修験道の開祖といわれる「役行者（えんのぎょうじゃ）、役小角」が約1300年前（674年）に蔵王権現を勧請して開山された山岳霊場「三川権現（みかわごんげん）」。
古来より大和の大峯山、伯耆の三徳山と並んで日本三権現に数えられ歴代の国主・諸公をはじめ大衆の信仰も篤く隆盛を極める。
然れども、火災・天災の歴史をたどり栄枯盛衰を繰り返し現在に至る。
新緑目に染みる5月3日に行われる三川権現大祭では、各地よりの山伏・行者によって参拝者の所願成就を祈る『柴灯護摩』の炎が天を焦がし、火渡りでお陰を頂きます。
