Primate specimens collected more than 80 years ago—such as gibbons from wild populations in Southeast Asia—are still being studied by researchers today to learn about the diversity of modern primates and help conservation efforts. Curator Robert Voss explains why these collections are irreplaceable and how the American Museum of Natural History has recently rehoused and re-curated more than 10,000 scientific specimens, which are now being digitized for future generations of researchers. #primates #conservation #gibbons #mammalogy #science Visit AMNH.org for a transcript of this episode: https://www.amnh.org/TKTK This video is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant #DBI 1455763. For Shelf Life’s Season 2, pack your bags for adventure. Explore fantastic stories from more than a century of expeditions that helped build the Museum’s 34 million specimens and artifacts—and find out what scientists are still uncovering about them today.
