Best tyre pressures and operating guidelines for maximising mobility for people starting out with 4X4 driving - complete with the underlying beer garden physics of 'why' these recommendations matter.

If you don't have time for the full version:

  • Placard + 10% for highway and good dirt.
  • Placard -10-15% for poor gravel roads with tread fracture risk
  • 25psi for general low-range off-road driving
  • 16psi for soft sand and mud
  • 12psi as a last-ditch resort to get out of a really boggy situation

These recommendations only apply to standard-ish tyre sizes (not those absurd 35-inch tyres you see, from time to time, on heavily modded 4WDs).
