Today’s episode is a look at pure survival and what lengths a lady might go to make it in 19th century America. Ida Mayfield Wood came from obscurity, determined to pull herself up out of a life of poverty and create a new path for her and her family. So maybe it was on the back of another woman’s husband, but Ida had a plan. If it wasn’t for that pesky financial crisis otherwise known as The Great Depression, she would have carried on completely unnoticed. However, spooked by the prospects of loosing all she had worked/lied for, Ida became known as the Recluse of Herald Square. Subscribe today and follow along as we explore some of the lesser known stories of Complicated Women of History.

If you are into stories about interesting women, then you’ll love our other podcast, Autobiography Book Club. Leah and Jill read one female authored book a month and discuss it. We Read, We Drink, We Laugh. Join us won’t you. Subscribe today to Autobiography Book Club.
