On Wednesday, I got to moderate a panel at my alma mater, Fordham University in support of HeForShe to discuss ways to address and end Gender Based Violence on campuses. Some of the things we addressed are:

  • What Gender Based Violence is and why it exists
  • How to encourage bystanders and use their voices to participate in the narrative
  • How to look inward and question ourselves on our behaviors that have perpetuated sexism and violence
  • How to get better at defining the issues, collecting data and evidence to identify what works and what doesn't work

There's still a lot of progress to be made. According to the National Sexual Violence Research Center, 1 in 5 women will be sexually assaulted in college as well as 1 in 16 men. That’s 23% of college women and 5 % of college men who experience rape or sexual assault through physical force, violence or incapacitation. 21% of transgender or gender non-conforming students report rape or sexual assault as well. Despite these staggering numbers, numerous studies have shown that Gender Based Violence, Assault and rape are still under reported!
