Pete Panariello spends most of his time in a wheelchair. He was able-bodied until his mid-30s and still does not have a definitive diagnosis, however it is MS-related and is a form of Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia.

Pete has a magnetic, outgoing personality and everyone wants to be around him. You cannot help but feel uplifted in his presence because of his positivity and sense of humor.

The most frustrating thing for Pete is not having a diagnosis which means that he cannot answer the question WHY he is in a wheelchair.

He talks about his experience of being in a wheelchair: ways that he is treated differently, feelings of self-consciousness, and how he deals with seeing old friends that did not know he was in a wheelchair.

Pete's belief is that we all have "stuff", and it is not even a question for him to have a positive attitude on a daily basis. He does not give in to negativity or self-doubt. His advice to others is: YOU HAVE NO CHOICE. YOU CAN EITHER LIVE OR DIE.

Pete sees everyday as a silver lining and the fact that his son is healthy and his wife loves him is what's most important to him. He is incredibly grateful for his friends and family, especially his wife and son, who sees him as a hero. He finds more positivity in the fact that maybe because of his situation, his family and friends are even closer to him.

Pete's core beliefs are:

  • POSITIVITY
  • APPRECIATION FOR WHAT'S AROUND YOU and
  • GRATITUDE

Kathy, Pete's wife, joins us for the second half of the show. Brilliant and gorgeous, she is the hero behind the hero.

Kathy talks about her history with Pete and tells us how she went into the relationship with her eyes wide open.

Kathy shares an important lesson she learned from her mother, who is a great role model to her: the ability to face adversity with a positive attitude is the most important thing. She knew that when she met Pete and he had these attributes, that they would get through anything together.

Kathy also talks about their decision to start a family, how her son handles everything, the biggest challenge over time, and that a SENSE OF HUMOR and POSITIVITY are the best parts of their relationship.

Kathy started out planning for the future but learned from Pete that in some ways you're better off not dwelling on the future because you can get lost in the fear of what might happen. Instead, she has learned to ENJOY THE PRESENT. In this way her attitude has become more balanced.

Kathy gives Pete credit for his strength, courage, positivity, and grace.

Kathy leaves us with her belief: Everyone will face challenges. We need to find the strength within ourselves to face those challenges and also respect and support others going through them.

Pete and Kathy both say they feel 'lucky'. They are grateful for everything.
