This week, we discuss two devastating films about young women in extremely bleak situations.

The first is Rosetta (1999), starring Émilie Dequenne as the eponymous protagonist, a young girl living with her alcoholic mother in a trailer park in Belgium. The film, directed by the Dardenne brothers, won the Palme d’Or at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival.

The second is Lilya 4-Ever (2002), directed by Swedish director Lukas Moodysson. Based on a true story, the film follows a young girl, Lilya, abandoned by her mother and left to fend for herself in the former Soviet Union.
