the features on their phone
they may not realize it that’s great
well I want to sign up for both of those
classes but right now we’re going to
take a break and when we come back we’ll
talk a little bit more about
specifically the industry of wellness
where it is now and some of the things
that a need is seeing from her vantage
point in the industry about wellness and
things that are important that you need
to know so stay with us we’ll be right
back

you like go to the homepage of healthy
life net and click on amazon.com where
positive people and radio unites healthy
life dotnet welcome back this is patty
Schmucker you’re listening to radio a
and B on healthy life net and I have the
distinct honor of having the national
director of education for universal
companies who oversees the Wellness and
learning center in Southern California
with us Anita um tell us a little bit
with the Wellness and learning center
wellness is a huge piece we’ve had those
of you who been listening to us
regularly maybe you listen to some of
the interviews that we’ve done with some
of the other Universal officers Brenda
Elliott was with us earlier this year
she had Karen short last year so go back
and listen to those interviews that’s in
our archives but for our current
audience I need to tell us what the
current definition is of wellness and
what are some of the interesting things
you see going on in that in that segment
well I’ll tell you wellness you’ll hear
that word and you’ll almost always hear
this word the side of it was a full
lipstick okay and I’ll tell you why that
is holistic is the whole person person
spirit and and physically and what’s
trending bigger than anything as people
are understanding that the two are so
connected and that living a balanced
healthy life internally with yourself is
just as important as maintaining
yourself physically right so when we
think about wellness that is really both
size of what we approach with our
education program mm-hmm okay
and so um when we talk about in this day
and age I mean there’s just so much
stress stress at a level I know for
myself personally it’s at a level that
I’ve never experienced in my life and so
what are what are some of the top three
things somebody says what do I do in
this hard time how do I take good care
of myself what is wellness in this day
and age you know it’s funny people don’t
ever ask me what do I do
saying that they find out I have four
kids and I say what how do you do that
I’ll tell you so the very first piece of
advice and I’m just this is the advice
that I would give and how I live my life
is everything that we think is a huge
astronomical deal really is it and we
have to accept the fact that you’re
doing the best that you can that is okay
and that’s the number one way to reduce
stress meditation is an absolute must
people have to put that on their
schedule they have to do it every day it
has to be a part of your everyday life
to maintain wellness you have to take
care of yourself mm-hmm you know I
budget those things but I think with a
lot of Millennials we’re seeing that
trend as well it’s a little bit harder
for maybe to Gen Xers and to do that and
of course the baby boomers but I would
like to see people budget that more
because that’s what’s going to
ultimately makes all the difference
their quality of life in the you know
that’s important point is that is the
budgeting you know you talked in the
earlier segment about one of the things
you’re doing different with the
education that you’re leading is that
you’re helping people to set realistic
goals about their career expectations
but it’s the same thing that applies to
wellness and taking care of ourselves is
setting those realistic time goals the
budgeting of time every day with four
kids and a full-time job how do you go
about doing that is there a set time
every week that you plan out your week
or how do you do that you know for me
and it is once a week I usually do it on
Sunday evening and I didn’t start doing
that to be honest until very recently I
went my very dear friend and Brian I’ve
visited her and she has the kitchen full
of nothing but healthy foods and I was
looking back at my life and I’m like I
have lunch bowls I have fruity pebbles
this crab and I kiss it but she had all
this healthy stuff and I told her I said
wow you really sit down and plan your
higher you know week with food and she
said I do because she said I can either
invest my time and being healthy now or
I will have to invest all of my money in
time in and you know working with
through my sickness later right and that
was so that stood out to me so for the
really did a lifestyle change and I said
I’m going to do this and so every Sunday
night now I plan out my week I know
exactly what we’re having for dinner
every day I know exactly what time I’m
going to stop work and meditate every
school day I noticed so those of you who
are parents you’ll totally relate to it
I have stopped rushing my children my
children want my attention and if I look
at my life what would my 85 year old
self say back to me they would say hug
your children a little longer go ahead
and read that book these things are not
going to regret that right so I’m
constantly reminding myself of that but
yes it takes a lot of planning I always
do it Sunday night and you know it’s
interesting because I’m a big fan of
Franklin Covey for those of you that
aren’t familiar with it’s a long time
ago but you know it’s a book seven
Habits of Highly Effective People and
there have been several other iterations
of it since under different titles but
at the foundation of it is once a week
to sit down and rather than looking at
your life through he the metaphor he
would use is rather than looking at it
through the doughnut hole that you look
at the whole doughnut that you look at
and you plan for the full week ahead the
full month ahead the full you know two
months ahead and look at what are some
of the things that you can do today and
plan for in this week so that you’re not
in the last minute trying to plan for it
you know at the time that you need it
and that’s Sunday I know for me at half
an hour that I take every Sunday to sort
of plan and look out ahead like that and
then the the food prep that’s that’s a
really cool aspect of it as well in
terms of you know anything that I can
chop and dice and put in the glass jars
on son
night so when it comes time to make
dinner that’s already that that hard
stuff is already done that that really
makes a big difference as well so yeah
so tell us about with regards to some of
the education I know that just recently
there was the global wellness summit
that was held here in the United States
are there some specific things that are
coming up with regards to wellness that
we haven’t seen that you’re gonna be
that you’re excited about talking about
in 2018 yeah you know one of the things
that I don’t know how familiar this
audience will be but if you should be
very familiar it’s manual lymphatic
drainage therapy which is which are very
wellness oriented very whole person
therapies will be offering those for
them for professionals will also be
offering some yoga at the center that
will be for consumers and professionals
which is really good it’s going to be a
community yoga which we’re going to be
doing I’m very excited about that and
I’m very very excited to say we’re going
to be hosting sound back I don’t know
I’ve never been so found that I have not
been to a sound bath basically it’s
excited meditation with vibrational
bowls and the entire room you sit in the
room and then you have these um
scientist nurses that kind of Gong on
