Capital Arts Theater Guild partnered with Artist Soapbox to present ASBX LIVE: Home Sweet Home. ASBX LIVE was an evening of theatrical fun, featuring LIVE presentations of two original audio dramas, written by North Carolina writers with additional performances by local musicians, improvisers, and an MC! The main attractions of the evening were the two 20 minute audio dramas, Jane Gets Sent by Teddy Durgin and The Wellerdads by Allan Maule. Both scripts were inspired by the writing prompt: Home Sweet Home and were written to be performed with live sound effects. GUEST BIOS CAPT (RET) MOIRA G. MCGUIRE was a nurse officer with the U.S. Public Health Service and former Chief of the Arts in Health Program at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence. She has worked extensively with vulnerable populations in behavioral health and oncology settings, and in 2010 was hand selected to establish the Sea Services Warrior Clinic at National Naval Medical Center where she used her skills and experience to craft and enhance the care of our country’s wounded, ill, and injured service members as the Program Manager. The focus of her professional work lies in the belief that creativity and expression are not only essential elements in the treatment of illness and injury, but in the prevention of them as well. SARAH MOORE is the Community Specialist for Arts and Health at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. After earning her Masters’ degree at Columbia College, she worked as a dance/movement therapist with trauma survivors and refugees. Utilizing her Bachelor’s in Peace-Building, she facilitated dance-based conflict resolution in Bosnia for five years followed by one year of teaching dance to immigrant students in Portugal. She conducted her master’s thesis in Nairobi and returns annually as part of the collaborative leadership team supporting therapeutic arts training with Global Alliance for Africa. The through-line of Sarah’s work is expanding ethical and equitable access to health and well-being through the arts. GUEST BIOS GAIL ASHBY BRYANT was born and raised in Harlem, New York (the middle child of seven children). She attended Pace University for teaching but upon graduation, enlisted in the Army instead. From 1975-1981 she was a cook and Mess Sergeant. After her service in the army, she graduated from Orange County Community College with a degree in Police Science and State University of New York at New Paltz with a degree in Social Work. She was Director of Social Services for nursing homes for more than 25 years before retiring to North Carolina. Writing is her first love! MARK BARTHOLOMEW grew up in eastern North Carolina. He served in the Army Reserves from 2000-08, deploying to Iraq from 2003-04 with the 351st Military Police Company Combat Support (as a Combat Medic). After coming home, he struggled with PTSD and a traumatic brain injury. It has been a long road but now he happily fills his days as a husband to an amazing wife, a stay-at-home dad to four wonderful boys, while enjoying nature, art, and writing. BILL DIXON, Spec 5 U.S. Army, Vietnam 1967 currently serves as Board Chair for Vets to Vets United, placing rescued dogs with veterans (at no cost) as well as a Board member of Vietnam Veterans of America, North Carolina Council. After his service he obtained his bachelor’s degree as an Industrial Engineer from the University of Wisconsin, Platteville. How can we use writing as a refuge during our journey thru grief? Can we evolve rather than dissolve as we act as caregiver for a loved one? In this episode, Julia Freifeld delves into her creative process as author and artist, and details the personal journey that led to her book: In Each Other’s Bones: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Living. In Each Other’s Bones and Julia Freifeld: Julia and Mark had carefully constructed a life together. Their vision for themselves, their marriage, and their children had always been in sync. Then, life took a terrible turn. Mark was diagnosed with a fatal degenerative neurological disease with no hope for a cure. They would endure ten years of daily discussions about disease, doctors, medicines, and dying. Drawing upon therapy, painting, sacred rituals, and writing, Julia found the strength to remain at peace and not fall to pieces as she worked to keep her marriage strong and prepare for life on her own. A classically trained fine artist, Julia Freifeld earned her degree from Boston University in painting and printmaking. As copyediting chief for Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, she encountered the work of contemporary Southern writers such as Jill McCorkle, Kaye Gibbons, and Clyde Edgerton for the first time. Inspired, she turned her hand to fiction writing, and her first story won a statewide award judged by Shannon Ravenel. She earned an MFA from Warren Wilson College. 167: Incorporating anti-racist practices into writing workshops and joyful creation with writer, Isabel O’Hara Walsh 37:06

Isabel O'Hara Walsh leads writing workshops through the Redbud Writing Project . Redbud offers classes virtually and around the Triangle on topics like Writing the Novel, Experimental Fiction, and one that Isabel and I talk about, Joyful Creation – how to get your writing juices flowing when staring at that blank page. Isabel shares about their experience incorporating anti-racist practices into the workshop and feedback processes. An important resource in helping to shape this framework is the book The Anti-Racist Writer’s Workshop: How to Decolonize the Creative Classroom by Felicia Rose Chavez. Chavez’s book challenges, in her words, “art’s politics of power and privilege” and lays bare the ways that traditional – read: white-supremacist – methods of running workshops work to silence the voices of writers of color and writers with other marginalized identities. Isabel and Mara Thomas also discuss another Artist Soapbox favorite when it comes to rethinking the feedback