When a teenage Doug Wright decided to seek his first opportunity in the world of work, he was by his own admission “pretty much unemployable”.

However, when he did gain his first job – as a 93p-an-hour cleaner at his local McDonald’s – it turned out to be the first step on a remarkable journey with the global fast-food corporation.

Fast-forward four decades, Doug is now a multi-restaurant franchisee – with his company Wright Restaurants operating 21 branches of McDonald’s across the West Midlands, employing around 2,000 people.

In this episode, Doug tells Henrietta about his rise through the ranks at one of the world’s best-known brands – from cleaner, part-time and full-time assistant roles and his first management position through to being offered the opportunity to purchase his first restaurant.

He shares thoughts on scaling up his business from one to multiple restaurants, adopting a people-centric approach and being forced to innovate to meet ever-changing customer needs.

Away from McDonald’s, Doug is also well-known around the region for his incredible charity work – and he discusses a life-changing incident that fuelled his desire to give something back.