the bowl and it makes different sounds
that you have these different effects on
the body and then put your body and sort
of completely say to state of relaxation
alright well hope hold that thought
because we’re going to come back to this
I want to hear more about this we’re
going to take another break and when we
come back we’ll spend the next segment
just talking about some of this

hey thanks for staying with us this is
Patti Schmucker here at Radio A&B; on
healthy life net I am here with a
national director of education for the
universal companies Anita
Lumpkin an Anita one’s on here in
Southern California the universal
companies a wellness and learning center
where a variety of different types of
educational programs go on primarily
focused on the spa and wellness industry
but also many and more educational
events that are happening that are open
to the public and Anita before we took
our break you were telling us about the
sound baths so bowls and each bowl has a
different resonance of sound how is that
healing for our body can you tell us a
little bit about that yeah well actually
got the experience of births and I’m not
a therapist that conducts the trains but
I do have a phenomenal group of
therapists are coming to do it but so
your body responds to different
vibrations and so having all of these
different sound bowls going at this at
the same time really helps you go into
what’s called a parasympathetic or theta
state and all of these experiences it
helps your sensory levels and I you know
unfortunately I’m not a therapist that
does it but you’ve got to check it out
it was the coolest thing ever
for somebody like myself who’s never
sleeps I fell asleep
Wow you know you’re right I mean that it
would make sense that the vibrations are
resonating with the parasympathetic
nervous system and if you can impact
that part of the body then that connects
everything with regards to the neurons
firing and all that kind of stuff that
it logically makes great sense as to as
to why it works so tell are there on a I
know that you’ve got your finger on the
pulse of innovative
things that are happening with regards
to product and education in the wellness
field there anything else that you’re
particularly excited about I absolutely
love the oxygen shares I think those
things are so amazing they’re very very
innovative right now and you know a
division of our company is fine quit and
we are working with a manufacturer a
vendor who carries 102 share and it’s
just the coolest thing ever it is a
completely wellness designed chair that
again it’s about reinforcing the body to
be stress-free if you can heal yourself
and so it’s a chair that you cuddle I’ve
never seen it so tell it can you keep
okay and then it’s just clear healthy
oxygen Golding and they actually
launched it a global wellness last year
okay but this year they’ve been
completely redesigned and it’s ready for
market it’s amazing we will have one at
the center so at one of our events we
will definitely invite the public and
professionals to come in and experience
that and is that something that someone
would find obviously at the universal
companies but is that something that as
spa or a doctor’s office would have or
is it something that somebody could buy
and take home a lot of Microsoft centers
you know I think I won’t name drop but
you know wellness oriented centers so
we’re you know exercise facilities you
can name drop we don’t mind names you
know in Southern California else we are
really good resource for those types of
things and Equinox okay
I’m Equinox is always cutting edge on
those types of things and they’re just a
phenomenal experience but there’s others
uh-huh and an excellent fit for that
type of market Club spas are great right
or wellness communities you know we’re
seeing a lot of growth in that area
especially and baby boomers mature and
leave the workforce right they want to
it they are living very long they’re
healthy
active that’s right
and so they are becoming members of
these wellness communities and these
type these are the types of features and
services that they offer
very innovative and cutting-edge
state-of-the-art and what and what I
love too on the on the product side is
it was the innovation that’s taking
place with understanding how the body
functions so I know if I know in product
development we are seeing more and more
new formulations if you in fact I tell
people if you’re looking for product
look for product that’s not more than 10
years old because what we know about the
body today how the cell receives
information that’s topically applied and
I say information whether it’s a cream
or a serum or whatever that’s all
information for the body and if it is if
it’s if it’s encased properly then it
has the capacity to inform the cell and
we didn’t know that a decade or 15 years
ago and so when you look at products
that are you know in eighty
five-year-old formula I don’t really
want to use an 85 because the
ingredients that are in that formula and
the way that product was put together it
there we just know so much more and the
pendulum is actually swung in such a way
that the quality of ingredients have
increased the safety of ingredients have
increased so that’s probably that’s one
of the things I get really excited about
is there anything else that you’ve seen
lately that really stands out to you as
being part of the future yeah I think
we’re going to see less and less water
in formulations Oh interesting
something that I’ve noticed more and
more especially in the airfares you know
I’m an ingredient junkie as you know
look at the label always say whether or
not something’s going to work for me
based on that ingredient dick but I’m
noticing a large shift in a lot less
water because people don’t
want the harsh preservatives right so
you’re seeing a lot more I don’t once
they do it yourself but a little bit
more effort driven perfect now because
people want a clean formula that works
and even in the very I would say result
for you in the skincare segment I’m
still seeing a lot less water when I
think of the serum companies now that
are higher on base mm-hmm and they’re
leaving out the water and for our
audience to help us to understand why is
it beneficial not to have water in the
product the obvious is that it’s not as
diluted and you’re not buying you know I
mean most liquid products 80 percent of
what’s in the jar is water so what is
what are some of the other reasons why
water not having water in the product is
beneficial you know other than diluting
and the overall formulation that they
want is with water and you have an
expiration date mm-hmm
you are going to have to the product has
water in it you’re going to have to have
some type of preservative system and
depending on what else you have in there
you may have to have a pretty harsh
preservative in this do not naturally
and work with our bodies they have
negative impacts right right consumer
estrogenix some of them are are just
they cause other skin inflammation
issues actually increase aging so
there’s a lot of bad nasty things that
go along with some preservative systems
right and that’s and that’s the key when
you take water and you put inorganic
material inside the water and you close
it in a container bacteria will form
that’s that is that’s that is chemistry
that’s basic chemistry so when you have
water you have to have preservatives and
there are many preservatives not all but
there are many preservatives that can be
very harsh so all right that’s you know
would keep for 20 years I’d be like
nothing smells the same okay right
