In the 1980s, there were only 63 Black films by, for, or about Black Americans. But in the 1990s, that number quadrupled, with 220 Black films making their way to cinema screens nationwide. What sparked this “Black New Wave?” Who blazed this path for contemporaries like Ava DuVernay, Kasi Lemmons and Jordan Peele? And how did these films transform American culture as a whole? Before discussing “Ouija: Origin of Evil” (2016), Episode 90 gives you a nice rundown of 90’s horror movies your hosts enjoyed. It was a scant decade in the horror genre, but there’s enough there to impress even a skeptical horror movie fan. Sure, they had to import a fair amount from Japan, but that’s life in the Horror Business. “But what have our fair hosts watched lately?” you might ask. Well, speaking of Japan, Richard finally checked “Wild Zero” off his list. Another Jess Franco gem, “A Virgin Among the Living Dead” gets some attention as well. Will locked eyes with the Fantastic Four…not as fantastic as he had hoped! Jolyon at long last got to see “Get Out” and shares his thoughts on this modern classic. Richard and Will both imagine the misheard “Leg of Batman” with a Hitchcockian spin. This made “Lego Batman” immediately less interesting. Should “Mant” have been a real movie? Should “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” (1992) have been the "Apocalypse Now” of Dracula movies? Was it? Listen and find out! Also find out how Jolyon was in the movie theater Gamera landed on in Japan, watching Gamera land on it! True story! You’ll hear about what the people behind “Ouija: Origin of Evil” got right and what they got wrong…right down to shiny cars and cigarettes. So, time to get out the Ouija board (literally translated, “Yes Yes” board) and see what rules need to be broken! And if you don’t have duct tape, put a sock in it!
