Join co-hosts Winifred A. Winston and LeDerick Horne for an extraordinary live recording of the Black and Dyslexic Podcast, hosted by the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA). In this dynamic session, we bring together a diverse panel of voices to explore the powerful intersectionality of being Black and Neurodivergent. Together, our panelists will engage in a captivating discussion, shedding light on their personal stories, triumphs, and challenges. They will provide invaluable advice to educators, drawing from their own experiences and offering concrete tips and strategies. This session is designed to empower educators in developing culturally competent and inclusive approaches that support and uplift diverse learners.

Here's what you can expect from this exciting live in-person episode of the Black and Dyslexic podcast, recorded in collaboration with NJEA:

  • Creating Safe and Inclusive Spaces: Explore strategies for creating safe and inclusive spaces within schools and communities that promote open dialogue.
  • The importance of fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment for Black neurodivergent students.
  • The need to normalize conversations around mental health and disabilities.
  • The trauma faced at home, school, and work when you learn differently.
  • And so much more!

About the panel:
Our panel consists of incredible individuals, including a courageous Piscataway high school student and self-advocate, Deziree Graham, who shares her lived experience as a Black neurodivergent individual. Alongside her, we have three exceptional professionals in the field of education, each bringing their unique expertise and insights. Frank Latham, Youth Leadership and People First Coordinator at the New Jersey Council on Developmental Disabilities (NJCDD); Carmen Porter - Learning Disabilities Teacher/Consultant in Pittsgrove Twp and consultant with the NJEA; and Shaye Brown-Crandol - Special Education Teacher in Prospect Park, previously in Paterson, and parent of a child with a disability.
