×Welcome back to the final episode of the Creativity Miniseries! In this conversation, Emily Sutherland and I open up our personal creativity toolkits and share the resources and strategies that help us bring our ideas to life. Working on this miniseries with Emily has been an absolute joy. She’s not just an incredible creative and coach—she’s also become a trusted friend and advisor throughout the development of Wrestling a Walrus, my first children’s book. I truly could not imagine doing this without her. Interestingly, we didn’t plan on recording another discussion on the creative process, but that’s exactly where our behind-the scenes, warm-up conversation led us. So, we left it in. I think you might find some usefulness in this bonus material as we share our thoughts on the value of authenticity, the importance of differentiating yourself, and the surprising relationship between uncertainty and clarity. A huge thank you to Emily for her wisdom and generosity, and to you for joining us as part of the creative community. Buy my NEW book Wrestling a Walrus, HERE! Be ready for the idea. Be discerning about what, when, and who to share your idea with. When your idea is at a tender stage, who are your tender people? Do you need an editor or a cheerleader? Journaling. Let the creative juices flow without requiring an outcome. The more you write, the more ideas will come. Immerse yourself and trust the process. Creative expression can be a powerful tool for personal healing and growth because the creative work we do is so connected to the healing work we need. From following along in this Creativity Miniseries, you know that Emily Sutherland has been my special guest on this journey. Emily is a ghostwriter, published author, coach, and executive storyteller. Together, we have explored the messy, magical stages of bringing an idea to life—Inspiration, Preparation, and Perspiration. Now, we’ve arrived at the final stage: Creation. In the Creation stage, you pour your heart into the work, but how do you know when it’s truly finished? Is it ever really done? When is it time to share your creation with the world? This final stage of the process can feel both vulnerable and exhilarating. Emily and I explore it all. While this episode covers the last stage in our series on the creative process, we’re not done just yet! Stick around for our next episode, when we share our Creativity Toolkit—packed with tips on making time for your craft, resources for self-publishing, and much more. Thank you for listening! Welcome back to our Creativity Miniseries on Don’t Cut Your Own Bangs! We’re diving into the next (and sweatiest) stage of creativity: perspiration! This is where ideas move from being dreams and start becoming reality. I’m joined once again by my brilliant friend, Emily H. Sutherland—a ghostwriter, published author, coach, and executive storyteller. Together, we’re getting real about what it takes to push past resistance, embrace creativity, and bring your ideas to life. We use our own messy, sweaty experiences—including my upcoming children’s book—to illustrate the difference between “just do it” sweating and “shame” sweating. And, we share how movement, breath work, and self-imposed deadlines can help you power through creative roadblocks. If you’ve ever felt stuck between having a great idea and making it happen, this episode is your ticket to action—no perfection required. Buy my NEW book Wrestling a Walrus, HERE! Welcome back to Don’t Cut Your Own Bangs and our Creativity Miniseries! I’m thrilled to continue this deep dive into the creative process alongside my friend and fellow creative, Emily H. Sutherland—a ghostwriter, published author, coach, and executive storyteller. Together, we’re exploring what it means to embrace creativity, break through resistance, and bring ideas to life. In our last episode, we discussed the first stage of creativity: inspiration—how talking about creativity, building community around it, and applying maybe a little bit of structure can allow ideas to feel more tangible and possible. Now, we’re moving into the next phase: preparation—the crucial but often overlooked step that turns inspiration into something real. Preparation can feel deceptively inactive—even lazy. But in reality, nothing is wasted. This stage is where clarity and intention come together, setting the foundation for everything that follows. If you’ve ever felt stuck between having a great idea and actually making it happen, this miniseries is for you! Buy my new book Wrestling a Walrus, HERE! "becauseOne" is an online platform that connects people's passions with the needs of those served by non-profit organizations. This remarkable initiative sprang from the collaborative vision of sisters Stephany Dolan and Stacia Jones and was driven by their family's desire to strengthen community and make it easier to help others. We look at how to use becauseOne to get involved with organizations that match your specific areas of interest. And, as part of our discussion about the enthusiasm and challenges around developing their idea, Stephany and Stacia explain how elevating the good being done in the world is a key part of their vision. I’m excited to bring you this discussion because the platform is transforming how we give while also serving as an antidote to online negativity. With becauseOne, anyone can embrace philanthropy, spread positivity, and witness the