Show Notes, June 20, 2017

Welcome everyone to the June 20th edition of Dead Reckoning Radio! I am your host, Jay Friesen joined around the table by Hadley Heath Manning and Dr. Brian G. Mattson. DR Radio is where we discuss the latest in cultural topics from a distinctly Christian worldview.

Today’s show is going to be another 5-star rated show, our entire first segment is going to be nothing but quick takes. There’s a lot to comment on so we’ll do it. After the break we’ll be diving into a few very disturbing things about the attempted murders on a Virginia baseball field. And finally, Hadley is going to close the show during DR Recommends. As usual, we’ll be taking a couple breaks to hear from our sponsor, followed by games of wit and whimsy, with today’s selections being: Nerd v. Nerd and in honor of today marking the 73rd anniversary of D-Day, a game of Who Am I? The WWII Edition.

Quick Takes (Segment One)

• USS Fitzgerald, RIP – Seven U.S. Navy crewmembers were killed when their destroyer, was rammed in the dead of night by a container ship off the coast of Japan. Such accidents are extremely rare, and an investigation is underway to uncover how the collision could have occurred.
• Otto Warmbier, RIP – 22-year-old Otto Warmbier has died just after being released by the North Korean Government. Warmbier had been detained in North Korea while he was with a tour group. His crime? He had taken a propaganda poster from his hotel. North Korea sentenced him to 15 years of hard labor, and apparently he was literally worked to death. Rest In Peace, and may that loathsome regime receive justice, either soon in the here-and-now, or in the hereafter.
• Miscarriage of Justice – The Minnesota police officer who shot Philandro Castile during a traffic stop has been acquitted of second degree manslaughter, prompting outrage all across the wide political spectrum. Castile, a concealed carry permit holder, had informed the officer that he was carrying a firearm, and (according to the recording) was doing everything he could do avoid being shot. The officer gave conflicting commands, and shot him dead in the driver’s seat, right next to his girlfriend.
• More Deportation Concerns? In our last show, we highlighted the disturbing case of a New Jersey immigrant being suddenly deported after living in the US legally for 16 years, leaving his wife and son behind. Now there are reports of as many as 100 deportations imminent for Iraqi Christians in Michigan back to ISIS-troubled parts of the world. These Christians fear we sending them to slaughter.
• Mr. Potato Head Family Formation: What Could Go Wrong? A lengthy story at kentucky.com sheds light on “what could go wrong.” Brooke Verity Cochran was a briefly famous surrogate mother for a gay “power couple” in Kentucky, giving birth to quadruplets. The heartwarming story made national news, and everyone cheered how selfless and happy everyone was. Well, the power couple has long since split, with accusations of abuse; litigation continues as to the complicated parental rights situation with the kids; and, oh, Brooke Cochran is dead from depression and drug overdose. We should at least ask the question: Do we have a clue what we are doing with out social experiment?
• Two “Men” and a Baby – Another couple is hitting the “heartwarming story” circuit; this time it’s Trystan Reese and Biff Chaplow, two “men” who have managed to do what was until yesterday considered impossible: they made babies without any fancy scientific intervention. The NBC story is amazing for its fidelity to our new language standards: it simply reports that these two men had children. Except that one of them “used to” be a woman, and kept her female biological parts. So what really happened was less worthy of a headline story: A man’s and woman had two children. All the best to them.
• Can Liberalism and Christianity Co-Exist? No, says the newly resigned leader of the UK’s Liberal Democrat Party. In a stunning and moving speech, Tim Farron expressed how he found it increasingly difficult to be a faithful Christian man in charge of his own Party, which intolerantly demanded ideals that conflicted with his faith. Let’s talk a bit about the “illiberalism” of so much of modern “liberalism.”
• God Bless the Saint Louis Cardinals – In what has now become a predictable occurrence, an LGBTQ advocacy group tried to shame the St. Louis ballclub for hosting a “Christian Night” at Busch Stadium this season. Particularly irking the group was the invitation of former star Lance Berkman, an outspoken Christian who opposed a Houston, Texas “bathroom bill.” For once, an organization refused to cave to the demands. The team replied that they host a special night for all kinds of groups (including LGBTQ groups), and would remain welcoming to everybody. Christians included. There’s a phrase we don’t hear often enough. Good for them.

Segment Two: A Near Massacre in Alexandria

A terrifying moment. On June 14th, dozens of Republican Congressmen and staffers gathered on a quiet baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia, to practice for an upcoming charity game. Suddenly, shots fired. James Thomas Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois opened fire on the field with a semi-automatic AR-15. A gun battle ensued between the assailant and two Capitol Police Officers. Hodgkinson was shot dead at the scene, but not before wounding four, including Louisiana Representative Steve Scalise, who remains in critical condition.

There are a few very disturbing things about this catastrophe. When Hodgkinson pulled into the parking lot he asked someone leaving, “Do you know if these are Republicans or Democrats?” In other words, this was to some extent politically motivated, although there are other factors such as alcoholism and possible mental illness. Guys: It seems like the more our nation talks about the urgent need for civility–the louder we say that–the more shrill things get. It’s sort of a negative feedback loop. Many fear this is a first crack in our society really cracking up. What do you think?

Let’s talk about firearms, since that just has to be done when things like this happen. We know it’s a polarizing issue. While Congressman Scalise was lying on his near-deathbed, a number of left wing outfits were mocking him for his strong pro-2nd Amendment positions. There’s some ill-advised hot taking! Yikes. But the question has to be raised because we live in a country where it IS relatively easy for a law-abiding citizen to obtain a rifle, AND relatively easy for a non-law abiding citizen to obtain a rifle. Does this incident tell us anything about public policy on firearms? Should it? Let’s outline the realm of the “ideal” and the realm of the “possible.”
