A Clare farming representative claims the future of agriculture in this county is in serious trouble. It follows a report in the Teagasc National Farm survey that incomes on dairy and tillage farms have fallen drastically from 2022 to 2023, with average incomes reducing 71% and 69% respectively. There are fears from within the sector that without governmental support many farmers will be not able to continue their livelihoods. O’Callaghan’s Mills farmer and Chairperson of the Clare branch of the ICMSA Martin McMahon, says young people see the problems and are unlikely to undertake jobs in farming.