direct impact of their contributions. Thank you for listening! Buy my NEW book Wrestling a Walrus, HERE! Most of us look long and hard for reasons to avoid therapy. And, granted, therapy is not the only modality for emotional healing. Talking with friends and exercise and travel and dozens of other things can help the healing process. But, only therapy is therapy. Ultimately, THINKING about starting therapy is way harder than ACTUALLY starting therapy and it’s because of these three myths. People tend to think that starting therapy means: Something is wrong with me. (Not true.) I have failed. (Again, not true.) I have to know why I want it to start it. (No, you don’t.) If you’ve been thinking about starting therapy, don’t wait until the walls are crashing down around you. Taking that first step is easier than you think. If starting therapy seems scary and disempowering, consider this—therapy can be whatever you want it to be. Thank you for listening. Jealousy is often seen as a negative emotion. And let’s be honest, it doesn’t feel great when we experience it. BUT, what does it look like when we approach our jealousy with a little compassionate curiosity? In my experience, jealousy is calling our attention to a deeper desire that’s hiding inside us. Like every emotion, jealousy can be a great teacher. It can show us that there is something we want or something we want more of. Jealousy can also signal that we are ready for a change. Oftentimes, however, we can get stuck on our way to clarity. Comparison, criticism, and complaining are common traps. If you’re feeling stuck, this episode is a good companion to our Listener’s Favorite episode on Desire (Ep 81), which we featured just a few weeks back. Journaling is another useful tool. Talk about a throwback! From 2018, this is the first ever recorded episode of the Don’t Cut Your Own Bangs podcast. Not the first to air, but the first to be recorded. My guest, David Dellen , is a Harley Davidson dealer , a big brother in the Big Brother Big Sister Program, and also MY HUSBAND. He is an incredible leader and entrepreneur with a lot of valuable experience to share. I wish I could say that I asked him to be my first guest because of his experience and wisdom, but truthfully...it was because I was scared, insecure, and he said "YES." So, this conversation is the REAL beginning. You'll hear me make every possible mistake: interrupting, clinking glasses, poor sound quality, poor use of the mic, etc. But you know, I LOVE this episode. I love this man, and I know you will, too. Our special series focusing on the seven life themes in The Treasured Journal continues with the second in a two-part discussion of relationships. This is a big topic that can include communication, boundaries, trauma, pleasure, needs identification, and more. But, here, I want to zero in on two specific concepts that I’ve found to be invaluable for myself and my clients—and I’m confident they will help you make the most of your journaling: Relationships are like mirrors The relationship fear loop Working through relationship “stuff” can take many forms and journaling can be one of our most effective tools. That’s why I recommend it to almost everyone! In the case of relationships, we’re able to learn a great deal about ourselves by examining how we feel about, how we treat, and how we respond to others. If you’re new to the series, it’s not too late to catch up. I am devoting the first podcast episodes of this year to a guided discussion of career, relationships, love, sex, money, family, and purpose—the major themes from The Treasured Journal. The series is designed to expand your ability to understand the role and influence these themes occupy in your life. It’s not essential that you use The Treasured Journal for this series of exercises—a plain pad of paper and pen will do. But, if you do use the journal, you can lean on the questions, prompts, and sentence stems that, along with these podcasts, will help you move past the blank page. We continue with a special series of exercises that will be our focus over the coming weeks. With each podcast, I’ll examine one of the seven life themes in The Treasured Journal: career, relationships, love, sex, money, family, and purpose. Journaling is one of the most powerful tools we have for gaining clarity and understanding of ourselves, which in turn, helps us advocate for ourselves, create space when we need it, and engage in constructive conversations that otherwise might feel overwhelming. This episode is the first of a two-part look at relationships. It’s where 90% of sessions start with my new clients. People want to talk about heartache, frustration, or anger with regard to their partner or someone else in their life—but ultimately, discussion of the relationship reveals work that needs to be done by the individual. And that’s okay; it’s a good place to start. We want to be seen and heard and we want other people to be there for us, but we need clarity on what “being there” looks like. So, when journaling about relationships, start with the following prompts: What do I really feel? What do I really want? How can I satisfy that for myself with some small action? It’s not essential that you use The Treasured Journal for this series of exercises—a plain pad of paper and pen will do. But, if you do use the journal, you can lean on the questions, prompts, and sentence stems that, along with these