Welcome to Day 2 of BatCon! It had been 23 years since Batman last graced the silver screen, and inspired by the success of books like THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS and THE KILLING JOKE, Warner Brothers was looking to bring Batman back to the movies — a meaner, badder Batman than Adam West’s campy interpretation, a Batman worthy of the name, a Batman for the eighties. To that end they turned to a young Tim Burton, fresh off PEE WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE and BEETLEJUICE, and re-started a franchise that would span the next decade and affect people’s perspective on the character forever.

But how does BATMAN ’89 hold up today, especially stacked up against Christopher Nolan’s darker, more realistic fare? Joining us to discuss that is the senior entertainment writer at the Huffington Post: Mike Ryan. Mike also explains what his favorite BATMAN film is (and why), and discusses how film marketing and film soundtracks have changed since the halcyon days of 1989. As per usual, whenever a guest worries that they’ve “ruined” the podcast, it turns out to be one of our better episodes, and this one is no exception.
