When Deborah Hazell decided to seek a new challenge, after more than three decades working in financial services in the United States, her criteria was simple.

“I wanted to do something more meaningful,” she tells CEO Stories host and Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce chief executive Henrietta Brealey.

Deborah’s determination to make a positive societal impact led her to Birmingham-based Unity Trust Bank, where was appointed chief executive in September 2021.

Unity’s mission to help organisations which make a positive contribution to economic, social and environmental needs aligned perfectly with Deborah’s values.

In this podcast, she tells Henrietta about taking an unconventional route into banking, why she was reluctant to accept her first CEO position and how, through her role at Unity, she is “trying to better society”.