podcasts, will help you move past the blank page and gain the type of clarity that comes from meaningful self-reflection. I am excited to announce a very special series of exercises that will be our focus over the next seven to nine weeks. With each podcast, I’ll examine one of the seven life themes in The Treasured Journal: career, relationships, love, sex, money, family, and purpose. Whether you’re experienced at journaling or brand new to it, I encourage you to take advantage of these guided exercises to explore the seven themes in your life. Journaling is one of the most powerful tools we have for gaining clarity and understanding. Understanding is empowering and freeing—it helps us advocate for ourselves, create space when we need it, and engage in constructive conversations that otherwise might be overwhelming. It’s not essential that you use The Treasured Journal for these exercises—a plain pad of paper and pen will do. But, I recommend that you lean on the questions, prompts, and sentence stems in the journal. Along with this series of podcasts, they will help you move past that blank page and gain the type of clarity that comes from meaningful self-reflection. Get a copy of THE TREASURED JOURNAL - https://danielleireland.com/journal In this episode, we begin our series with a discussion of “career” because people tend to have a lot of unconscious bias, complicated feelings, and self-identity wrapped up in their careers. So it’s worth examining how we perceive its value and its effect on us. Additionally, there is a unique emotional tension for women who choose to leave their careers to raise children. Within that context, we ask these questions about career to get your journaling juices flowing: How do I know which internal voice to listen to when one is telling me to rest and another is pushing me to do that thing that seems so important? When meeting someone and introducing myself, how quickly does my career come up? Or, conversely, do I avoid talking about my work? When I receive criticism, how do I react? How long do I dwell on the feedback? Do I start most weeks feeling some level of dread or enthusiasm about the week? Thanks for listening to the Don’t Cut Your Own Bangs podcast. Sheena Birt is the owner of Color Story Studio, a custom design studio that turns brick-and-mortar businesses into destinations people can’t wait to visit. Color Story Studio is known for creating one-of-a-kind installations for a variety of high-profile locations in and around Indianapolis. Her work has been featured at Dior in Chicago and Two Chicks District Co. (the store owned by the women of HGTV’s Good Bones), corporate lifestyle brands (such as Anthropologie), and Newfields, an art institution the studio partners with each year to create an immersive, multi-room installation inside the historic Lilly House. While Sheena’s reputation and portfolio are impressive, her path from graphic designer at a t-shirt shop in Terre Haute to the owner and creative force behind a highly sought-after design studio has not been a straight line. We discuss career fits and starts, confidence, collaboration, trust, burnout, asking for help, and the reluctance to jump in. Sheena also shares her search for inspiration, the benefits of being open to new things, and a surprising social media strategy. I’m sure you’ll enjoy this inside look at a business we don’t often hear much about. Sheena’s insights will be of special interest for anyone considering a career in retail store and visual design, merchandising, and consulting. There really is no escaping the year-end holidays. From decorations to music to parties, the season is everywhere! And, with the season, comes the expectation that this is a festive time of year and you had better get on board and be grateful. We love and encourage feelings of gratitude. Gratitude feels good and we want to feel good, right? But gratitude can go very wrong when it doesn’t allow for a full range of emotion. When there is no space to feel anything else, gratitude can tip over into toxic positivity. So, this is a discussion of what gratitude really is and how we can access it in a healthy, authentic way. Because gratitude is a feeling, practicing gratitude without actually feeling gratitude is an empty exercise. But when we are truly in a state of gratitude, we are creating new neural pathways in the brain. So, I also share a few techniques for a gratitude practice that can help you develop those pathways: Doing mirror work Telling someone what you love/appreciate/respect/value about them Asking someone what they love/appreciate/respect/value about you Journaling Just as we’ve been conditioned over the years to think negative thoughts, these techniques and others can recondition the brain—and being able to access the new pathways literally can be lifesaving. I started the "Don’t Cut Your Own Bangs" podcast to explore the "messy middle," that place between the before and after photo. It can also be thought of as the gap between how we are feeling and how we think we should be feeling. The middle doesn’t only exist during the year-end holidays, but as we’re closing in on that time of year, the gap between how we feel and how we want to feel can seem especially wide. To deal with the stress and business of the holiday season, we must first acknowledge the stress within ourselves. Anxiety, depression, and burnout can result when we push for a sense