Several cold cases throughout the United States have recently been solved using new DNA technology and genealogy investigations, including the infamous Golden State Killer who was arrested in 2018. The San Diego District Attorney's Office has also solved several cold cases using genealogy, such as the Potter murder and the Martinez murder. Deputy District Attorney Brian Erickson of the Cold Case Homicide Unit joins the podcast to discuss how law enforcement solves cold cases using this new investigation method.

Each episode we examine the laws on the books; 3 are real and 1 is fake. Can you guess which law is the fake?

  1. CA Penal Code §1: This Code shall apply to all persons who reside, pass through, or otherwise perambulate within the State of California.
  2. CA Penal Code §2: This Code takes effect at twelve o’clock, noon, on the first day of January, eighteen hundred and seventy-three.
  3. CA Penal Code §3: No part of it is retroactive, unless so declared.
  4. CA Penal Code §4: The rule of common law, that penal statutes are to be strictly construed, has no application to this Code.