that’s right
that’s right absolutely all right well
we’re going to take our last break and
when we come back we’ll talk a little
bit more about innovation and Anita’s
plan
Jen’s for 2018 so stay with us we’ll be
right back

hi there it’s Pattie smoker here at
Radio a and beyond healthy life net
thanks for staying with us I’m here with
the national director of education for
universal companies Anita Lumpkin and we
have been talking about this exciting
wellness and learning center that
universal companies developed here in
Southern California and Anita has some
exciting plans for 2018 tell us Anita
what’s going to be happening one of the
most exciting things for me is learning
to start offering classes from our
corporate headquarters in Virginia Wow
to Sicily – whining sir of course
Virginia will not have as much of a
catalog of classes as the West Coast but
just being able to make it more
accessible
my goal for 2018 is to really let people
know Universal is serious and we are
committed about delivering education to
our customers and raising the bar for
this industry we see this industry not
as a luxury or very limited and we see
it as an essential part of being a well
person this is a lifestyle and we really
want to educate that and put that into
our customers hands so that they can
deliver the best quality to their
customers and you then that’s really the
one of the greatest things about
universal companies one of the reasons
it’s one of my favorite favorite clients
to work with is that it really is making
a difference in the quality of life for
people and giving them the tools to
understand the the spa and wellness
professional whether it’s your doctor
your dermatologist your cosmetic surgeon
these are all customers of Universal and
you’re really keeping the tools and the
education in front of them that allows
them to offer that cutting edge can a
services absolutely I one thing I really
truly want our customers to be
successful when their success
they are in a position to do good for
humanity and that and that is just the
truth when we are better off in our own
lives we’re able to do better for people
who need us to be better for them right
and so that’s what it’s a chain reaction
we can hold your hand and make you a
successful business owner or successful
practitioner you’re going to pay that
forward and it’s going to keep going and
keep going we will be a true industry
that funds light and so the education
that’s offered I know you do not only
you do business classes along with skill
based classes tell us a little bit about
the skill based classes that they are
that you’re offering in 2018 well you
know one of the highest demand classes
that we get is last sentence oh and it’s
something that if you’ve ever had a
really poorly done set of lots of
sentence do you understand how important
it is that you go to a very trained
skilled professional to get them done
one of the big things that I kept
hearing from the special immunity was
well my sons don’t like it because it
damages their lasses and I would
immediately say well then you need to
come and take this class because they
shouldn’t have any damage mm-hmm and
then once I see that it’s just really um
most people who see me that’s the first
thing they say oh my gosh our lasses
right like they’re only mine because I
bought them that’s a very very continues
to be a very popular skills class also
makeup is I’m getting more and more
demands on makeup makeup is a very good
way for an esthetician to make a little
extra income and really deliver a WoW
service mm-hmm their clients and just
watching people get up from a makeover
it’s just truly truly heartwarming they
they’re like oh my goodness I look
beautiful and you think no you’re
beautiful when you sat down and just
highlighters a little bit and what I
love and I love that there’s more and
more healthy makeup that the that it’s
it’s an extension of the skin care and
it used to be that
an aesthetician we shied away from
applying makeup right after a skin
service because we wanted the skin to
breathe but today there really is some
beautiful beautiful products that can be
used after a skin service that allows
the skin to breathe and still allows a
person to go back to work after a quick
service or to feel good about doing
makeup you know one of the things one of
the products that I see thawne is a
foundation that’s designed to use post
peels you know when people get a
chemical peel they don’t want to be red
for seven days but not wear makeup is
you know you don’t want people to see
that so we haven’t found a stand excuse
people how to use immediately after the
field so that your skin looks flawless
and it has a growth factor in it the
health of skin heal faster and can you
tell us can you tell us the name of that
product yeah it is oxygen etics okay
then we distribute it of course and it’s
a phenomenal product it has a service A
in it which is a healing agent a very
lightweight I just can’t say enough good
things though I’m we’re really I’m very
blessed board for a company that’s out
products um very well and on makeup
brands I’m very pleased you can’t always
say that when you go into your just
random juice one take a look at their
portfolio but ours for clean formulas
they’re all serving free yeah those are
things that are really important to us
as a community of skin lovers clean as
it possibly can right right well I know
at the top of the show when I introduced
you I indicated that you have that
you’re a mama for lover of art and
lipsticks and long lashes tell us why it
was about the lashes how did the lashes
become such a passion for you you know
from me I have pretty long glasses
naturally anyway but I’m 70 whole life
and I you know when I started doing
lasses was when I had them done
perfectly I had a really nice thing of
mine who had been coming in and coming
in she said you know what let me do your
lashes
I think you would look so good with lots
of senses I never wore anything except
one part of my spare my whole life and I
said okay I love it in my lashes and
instantly my face was Senator my eyes
would just open and I would I thought I
was so much younger and I didn’t look
tired and I went home that night and
I’ll never forget my youngest daughter
she was oh my goodness mommy your eyes
are so pretty now so I said well you
know what from now on it’s lasses every
day and it has that effect on everyone
that I’ve even put a shtetl ashes on
Patti right so immediately you feel
younger youthful more beautiful and then
you just use an ass better you treat
people better well Anita thank you it’s

american-made beauty calm my guest today
is a woman who has inspired me in many
ways one of the reasons is is that as a
young woman myself growing up in the
beauty industry I was able to really
adapt and learn and be able to try all
sorts of different things in my career
and being a great student allowing
myself to climb the ladder quickly my
guest today
Anita Lumpkin who is the national
director of education for universal
companies is that type of person and has
really done a phenomenal amount of
things in her career to advance herself
as well as advancing the industry she’s
responsible for developing and managing
a training programs for
over 113 spas she creates protocols and
treatment menus she directs the
universal company’s wellness and
learning center here in Southern
California she contributes four national
publications the area of professional
development and holistic therapies she
has a PhD in sociology and over ten
years experience in the spa industry
anita is a mom of four lover of art and