of togetherness and not disappointing loved ones. Before we know it, joy gives way to the pulls of exhaustion and lonliness. I know that it's easier said than done, but we need to get clear on what we want and how we want to feel if we're going to have a chance at getting through this season. So, start with some questions: How am I feeling? How do I want to feel? How do our holiday traditions make me feel? How many things am I doing because I want to be doing them? Or, because I feel I have to do them? Am I being too hard on myself by trying to please others and meet their expectations? What do I want my holiday season to feel like? How does it usually feel? How willing am I to acknowledge what I truly want, knowing the discomfort that it might cause? Remember that "practice makes permanent." Our holiday traditions have a way of continuing even when they no longer serve us. Maybe it’s time to make some space for a new approach or even a new tradition or two. We’ll revisit this theme in upcoming episodes, so give it some thought. As always, feel free to reach out with questions, comments, or experiences that you might want to share. Lauren Rieker, RDN, is a registered dietitian and owner/manager of Collaborative Counseling & Nutrition, an outpatient nutrition and body image counseling center in Indianapolis. In this episode, I talk with Lauren about her own history with food, exercise, and health—and how it led her to pursue an approach to eating disorders, body image, and intuitive eating that emphasizes compassion, mindfulness, and holistic treatment. This is not a typical discussion about our bodies and food-related struggles. In today’s environment, virtually all women are affected by pervasive ideas—and often misinformation—about body weight, size, and shape. So, I hope you will join us as Lauren shares her experience and perspective on these and related topics: Eating disorders versus disordered eating Conventional diet culture and health outcomes Behaviors, satisfaction, and trusting our bodies Combining therapy services and nutrition for healthy living Be sure to register for Lauren's workshop on October 19th to learn more about intuitive eating (Follow her on Social Media to get the deets! Don't Cut Your Own Bangs

Let’s face it, sometimes things just don’t go as planned. But, how do we respond? Do we hang on fiercely to the original plan? Do we let go and adjust to the new situation? If we let go of the original plan, how do we know when to let go? A lot of my clients have been faced with this question lately. So, in this episode I share a recent experience of my own to explore these questions and more. We can learn a lot about ourselves when our plans are upended. All of us know the struggle of holding onto the promise of what could be rather than acknowledging the truth of what is. But that challenge, it turns out, can help us clarify what we want, why we want it, and how we want to feel. Maybe it’s time to rethink how we plan so that we can give proper attention to setting realistic expectations, listening to how we feel, and trusting in the idea of “lightly held” plans. In episode #42 from April 2022, Jen Petro and I discuss the benefits of taking a solo retreat. She first suggested the idea to me while working side by side at Cafe’ Patachou . I remember thinking, “Huh? Just go somewhere by myself, for myself, for no other reason than I want to?” It sounded indulgent, a little selfish, and OH SO NECESSARY. Saying yes to myself in this way changed my life. Truly. A solo retreat can drop your stress level and help you feel more settled, especially in times of uncertainty. If taking a solo retreat sounds appealing and like something you’re able to do, I encourage you to listen to the episode to learn more about this terrific approach to self care. Enjoy! In episode #42 from April 2020, Danielle and I talked about taking leaps of faith, what it means to push past what you believe is possible, and what it takes to live adventurously. Danielle and her wife, Kate Nolan, founders of DNK Presents , organize and guide empowering adventure retreats for groups and businesses. They focus on getting people to step outside their comfort zones, try something for the first time, and in turn, gain confidence through experiential learning and adventures. Don't Cut Your Own Bangs

This episode comes in the wake of another horrific school shooting and many of the people I’ve encountered over the past week are struggling because of it. So, I’m compelled to use this time to address the concept of fear brought on by secondary trauma and how we can get stuck trying to process that fear. Through biologic evolution, our bodies have been hardwired with the classic fear responses: fight, flight, freeze, and fawn. Often we respond with fear even when the danger or trauma does not pose an immediate physical threat to us. Typically, these reactions are involuntary. Our bodies make the decision to respond in a particular way regardless of whether the danger is real or perceived, primary or secondary. For many of us, our fear response appears not only because of a specific event or string of events, but also because the news outlets recount stories and images on seemingly endless repeat. We imagine the pain and heartache of the devastated families and consider the vulnerability of our own children. We are affected by the responses of our family, friends, and coworkers as