This week on Black Girl Film Club, we take a long (very long!) hard look at Imitation of Life (1959), directed by Douglas Sirk and starring Lana Turner, Juanita Moore, Susan Kohner, and Sandra Dee. This melodramatic movie and the original 1934 version are so beloved that they've both been included in the National Film Registry and we honestly can't figure out why. It even secured two Best Supporting Oscar nominations! HOW? Also in this episode: we talk about racial passing and its depiction on screen, novelist Fannie Hearst's life and inspiration for the novel of the same name, and even try to reimagine this movie as a blackmail/murder mystery! Our recommendation this week is Roma (2018) dir. Alfonso Cuarón. Support us with a Ko-fi! https://ko-fi.com/blackgirlfilmclub Follow us on Twitter @/blkgirlfilmclub.