lipstick and of long lashes
welcome Anita I’m delighted to have you
with us today love talking about
education and beauty and all of it well
so I need to give us so you’re really
one of those pivotal people in our
industry that’s shaping the way that not
only is the industry evolving because of
the type of education that you’re that
you’re doing but also helping to shape
the way young professionals in our
industry acquire education so let’s take
a step back and talk a little bit about
you personally tell us how you found
yourself in this pitiful position of a
being in this position with the beauty
industry you know it’s funny I I started
in this industry the same way that I
feel like a lot of the people on me
started out I did it as a way turn a
little extra money to put myself through
school with the goal to do something
else and I fell completely in love the
beauty industry was already second
nature because my mom was a
cosmetologist so it was you know this is
I grew up in that world I have pictures
of me inside of a playpen in a salon it
really has been second nature that being
said I fell in love with massage first
just being able to really connect to the
client and just they became my friends
mm-hmm when I started at Universal I
started in the sales team and it and it
really grew from there I was going to
school
work in putting myself through college
as a young mom and I knew I always
wanted to be a teacher I loved watching
someone their eyes open and the glow
they get when they learn something new
love being a mentor so I always knew
that was what I was supposed to do and
just being able to match the two
together in my role at Universal
companies has been phenomenal for me
because there’s such a need in this
industry in particular prior you know
working with the company I work with now
right so but will you grew up you were
in the salon and exposed did you go
straight from high school into college I
did I didn’t even take three months off
you know I graduated in May and then but
did the summer session the late summer
session at a community college first
uh-huh
right yeah and and so when you started
college did you what was the what was
the goal what was your pursuit at that
point you know believe it or not I
wanted to a journalist okay started
school I wanted to be a journalist and I
wanted to do conflict areas so I you
know how do you how you end up in the
video industry but anyway being a war
journalist and well that didn’t really
settle well with me when second year in
college I wanted to be a humanitarian
and activist and so that’s what I really
started shifting my focus to what I
ultimately got my post grad degree in
with the sociology really wanted to
learn why people do the things they do
why why are there so many demographic
groups but what challenges these groups
have and so on and that’s made me a very
good educator because I can work with a
lot of different types of people
and leave them where they are right and
it probably quite fascinating if you if
you approached it to begin with in terms
of being an activist and then looking at
human behavior that probably gave you
great insight into how people take care
of themselves I mean I can really see
that connection there
there’s so many connections with you
know people are really longer now
Americans than ever before and they’re
not just living like by the years
they’re surviving fonder
uh-huh and it’s amazing to me how just
knowing the different demographics and
and accessibility to good wellness
practices good food good medicine you
know these things are all a part of a
healthy lifestyle right so when you work
in this industry we know that when you
take care of yourself you’re a healthier
person right you’re going to live longer
you’re going to have better
relationships so this is all connected
and so when you graduated from college
was it with the idea did you have a
particular career that you were going
after yes I wanted to work originally
with order work originally with a
university to teach mm-hmm that was my
number one goal and into what happened I
really fell in love with our customers
like what keeps me going and you know
every day is that far that aesthetician
that massage therapist says that Anita
since you came and trained our boss
we’ve hit our goal you know we tripled
our goals mm-hmm we’re now you know
we’re now number one or reason or so on
and so forth that’s what makes a
difference in my day mm-hmm and so from
our audience that don’t doesn’t no
universal tell us a little bit about who
Universal is and and what was your first
job there essentially we are a
distributor of products for the Wellness
boss you need salon industry mm-hmm we
carry everything that you need from when
you first think about opening your
business to your the year that you
retire and give that business to about
pass it down or sell it when we do it
all mm-hmm and one of the things that
really sets us apart is our quality of
education we see education as not a an
optional thing it is a essential piece
of your professional development an
essential piece to women
be successful and being able to provide
education to your staff in this industry
howdy as you know it’s really
challenging because there is not a lot
of quality education out there a lot of
the education is very brand driven right
when when you’re talking about brand
driven education you’re talking more
about a sales pitch and not a skill set
that they’re leaving with right right
one of the things that I wanted to do
and I was very specific when I accepted
the job was we have to make education
education hmm when you go to a
university although you know they’re
going to sell you hoodies and stuff
that’s of course good but they’re really
teaching you to take a skill set away
you can apply and become more successful
with and know how to interact with in
your field and that’s what the education
that we provide is so we it’s
professional development you come and
you learn a skill set in explain
education but it’s so much more than
that and you know what I think is really
exciting and about universal companies
in your role in particular is their I
don’t really think that there are many
places in this industry that has someone
with your level of academic
accomplishments that’s really shaping
the way education is being delivered and
so tell us a little bit about how when
you talk about wanting to make education
educational and developing a skill set
what are some of the things that you
bring into that educational environment
so that people are really walking away
with tangible skills now the first thing
I’m sorry very key is that we teach I
teach people how to develop goals
mm-hmm you know when you are in school
especially in beauty industry a lot of
times what I hear they have a very
unrealistic income expectation what
happens is they’re they work the first
one or two years and you know our
industry unfortunately has a very high
dropout rate it’s which industries
because their expectations are not set
properly right know how to set goals
didn’t know how to get business and so
on and so that’s the first thing mmm-hmm
I think that university levels do that
really well because they do so much
analysis behind it right right
free doesn’t really do that well you
know when you go into university they
you you have to talk to a counselor and
the first thing they tell you is okay
this is your expected first year salary
that you were you probably will on your
going into engineering they’re going to
tell you depending on where you live
this is an actual earn so it’s open we
don’t do that in a beauty school hmm
