Kevin and Shawnda give some SEMA secrets, sponsorships, entrepreneurship, branding, and more!
About Shawnda:
We all comprise different identities; Shawnda is no different. One-part designer, one-part technologist, one-part advocate, and of course, a consummate car girl. She has an accomplished career as a designer, strategist, car builder, and business owner. Her human-centered design philosophy has empowered her to develop award-winning products, nationally recognized strategies, and enhanced user experiences with global brands such as Apple, Microsoft, Cisco, Zappos, and General Dynamics. Currently, she is a Product & Experience design team leader for REI.
Shawnda is a career problem solver by trade, and this knack for taking on the most significant challenges led her to the unlikely partnership that forged Girl Gang Garage. She helped build and lead this alongside automotive industry icon and national TV host Bogi Lateiner. This cause-oriented business brought awareness and advocacy to gender inequities within the automotive industry, creating learning opportunities for hundreds of girls and women. Shouldering this commitment for four years while seeing and seeking new challenges, Shawnda has progressed her story forward and launched her own company Southern Fried Concepts. This latest venture is proving to be the galvanizing haven of her experience as both a designer, problem solver, advocate, and change maker. Always seeking to disrupt and force provocative conversations, this venture brings the narrative back home to a personal dialogue around a celebration of manual processes and tools. Yet, it is as much a celebration of tactile experiences as a call to arms in an overly technology-laden world to embrace manual, handmade techniques and processes, all masquerading as a multi-disciplinary design service.
This is Shawnda, a Designer of Things, always making, thinking, growing, and asking “why.” A story always in progress, changing, challenging, and helping via the power of design.
