Laurie Cooke CEO of the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (www.HBAnet.org) shares her interesting career journey from Hospital Pharmacist to Corporate Executive and now Global Association Management Executive. I asked her how she managed to leverage her skills from the diverse jobs and land at the top of the HBA described on the website as:

A global nonprofit organization comprised of individuals and organizations from across the healthcare industry committed to:

  • achieving gender parity in leadership positions
  • facilitating career and business connections
  • providing effective practices that enable organizations to realize the full potential of their female talent

Laurie explains how she constantly stepped up and raised her hand and took on a broad range of opportunities at a time when she saw many of her very successful colleagues becoming highly specialized as a career advancement strategy. Clearly her opposite strategy worked extremely well for her.

She tells us how she went from hospital pharmacist to industry when she moved out of the country with her then new husband. During her time in the corporate world she took on a variety of roles that helped her develop an extensive knowledge of the drug industry from development to post launch marketing - as she puts it from the inception to ingestion of a drug.

It is this industry knowledge and experience that helped land her a position in non-profit association management when, as part of a dual career relationship, she moved back to the states and landed an an executive management opportunity with the Project Management Institute.

In addition to the great story of her career journey, Laurie shares very valuable advice and information on confidence and career advancement for women in the 21st century including her passion for gender parity in the workplace.