I’m asking some of the the income
expectations and I’m thinking to myself
wow that’s just not realistic but if
this is what you want to earn let me
show you how you can get that right and
I’ll show you exactly what you have to
put in to get that number and that turns
into a goal instead of an expectation
uh-huh which is really powerful because
there there really is a difference
between if you’re looking to enter this
industry and just have a livable wage
that this is an industry that can
provide that but if you’re in this
industry and you want a six or seven
figure income the that’s also attainable
but the but the pathway to each one of
those places is entirely different I
think it’s really powerful that you
start out with setting realistic goals
that’s the number one thing that I feel
like was missing when I started training
out in the field mm-hmm and when I
started doing classes that was the
number one it was very discouraging to
hear how many people were just
heartbroken like I can’t you know I
can’t pay my bills doing this or I’m
renting here I’m doing that and then
when you sit down you ask the right
questions what I always would find out
is goals they are actually making good
money they’re not good stewards of their
money uh-huh or thirds they’re putting
too much money over here over there so
we really need them where they are to
kind of I’m kind of their admin council
council or if you will right so I I let
them know what do you like to do why is
85% of your time doing services that you
actually hate all right I don’t have
repeat business I have a friend that had
salon in West Hollywood
she is closed on Saturdays which is the
busiest day as we know right salon she
are six figures a year and all she does
is color she does no cuts because she
hates cutting hair
mm-hmm so people who come to her go get
their hair cut from another stylist they
wait and get their hair colored with her
and they take time off from work to come
see her right that’s a smart
businessperson because she sat down and
really planned this is the life that I
want these are the steps that I take to
get it and you know she worked a lot of
Saturdays so she got there mm-hmm but it
can be done right and that’s what I like
to bring and I think that was something
that was really missing in our industry
and the other thing Patti no one’s
talked about it we didn’t have a wadis
like I said you know granted education
is huge in this industry but we didn’t
have a lot of hands on either mm-hmm one
of the things that I said that I wanted
to do with more hands-on wanted to meet
the customers find out what treatments
they already do and how can we make them
more what’s the word I’m looking for
more meaningful mm-hmm the therapists
have to be kept in mind to do that your
business owner you have a menu of
services that all of your therapists
dread getting booked for they’re not
going to be talking to their prospective
clients about coming to see them to get
these services so you know just opening
up those owners I see that it really
should be a team environment and giving
them the hands-on support they need has
been so huge our success in this program
and that we’re building yeah you know I
find that such an important point I went
to a a manicure pedicure salon recently
and I was struck by the fact that I
couldn’t get my manicure my pedicure
together they had an area where you went
and you sat and you got your pedicure
and I have another area where you got
your manicure but you couldn’t get them
together and me being that sort of
efficient
time is money kind of person I wanted to
you know I want asked well how come I
can’t do these together and the owner
said to me it’s because it’s not
ergonomically we’ve not found a way for
our staff to do both those service
together so that is ergonomically
positive for the attempt for the person
delivering the service oh wow I you know
I hadn’t heard that
I’ve never heard that before but the
fact that that business owner had
thought that through and has developed
their space around that concept now you
know I can’t say that I necessarily 100%
agree with it but I love the fact that
that that thinking process was there and
you’re helping that you’re helping
business owners to think that kind of
those kinds of things through you know
you have to have a strong team mm-hmm
can’t you can’t just have a couple of
winners and everybody else you know
hates being there right so you know
that’s another thing that we really
bring and get people excited training
Patti is I always say this is 50 percent
morale boost mm-hmm and 50 percent you
know still even though most people don’t
see that in black our training is so
important for people to feel like you
value them enough to invest in their
education that’s so important especially
especially with Millennials so since
sixty percent of our audiences is
consumers and 40 percent is the industry
tell us a little bit the Learning and
Wellness Center is located in Torrance
California where several of the major
freeways come together you do events
there that’s primarily geared for the
professional but tell us a little bit in
this segment tell us a little bit about
some of the various different things
that you’re doing or planning for 2017
that include consumers well you know
consumers really we’re here for you
right professional that’s what we
deliver the services for the consumer
and one of the things initially that
I’ve said that we needed to do was let’s
do try to come to the spa and get a
little treat many treatments right we’re
going to have open houses throughout the
year we get to come we will partner up
with some local spas in the South Bay
area so that you can come see what they
have available also we have a lot of
communication classes other types of
classes that are one-day workshops that
are not necessarily geared totally for
the spa yeah you know anybody can
benefit from that we are members of a
couple of the chamber commerce in
Southern California and
we’ve had Chamber members come to some
of my classes because they just needed
polishing up on a couple of skills and
they always leave and I had one lady
tell me she said this kind of makes me
when we go back to school me of a
thought but I’m so definitely be on the
lookout for that and also product
launches we’ll be doing some product
launch events that are retail products
which were really fun that we will have
available for the consumer market as
well and so tell us a little bit more
about those those classes that are open
to the public what are some of the
content of those well the most popular
ones that we’ve had so far has been the
communications and soft skills for
professionals mm-hmm it’s a one-day
class that I teach it’s very I would say
it’s um it’s very beginner driven but
it’s things that you probably don’t even
think of that
potential employers are looking at for
business associates we look at just
things like top of eye contact body body
positioning things that you might even
realize you do right so that’s a really
important email etiquette if online
etiquette is huge right now because we
live in a social media world and your
social media is representative of you
both professionally and personally so
that’s one of the things that we go over
in that class and it’s really a popular
course we’ll be offering it four times
next year another course that’s really
interesting I’m excited to offer is um a
little brief how to you I’m saying some
fists iPhone photography oh cool
flawless selfie selfie but how do you
take a picture and really get a build
your social audience right you don’t
necessarily have to be a business to do
