There are moments where decisive action is necessary. The challenge is that these decisions can be made in a moment but have long lasting ramifications, and how do you navigate that? If you’ve ever been a part of a Dungeons and Dragons adventuring party, you know the terrifying feeling when the wizard says, “I cast fireball.” Yes, it may defeat the enemies, but those things are often big enough to fill a whole room and fire doesn’t distinguish between friend and foe. If you’re the one with the fire, though, it’s not always as simple as ‘do the thing, because it needs doing’ or ‘don’t do the thing because it hurts.’ We seek God in these moments because He’s the only one who really knows how to navigate that tension. When we seek God and others, we move in ways outside our instincts.

This tale is brought to you by my friend and occasional dungeon master Ryan Felton from the City on a Hill actual play podcast. You can hear me playing This One, the warforged paladin of The Creator, as well as a number of our friends from across the nerdy-Christian-podcast-verse as we tell stories in Ryan’s homebrewed world using the Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition system. It’s family friendly, and if you have ever been uncomfortable exploring D&D because of things you might have heard, Ryan has a number of episodes where he explains and explores his world-building process.
