he Red Sox are ahead in the standings by 1 game with 2 left to play. The 2 games are at Yankee Stadium. The Red Sox need just one win in two games and Mel Parnell, who has won 25 games during the season, on the mound for Boston. Allie Reynolds is starting for New York. There are 69,511 fans watching. After trailing 4-0, the Yankees come back to tie the game, and Johnny Lindell hits an eighth-inning, game-winning, home run. The next day, before 68,055, it is Boston's Ellis Kinder facing New York's Vic Raschi. The Yankees lead 1-0 after 7 innings. The Red Sox bring in Parnell, who pitched yesterday, to relieve in the 8th inning. Tommy Henrich hits a home run, and then a sore- armed Tex Hughson is brought in on relief. Hughson yields a 3-run triple to Jerry Coleman, although it is really a pop fly that just eludes Al Zarilla in short center. In the ninth inning the Red Sox rally for three runs but still fall short. It is Casey Stengel's first pennant.