that mm-hmm so that’s another class
that’s new this year but I’m really
excited to present it because a lot of
people do want to know how can I have a
better social media presence or how I
communicate effectively that way and
then let’s face it these new phones are
replacing the Nikon’s I mean they are
the cameras on these phones are out of
this world you can do so much
and I really wanted to show people how
they can use the features on their phone
they may not realize it that’s great
well I want to sign up for both of those
classes but right now we’re going to
take a break and when we come back we’ll
talk a little bit more about
specifically the industry of wellness
where it is now and some of the things
that a need is seeing from her vantage
point in the industry about wellness and
things that are important that you need
to know so stay with us we’ll be right
back

what does healthy life dotnet and
amazon.com have in common well they’re
both available on the Internet they both
give great value but most important most
of our positive program hosts and guests
are accomplished authors and their books
are available from you got at amazon.com
now it even gets better than that
because when you’re listening on air to
a healthy life net host or guests you
can go directly to amazon.com and you
could order your book while you’re still
listening to your favorite healthy life
net program so when you hear an author
you like go to the homepage of healthy
life net and click on amazon.com where
positive people and radio unites healthy
life dotnet welcome back this is patty
Schmucker you’re listening to radio a
and B on healthy life net and I have the
distinct honor of having the national
director of education for universal
companies who oversees the Wellness and
learning center in Southern California
with us Anita um tell us a little bit
with the Wellness and learning center
wellness is a huge piece we’ve had those
of you who been listening to us
regularly maybe you listen to some of
the interviews that we’ve done with some
of the other Universal officers Brenda
Elliott was with us earlier this year
she had Karen short last year so go back
and listen to those interviews that’s in
our archives but for our current
audience I need to tell us what the
current definition is of wellness and
what are some of the interesting things
you see going on in that in that segment
well I’ll tell you wellness you’ll hear
that word and you’ll almost always hear
this word the side of it was a full
lipstick okay and I’ll tell you why that
is holistic is the whole person person
spirit and and physically and what’s
trending bigger than anything as people
are understanding that the two are so
connected and that living a balanced
healthy life internally with yourself is
just as important as maintaining
yourself physically right so when we
think about wellness that is really both
size of what we approach with our
education program mm-hmm okay
and so um when we talk about in this day
and age I mean there’s just so much
stress stress at a level I know for
myself personally it’s at a level that
I’ve never experienced in my life and so
what are what are some of the top three
things somebody says what do I do in
this hard time how do I take good care
of myself what is wellness in this day
and age you know it’s funny people don’t
ever ask me what do I do
saying that they find out I have four
kids and I say what how do you do that
I’ll tell you so the very first piece of
advice and I’m just this is the advice
that I would give and how I live my life
is everything that we think is a huge
astronomical deal really is it and we
have to accept the fact that you’re
doing the best that you can that is okay
and that’s the number one way to reduce
stress meditation is an absolute must
people have to put that on their
schedule they have to do it every day it
has to be a part of your everyday life
to maintain wellness you have to take
care of yourself mm-hmm you know I
budget those things but I think with a
lot of Millennials we’re seeing that
trend as well it’s a little bit harder
for maybe to Gen Xers and to do that and
of course the baby boomers but I would
like to see people budget that more
because that’s what’s going to
ultimately makes all the difference
their quality of life in the you know
that’s important point is that is the
budgeting you know you talked in the
earlier segment about one of the things
you’re doing different with the
education that you’re leading is that
you’re helping people to set realistic
goals about their career expectations
but it’s the same thing that applies to
wellness and taking care of ourselves is
setting those realistic time goals the
budgeting of time every day with four
kids and a full-time job how do you go
about doing that is there a set time
every week that you plan out your week
or how do you do that you know for me
and it is once a week I usually do it on
Sunday evening and I didn’t start doing
that to be honest until very recently I
went my very dear friend and Brian I’ve
visited her and she has the kitchen full
of nothing but healthy foods and I was
looking back at my life and I’m like I
have lunch bowls I have fruity pebbles
this crab and I kiss it but she had all
this healthy stuff and I told her I said
wow you really sit down and plan your
higher you know week with food and she
said I do because she said I can either
invest my time and being healthy now or
I will have to invest all of my money in
time in and you know working with
through my sickness later right and that
was so that stood out to me so for the
really did a lifestyle change and I said
I’m going to do this and so every Sunday
night now I plan out my week I know
exactly what we’re having for dinner
every day I know exactly what time I’m
going to stop work and meditate every
school day I noticed so those of you who
are parents you’ll totally relate to it
I have stopped rushing my children my
children want my attention and if I look
at my life what would my 85 year old
self say back to me they would say hug
your children a little longer go ahead
and read that book these things are not
going to regret that right so I’m
constantly reminding myself of that but
yes it takes a lot of planning I always
do it Sunday night and you know it’s
interesting because I’m a big fan of
Franklin Covey for those of you that
aren’t familiar with it’s a long time
ago but you know it’s a book seven
Habits of Highly Effective People and
there have been several other iterations
of it since under different titles but
at the foundation of it is once a week
to sit down and rather than looking at
your life through he the metaphor he
would use is rather than looking at it
through the doughnut hole that you look
at the whole doughnut that you look at
and you plan for the full week ahead the
full month ahead the full you know two
months ahead and look at what are some
of the things that you can do today and
plan for in this week so that you’re not
in the last minute trying to plan for it
you know at the time that you need it
and that’s Sunday I know for me at half
an hour that I take every Sunday to sort
of plan and look out ahead like that and
then the the food prep that’s that’s a
really cool aspect of it as well in
terms of you know anything that I can
chop and dice and put in the glass jars
on son
night so when it comes time to make
dinner that’s already that that hard
stuff is already done that that really
makes a big difference as well so yeah
so tell us about with regards to some of
the education I know that just recently
there was the global wellness summit
