Episode 73 - Moon Knight - Mission and Purpose

This week we head back to our roots as we start a special multi-week comparison between the current Moon Knight run written by Jed MacKay and drawn by Alessandro Cappuccio and the Marvel Studios adaptation we got in 2022 to close out our season 2. We've looked at some of these books previously, but rather than have you go back and listen to a past episode, we'll talk about key things you need to be aware of as we prepare you for "The Last Days of Moon Knight".

This Week's Stack

  • Moon Knight (2021-2023) #1-20

Discussion Topics

New Supporting Cast

  • Gone are all the old friends we knew
  • In are new characters right from Book 1 - 4 in particular you need to know:
  • Reese - Vegan turned Vampire that becomes Marc's Assistant at the Midnight Mission
  • Soldier - Ex Hydra err... soldier who is devoted to Moon Knight and the Mission. So much so he dies (and is resurrected as a vampire) for the cause
  • Tigra - Old teammate and love interest from Moon Knight's days in the West Cost Avengers
  • Dr Badr - Another Fist of Khonshu that wants Marc Spector to stop helping vampires

Other System Identities Missing

  • We don't see Steve Grant or Jack Lockley until issue 12
  • Leads to several issues where they talk out what is/has been doing and agree to help

New Powers and New Lore

  • Dr. Badr shares previously unknown things about becoming a Fist of Khonshu
  • Shares, after dying himself, that they can't live forever. Their mind won't allow for it
  • Quick passage through an alternate dimension where wreath versions of previous Moon Knights reside
  • Moon Debt (issue 20) - We learn about a Fist of Khonshu named Denise who worked with Blade

Wide Assortment of Villains

  • Smaller/Deep Cut baddies we've seen:
  • 8 Ball
  • Marsdale Slaughter
  • Waxman
  • Jigsaw
  • Nemean / Grand Mal
  • Commodore Planet
  • The Harlequin hit men
  • Main Villians through the first 20 books (that may play a major role in the final 10 books):
  • Zodiac
  • "The Structure" and Vampires

Final Thoughts
