This chapter is a continuation of the revelation of Jesus Christ in heavenly glory. The Lion of the tribe of Judah and the Root of David alone was found worthy to open the seven seals of the scroll held by God. Jesus the Lamb of God was universally praised because He was worthy to take the scroll and open the seals, having redeemed people of every tribe, tongue and nation. Jesus does what no one else can. Jephthah sought a diplomatic solution to the Ammonite invasion, but the king of the Ammonites refused to listen. After Jephthah made a vow to the LORD, God helped him to rout the Ammonites and return home in peace. To keep his word Jephthah (together with his daughter) paid an unthinkable price that points toward the sacrifice God freely provided by sending His only begotten Son as a promised sacrifice for sinners. Synopsis: God raised up Tola and Jair as judges over Israel, and 18 years of oppression by enemies followed due to the idolatry of God's people. When they cried out to God He refused to deliver them, and the people accepted God's punishment for their sin and turned to God in truth. Though innocent of wrongdoing, Jesus accepted punishment for the sins of the world to abolish death and bring life to light through the Gospel. Synopsis: After the death of Gideon, the children of Israel did not remember the LORD and plunged back into idolatry. This departure from God led to Abimelech's murderous scheme to kill his brothers and rule over Shechem. Jotham, Gideon's youngest son, escaped and pronounced a curse God would bring to pass in due time. Remembering Jesus is what God's people are called to do. After the LORD God delivered the Midianites into the hand of Gideon and his 300 men promised, Gideon's story was not over as new conflicts arose. Not only did he need to contend with Midianite warriors and kings, but he faced conflict with the tribe of Ephraim, cities and elders. Victory brought new temptations into Gideon's life, and it is wise for us to apply these lessons to our lives today. After the LORD called Gideon to deliver Israel from their oppressors, he obeyed God to destroy his father's altar to Baal, build an altar to God, and sacrifice his father's bull on the altar using an image as fuel. The book of Judges embarks on a inspirational and insightful journey as we follow the footsteps of God's people in Canaan who He established in the Promised Land. While God gave the Hebrews land as their inheritance, they needed to walk by faith and obedience to God to receive it. Seeing their faith and flaws shows us our own need to seek God, believe His word and courageously work to do His will. After the return of Jesus to judge the earth, it will mark the beginning of His millennial reign where Satan is bound and knowledge of God will cover the earth like the sea. Satan will ultimately be loosed from his prison, go out and deceive the nations, and Jesus will destroy Satan and all His enemies--permanently. In John's vision, he saw a great harlot being carried by a beast with 7 heads and 10 horns--supporting the mother of all abominations God will destroy. Instead of being faithful in the worship and praise of the one true God, apostate religion will be a pawn of the antichrist until it no longer serves his purpose. True and undefiled religion is by faith in Christ alone, and He is able to transform us from within to desire and do God's will. Synopsis: In this chapter, the seven bowls of God's wrath are poured out on the earth with devastating consequences. The response of those under wrath is an indictment against them, for they will blaspheme God rather than repenting and giving Him glory. God's wrath is measured and has an end, and blessed is the one who watches, looking to Jesus who is the Way.