process: Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process. Lerman’s work helps tailor the feedback process to help the creator retain agency over their work and create an environment where they get the feedback they’re actually looking for rather than an onslaught of unfiltered opinions. PIPER PERISH was also picked as a Spirit of Texas High School Reading Program selection and was a nominee for the Overdrive Book Selection. It's Mara Thomas in conversation with artist and educator Luan Joy Sherman! Mara connected with Luan through the School of the Alternative (SotA) an immersive, non-hierarchical learning environment that seeks to “create conditions necessary for a present-day community of pioneering artists and critical thinkers.” During this year’s SotA session, Luan facilitated a class titled, “Fertile Fear" which Mara and Luan discuss in this episode. The description of Fertile Fear: "A class focused on making friends with fear/avoidance and using these instructive feelings as a door into our true desires. Compassion, vulnerability, emotional safety, and community support are the ideal ingredients for accessing bravery. We'll discuss dimensions of fear, the power of vulnerability, and create guidelines for how we can cultivate bravery together." One of the tools Luan shares in this episode is what he calls his “Daily Practice” – identifying things that he needs to connect with on a daily basis to help him feel emotionally, physically, and creatively healthy. Luan discusses how his Daily Practice came to be, how it was received in creative community, and the tendency that can creep in around using tools like this as a form of self-judgment. BIO: Luan Joy Sherman (he/him) is a white, queer, trans masculine, neurodivergent artist, writer, performer, teacher, and energy worker. He works with School of the Alternative; an experimental art school / world-building project located in Black Mountain, NC as a community facilitator and Board Member. He's taught four classes at SotA: Fertile Fear , Physical Education- The Joy of Having a Body , How to Not Know , and Queering Masculinity . Luan earned an MFA in Sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in May 2020 and is certified in Compassion Cultivation, Mental Health First Aid, and as a Trauma Support Specialist. Friends and accountability buddies! Juliana Finch and Tori Grace Nichols get beautifully deep about writers block, self-care, and being open to the full range of the creative cycle. The conversation is full of tips for gentle process, progress, and productivity. Bio: Tori Grace Nichols (they/them/theirs) describes themself as a prismatic performance artist. They can be seen performing drag as G-Clef with the House of Coxx and causing good trouble around Durham, NC as a cultural organizer and stand up comedian. Most folks call them Grace out of drag. Recent writing credits include sketch comedy with Kahoots Comedy and two audio dramas, Stretchy Shorts and Crocodile Twins, for the podcast platform Artist Soapbox. Through the Center for Documentary Summer Studies Intensive, they co-created a short documentary called Call Me Harriet Tubman about their friend Muffin, who founded the North Carolina Community Bail Fund of Durham. Recent acting credits include Dreaming (assistant puppeteer) with Duke Performances and Freakshow (Mr. Flip) with The Women's Theatre Festival. They also host and produce a podcast called Go With Grace in which they discuss the impact of white Christian supremacy on our daily lives for the organization Soulforce. Tori Grace began their cultural organizing work as the Arts and Culture Fellow for Southerners on New Ground, a Southern queer liberation organization. They are adopted from the Philippines and identify as queer, genderqueer, trans, and disabled. Hey friends, It’s Tamara here. I hope you enjoyed the previous episode introducing 2 of our new guest hosts: Lormarev Jones and Griffin James. I’m back once more before I had the mic over, to introduce two more guest hosts this season: Juliana Finch and Mara Thomas. Yes, if you’ve been a long time listener of Artist Soapbox, then you will likely know Juliana and Mara. Of course you can also read their bios on our updated and very awesome Artist Soapbox website , in the meantime, here are some bits and bobs about these two wonderful humans: Juliana Finch has spent almost two decades writing and performing songs and getting up to various theater- and film- adjacent shenanigans. She has released five albums, performed at music festivals and venues all over the country, and loves having Durham as her home base. She is on the writing team for Artist Soapbox's Jesus Pancake and can be heard as a voice actor in Crocodile Twins and in several other audio dramas. Juliana also wrote the Artist Soapbox theme song that you are enjoying so much in this episode, and she suggested that we call some of our merch Artist Soapsox – I mean, we do have socks in the ASBX store . Artist Soapsox, makes me laugh. Mara Thomas has been following their curiosity down many different paths for the past 20 years. In that time, they have been a musician, actor, voiceover artist, creativity coach, and playwright. Mara's original plays have been performed in the Triangle and NYC and they have held creative writing residencies in Hudson, NY and Martha's Vineyard. Along with their creative pursuits, Mara is a somatic therapist in private practice in Durham. Mara has written over 2 dozen blog posts on the Artist Soapbox website, been interviewed as a guest, been an interviewer, released 2 solo episodes, and voice acted in one of the Declaration of Love episodes. Like Juliana, they are on the Jesus Pancake writing team. Mara is undeniably an ASBX rock star. In this episode, you’ll hear these two friends introduce themselves and each other. You’ll get a sense of their style and vibe, and what they’ll be focusing on in their individual episodes this Season. Just like Lormarev and Griffin, Juliana and Mara are two of my favorite people.
