“Jesus’ statement here goes back to the Sermon on the Mount. The kind of righteousness Jesus demands surpasses the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees. It doesn't surpass the righteousness of scribes and Pharisees by being more scrupulous than theirs. It surpasses the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees by being a redemptive righteousness, a righteousness of compassion and healing. Jesus has a different program for Israel's redemption: not holiness by separation but compassion for tax collectors and sinners.” - Peter Leithart