that was held here in the United States
are there some specific things that are
coming up with regards to wellness that
we haven’t seen that you’re gonna be
that you’re excited about talking about
in 2018 yeah you know one of the things
that I don’t know how familiar this
audience will be but if you should be
very familiar it’s manual lymphatic
drainage therapy which is which are very
wellness oriented very whole person
therapies will be offering those for
them for professionals will also be
offering some yoga at the center that
will be for consumers and professionals
which is really good it’s going to be a
community yoga which we’re going to be
doing I’m very excited about that and
I’m very very excited to say we’re going
to be hosting sound back I don’t know
I’ve never been so found that I have not
been to a sound bath basically it’s
excited meditation with vibrational
bowls and the entire room you sit in the
room and then you have these um
scientist nurses that kind of Gong on
the bowl and it makes different sounds
that you have these different effects on
the body and then put your body and sort
of completely say to state of relaxation
alright well hope hold that thought
because we’re going to come back to this
I want to hear more about this we’re
going to take another break and when we
come back we’ll spend the next segment
just talking about some of this
innovation I in both education and

hey thanks for staying with us this is
Patti Schmucker here at Radio A&B; on
healthy life net I am here with a
national director of education for the
universal companies Anita
Lumpkin an Anita one’s on here in
Southern California the universal
companies a wellness and learning center
where a variety of different types of
educational programs go on primarily
focused on the spa and wellness industry
but also many and more educational
events that are happening that are open
to the public and Anita before we took
our break you were telling us about the
sound baths so bowls and each bowl has a
different resonance of sound how is that
healing for our body can you tell us a
little bit about that yeah well actually
got the experience of births and I’m not
a therapist that conducts the trains but
I do have a phenomenal group of
therapists are coming to do it but so
your body responds to different
vibrations and so having all of these
different sound bowls going at this at
the same time really helps you go into
what’s called a parasympathetic or theta
state and all of these experiences it
helps your sensory levels and I you know
unfortunately I’m not a therapist that
does it but you’ve got to check it out
it was the coolest thing ever
for somebody like myself who’s never
sleeps I fell asleep
Wow you know you’re right I mean that it
would make sense that the vibrations are
resonating with the parasympathetic
nervous system and if you can impact
that part of the body then that connects
everything with regards to the neurons
firing and all that kind of stuff that
it logically makes great sense as to as
to why it works so tell are there on a I
know that you’ve got your finger on the
pulse of innovative
things that are happening with regards
to product and education in the wellness
field there anything else that you’re
particularly excited about I absolutely
love the oxygen shares I think those
things are so amazing they’re very very
innovative right now and you know a
division of our company is fine quit and
we are working with a manufacturer a
vendor who carries 102 share and it’s
just the coolest thing ever it is a
completely wellness designed chair that
again it’s about reinforcing the body to
be stress-free if you can heal yourself
and so it’s a chair that you cuddle I’ve
never seen it so tell it can you keep
okay and then it’s just clear healthy
oxygen Golding and they actually
launched it a global wellness last year
okay but this year they’ve been
completely redesigned and it’s ready for
market it’s amazing we will have one at
the center so at one of our events we
will definitely invite the public and
professionals to come in and experience
that and is that something that someone
would find obviously at the universal
companies but is that something that as
spa or a doctor’s office would have or
is it something that somebody could buy
and take home a lot of Microsoft centers
you know I think I won’t name drop but
you know wellness oriented centers so
we’re you know exercise facilities you
can name drop we don’t mind names you
know in Southern California else we are
really good resource for those types of
things and Equinox okay
I’m Equinox is always cutting edge on
those types of things and they’re just a
phenomenal experience but there’s others
uh-huh and an excellent fit for that
type of market Club spas are great right
or wellness communities you know we’re
seeing a lot of growth in that area
especially and baby boomers mature and
leave the workforce right they want to
it they are living very long they’re
healthy
active that’s right
and so they are becoming members of
these wellness communities and these
type these are the types of features and
services that they offer
very innovative and cutting-edge
state-of-the-art and what and what I
love too on the on the product side is
it was the innovation that’s taking
place with understanding how the body
functions so I know if I know in product
development we are seeing more and more
new formulations if you in fact I tell
people if you’re looking for product
look for product that’s not more than 10
years old because what we know about the
body today how the cell receives
information that’s topically applied and
I say information whether it’s a cream
or a serum or whatever that’s all
information for the body and if it is if
it’s if it’s encased properly then it
has the capacity to inform the cell and
we didn’t know that a decade or 15 years
ago and so when you look at products
that are you know in eighty
five-year-old formula I don’t really
want to use an 85 because the
ingredients that are in that formula and
the way that product was put together it
there we just know so much more and the
pendulum is actually swung in such a way
that the quality of ingredients have
increased the safety of ingredients have
increased so that’s probably that’s one
of the things I get really excited about
is there anything else that you’ve seen
lately that really stands out to you as
being part of the future yeah I think
we’re going to see less and less water
in formulations Oh interesting
something that I’ve noticed more and
more especially in the airfares you know
I’m an ingredient junkie as you know
look at the label always say whether or
not something’s going to work for me
based on that ingredient dick but I’m
noticing a large shift in a lot less
water because people don’t
want the harsh preservatives right so
you’re seeing a lot more I don’t once
they do it yourself but a little bit
more effort driven perfect now because
people want a clean formula that works
and even in the very I would say result
for you in the skincare segment I’m
still seeing a lot less water when I
think of the serum companies now that
are higher on base mm-hmm and they’re
leaving out the water and for our
audience to help us to understand why is
it beneficial not to have water in the
product the obvious is that it’s not as
diluted and you’re not buying you know I
mean most liquid products 80 percent of
what’s in the jar is water so what is
what are some of the other reasons why
water not having water in the product is
beneficial you know other than diluting
and the overall formulation that they
