Today, we have the pleasure of talking with Louise Love from Assemble Design, one of our outstanding DevelopHers. Louise possesses exceptional skills in design, making her a truly remarkable asset to any development.

Since Louise joined BuildHer, the dynamic of our Q&A sessions has been elevated as we benefit from her diverse knowledge along with a collaboration between architects, builders, interior designers – you name it! Together, we all engage in lively discussions and brainstorming sessions to find innovative solutions for all kinds of problems.

In today’s conversation, we’re discussing what to do when the design brief is just not aligning with the budget. This topic is super relevant because we’re noticing a growing trend where people are facing uncertainties regarding construction costs and the current market conditions resulting in many briefs being submitted with ambitious aspirations and desires but without enough in the budget to bring them to life.

The key is to find ways to bridge the gap between the budget and the brief, allowing projects to progress rather than experiencing disappointment and bringing them to a halt. By finding creative solutions and adjusting expectations, we can strike a balance that keeps our hopes and dreams intact and allows our projects to move forward successfully.

Louise shares how in today's social media-driven world, we’re constantly seeing others sharing their amazing ideas and designs leading to possible disappointment because we just don’t understand how the creative process can align with our budgetary constraints. Inspiration is amazing but it's essential to bring those ideas back in line with our own financial limitations and what we can realistically achieve.

Every project is unique, and it's crucial to recognise that there is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to costing a project. Factors such as the site conditions, accessibility, topography, and the existing condition of the property all contribute to the variability in project costs.

This is where the value of the BuildHer community truly shines. With a diverse group of individuals engaged in various projects, there is a wealth of knowledge and experience to tap into. Everyone is encouraged to ask questions and seek guidance from others who have undertaken similar endeavours. You can then gain a better understanding of the financial scope of your project and allow you to establish a rough estimate. Having this ballpark figure in mind provides a level of comfort and clarity, enabling you to approach the design process with greater confidence.

Listen in for all of Louise’s tips and expertise to engage your designer from the very beginning to create outstanding designs that sit within your budget and keep the end goal at the front of your mind.
