Mark Franklin was your Career Buzz correspondent interviewing keynoters and speakers on-site at the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association’s 2018 Conference in lovely Winnipeg, Manitoba. The CCPA aims to help practitioners and researchers who work in the mental health field. For the first time ever, there are five (and soon to be six) generations working side by side in our workplaces. Each has their own perspectives, experiences and attitudes. Working effectively across generations can be frustrating… or exhilarating. First up is CCPA president, John Driscoll. After working for ten years in parish ministry, John served as faculty member and campus counsellor at the Nova Scotia Community College for 27 years. Since retirement from the college, he established a private practice in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Next is Julie Holden. Julie is principal, at Holden and Associates, specializing in workplace mental health consulting. Julie’s been an executive in the world of benefits consulting with SEB, Towers Watson, Morneau Shepell, and others. Her focus is on disability management and employee benefits. As you’ll hear, Julie has been consulting with the CCPA on the important topic of 3^rd party billing. (Interview at 00:14:12) Then, CCPA conference speaker and exhibitor, Sheldon Franken. Sheldon is a school counselor in Vancouver and founder of Inquiry Adventures. His organization supports active and experiential education to increase engagement and understanding. His work focuses on social-emotional learning, for teams, community building, and personal and mental wellness. To be successful, Sheldon draws on previous experiences in classroom teaching, physical education, outdoor education for youth-at-risk, and community engagement. (Interview at 00:27:25) Lastly, we hear from CCPA conference keynote speaker Nora Spinks. Nora joined the Vanier Institute of the Family in 2011, where she currently serves as CEO. Throughout her career, Nora’s engaged the research community to mobilize knowledge, and connect those who study, serve and support Canada’s diverse families. Nora is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Workplace Wellness Pioneer of the Year Award. (Interview at 00:42:17)