want is with water and you have an
expiration date mm-hmm
you are going to have to the product has
water in it you’re going to have to have
some type of preservative system and
depending on what else you have in there
you may have to have a pretty harsh
preservative in this do not naturally
and work with our bodies they have
negative impacts right right consumer
estrogenix some of them are are just
they cause other skin inflammation
issues actually increase aging so
there’s a lot of bad nasty things that
go along with some preservative systems
right and that’s and that’s the key when
you take water and you put inorganic
material inside the water and you close
it in a container bacteria will form
that’s that is that’s that is chemistry
that’s basic chemistry so when you have
water you have to have preservatives and
there are many preservatives not all but
there are many preservatives that can be
very harsh so all right that’s you know
would keep for 20 years I’d be like
nothing smells the same okay right
that’s right
that’s right absolutely all right well
we’re going to take our last break and
when we come back we’ll talk a little
bit more about innovation and Anita’s
plan
Jen’s for 2018 so stay with us we’ll be
right back

hi there it’s Pattie smoker here at
Radio a and beyond healthy life net
thanks for staying with us I’m here with
the national director of education for
universal companies Anita Lumpkin and we
have been talking about this exciting
wellness and learning center that
universal companies developed here in
Southern California and Anita has some
exciting plans for 2018 tell us Anita
what’s going to be happening one of the
most exciting things for me is learning
to start offering classes from our
corporate headquarters in Virginia Wow
to Sicily – whining sir of course
Virginia will not have as much of a
catalog of classes as the West Coast but
just being able to make it more
accessible
my goal for 2018 is to really let people
know Universal is serious and we are
committed about delivering education to
our customers and raising the bar for
this industry we see this industry not
as a luxury or very limited and we see
it as an essential part of being a well
person this is a lifestyle and we really
want to educate that and put that into
our customers hands so that they can
deliver the best quality to their
customers and you then that’s really the
one of the greatest things about
universal companies one of the reasons
it’s one of my favorite favorite clients
to work with is that it really is making
a difference in the quality of life for
people and giving them the tools to
understand the the spa and wellness
professional whether it’s your doctor
your dermatologist your cosmetic surgeon
these are all customers of Universal and
you’re really keeping the tools and the
education in front of them that allows
them to offer that cutting edge can a
services absolutely I one thing I really
truly want our customers to be
successful when their success
they are in a position to do good for
humanity and that and that is just the
truth when we are better off in our own
lives we’re able to do better for people
who need us to be better for them right
and so that’s what it’s a chain reaction
we can hold your hand and make you a
successful business owner or successful
practitioner you’re going to pay that
forward and it’s going to keep going and
keep going we will be a true industry
that funds light and so the education
that’s offered I know you do not only
you do business classes along with skill
based classes tell us a little bit about
the skill based classes that they are
that you’re offering in 2018 well you
know one of the highest demand classes
that we get is last sentence oh and it’s
something that if you’ve ever had a
really poorly done set of lots of
sentence do you understand how important
it is that you go to a very trained
skilled professional to get them done
one of the big things that I kept
hearing from the special immunity was
well my sons don’t like it because it
damages their lasses and I would
immediately say well then you need to
come and take this class because they
shouldn’t have any damage mm-hmm and
then once I see that it’s just really um
most people who see me that’s the first
thing they say oh my gosh our lasses
right like they’re only mine because I
bought them that’s a very very continues
to be a very popular skills class also
makeup is I’m getting more and more
demands on makeup makeup is a very good
way for an esthetician to make a little
extra income and really deliver a WoW
service mm-hmm their clients and just
watching people get up from a makeover
it’s just truly truly heartwarming they
they’re like oh my goodness I look
beautiful and you think no you’re
beautiful when you sat down and just
highlighters a little bit and what I
love and I love that there’s more and
more healthy makeup that the that it’s
it’s an extension of the skin care and
it used to be that
an aesthetician we shied away from
applying makeup right after a skin
service because we wanted the skin to
breathe but today there really is some
beautiful beautiful products that can be
used after a skin service that allows
the skin to breathe and still allows a
person to go back to work after a quick
service or to feel good about doing
makeup you know one of the things one of
the products that I see thawne is a
foundation that’s designed to use post
peels you know when people get a
chemical peel they don’t want to be red
for seven days but not wear makeup is
you know you don’t want people to see
that so we haven’t found a stand excuse
people how to use immediately after the
field so that your skin looks flawless
and it has a growth factor in it the
health of skin heal faster and can you
tell us can you tell us the name of that
product yeah it is oxygen etics okay
then we distribute it of course and it’s
a phenomenal product it has a service A
in it which is a healing agent a very
lightweight I just can’t say enough good
things though I’m we’re really I’m very
blessed board for a company that’s out
products um very well and on makeup
brands I’m very pleased you can’t always
say that when you go into your just
random juice one take a look at their
portfolio but ours for clean formulas
they’re all serving free yeah those are
things that are really important to us
as a community of skin lovers clean as
it possibly can right right well I know
at the top of the show when I introduced
you I indicated that you have that
you’re a mama for lover of art and
lipsticks and long lashes tell us why it
was about the lashes how did the lashes
become such a passion for you you know
from me I have pretty long glasses
naturally anyway but I’m 70 whole life
and I you know when I started doing
lasses was when I had them done
perfectly I had a really nice thing of
mine who had been coming in and coming
in she said you know what let me do your
lashes
I think you would look so good with lots
of senses I never wore anything except
one part of my spare my whole life and I
said okay I love it in my lashes and
instantly my face was Senator my eyes
would just open and I would I thought I
was so much younger and I didn’t look
tired and I went home that night and
I’ll never forget my youngest daughter
she was oh my goodness mommy your eyes
are so pretty now so I said well you
know what from now on it’s lasses every
day and it has that effect on everyone
that I’ve even put a shtetl ashes on
Patti right so immediately you feel
younger youthful more beautiful and then
you just use an ass better you treat
people better well Anita thank you it’s
