Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 22 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Tuesday morning 23 July 2024, with clear skies and 23 degrees Celsius at 5am.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.
In Rugby Union: The competition for Rugby 7s medals at the Olympics is very tough. Arguably South Africa, Japan, Samoa, Kenya and Uruguay will not bag a medal at the games.
And while Argentina, France and New Zealand are the favourites for Gold, you would be nuts to discount double Olympic gold medal winners Fiji.
In Rugby League: News Corp is reporting that incoming Eels Head Coach, Jason Ryles, who was released from his Storm contract last week, is about to undertake a “major overhaul” of the Eels, which includes pulling the trigger on the Club leadership.
Incumbent Captain Clint Gutherson may be moved to the Centres next season to accommodate young gun Blaize Talagi, and the changes don’t stop there - Ryles will also move out current interim Coach Trent Barrett.
In Combat Sports: ESPN’s Top 100 Athletes ranking since 2000 has sparked controversy, particularly for placing Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao at 71.
The list, topped by American swimmer Michael Phelps, ranked numerous basketball and American athletes higher than Pacquiao.
Despite being the only eight-division world champion in boxing, Pacquiao was placed below Floyd Mayweather, who ranked 25th.
The selection involved over 70,000 votes from ESPN experts, but many fans felt the list was biased towards American athletes and sports like basketball and baseball.
In SportsBiz: YouTuber Logan Paul’s energy drink, Prime Hydration, is being sued by the US Olympic Committee for trademark infringement, with the Paris Olympics set to start later this week.
In a federal lawsuit filed last Friday, the committee alleges Prime Hydration used trademarked phrases such as “OLYMPIC,” “OLYMPIAN,” “TEAM USA,” and “GOING FOR GOLD” on its products and in its advertising.
It’s not the first time Prime has come under scrutiny: In July 2023, the US Senate asked the Food and Drug Administration to investigate the company, after energy drinks came under scrutiny for their popularity among children, despite being marketed to adults.
Prime Hydration, doesn’t contain caffeine, but Prime Energy has 200 milligrams of caffeine in a 12-ounce can, which is equivalent to the amount of caffeine in a six-pack of Coke.
In the Olympic Games: NBA star LeBron James has been selected by his US Olympic teammates as the flag bearer for Team USA, for the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics on the River Seine in Paris on Friday.
“It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together,” James said in a statement.
“For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything, not only to me, but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians and so many people across the country with big aspirations.
Sports has the power to bring us all together, and I’m proud to be a part of this important moment.”
In Football: England football star, Ollie Watkins has confirmed his engagement to girlfriend Ellie Alderson after he proposed to her at a romantic lakeside villa at Lake Como in Italy yesterday.
The England striker, 28 has been in a relationship with interior designer Ellie, also 28, since 2018 and she took to social media to reveal they are set to tie the knot.
She told Instagram followers: 'Special night in Lake Como with my fiancé... ahhhh sooo happy.'
You know how Donna Summer did it on one of her songs a long time ago – yeah that’s how?
And that’s a wrap peeps!