well. Our social media feeds carry the strong emotions from the people we follow, and their reactions are served up right alongside the algorithms that are designed to activate us and keep us engaged as long as possible. When our bodies carry the weight of these chronic stressors it’s easy to get stuck in our corrosive emotions. But there are steps we can take to reduce our involuntary fear response. Here are just a few that I discuss in this episode: Exercise, go to the park, snuggle a pet, engage in simple touch Read, rather than watch, the news Limit the amount of time you spend consuming social media Most importantly, do what is best for you. If listening to this episode is not what you need right now, that’s okay. Come back next week. If you choose to listen, I hope it brings you some relief. In this Listener’s Favorite from November 2020, I revisit compassion fatigue and empathy with Liesel Mertes. Liesel is a workplace empathy consultant and founder of Handle with Care Consulting . In the wake of Covid, workplace empathy has taken on even greater importance, but so too has the need for compassion and empathy in every aspect of our lives today. For many of us, the lines between work and home and school have been blurred and it seems that nearly everyone is struggling with fatigue and the current and residual stress from worrying about and taking care of ourselves, our loved ones, and our community. In this episode, Liesel shares her own profound experience with loss. Her journey has changed her perspective on what it means to be well and has transformed her ability to teach valuable lessons on how to be a better partner, a better friend, a better coworker, and a better leader. Even though loss can be heavy, our discussion is light. We approach the subject in a warm and gentle way. Episode 100 of Don’t Cut Your Bangs is here! What. In. The. World. How did this happen? What a wonderful wonderful (written 2x for emphasis) thing to write and say. In this week’s episode, I enlisted the help of a friend and coach, Juanita Molano Para . She’s a former guest turned temporary host that took me down memory lane, and together we explored the following: What does celebration mean? Why I had such a hard time figuring out how I wanted to celebrate reaching the 100th episode. Hint - celebration of accomplishments is vulnerable, sweaty, and kind of uncomfortable. And, because I didn’t know how I wanted to do it - I didn’t want to do it at all. How have I changed over the course of making this podcast, and how it’s evolved since episode 1. How experiencing comparison can pop up when you least expect it, and why chasing the feeling of “being enough” will always leave you feeling strung-out, unstable and sleepy. There have been SO MANY moments when I’m in a session with a client where I think to myself, “Gah! I wish more people could hear this!” Enter - Session Reflections. These solocasts are my way of letting you be a fly on the wall for some of the most incredible insights that my psychotherapy clients experience. The details about who they are will be omitted to protect their privacy, as well as many of the details about their specific experience. What will be shared are profound insights, BIG hearted questions, and lessons that I find myself thinking about hours after these sessions are over. Think of this like a little dose of therapy, but without all the work and you get to skip to the end. In this episode, I talk about validation and boundaries. More specifically, what do we do when people we love don’t understand, support or agree with what we’re feeling? In his words, "I've talked about WACO more in the past couple of months than in my entire career, but if you don't know history you're destined to repeat it." Meet Carey Anderson, a former Broadway performer turned therapist. Carey and I sit down to talk about what it looks like to put yourself out there and get rejected - over and over and over again. What we both learned from our time in the performing arts, and what led to making the career leap to psychotherapy. What I love about this episode is how well it demonstrates that though the details of our life are so diverse, the things we want out of life are the same. We want our life to have meaning, we want to be of value to others, we want to know we matter. Carey and I explore how we help our clients in these areas, and how we navigate them ourselves. Don't Cut Your Own Bangs

Today, I want to talk about taking a step back and listening to your emotions, but what does it mean exactly? Examples would look like: Feeling irritable or overly tired Having some form of difficulty in your everyday routine Unclear on why you are feeling a certain way More often than not, we can determine what is contributing to our changes in mood. However, there are times when it’s hard to pinpoint the root cause of your distress, and that’s when our emotions are trying to tell us something. In this episode, I want to talk about my self-reflection and how I’m finally at a place where I can feel when something is off. Not just conceptually, but knowing that my emotions are information and a key component to understanding myself and finding more peace and joy. I’m also going to talk about the realization that I had and how it slowly became clearer during maternity leave and while giving birth. Don’t worry; we’re not going to be talking about birth and babies. But we are going to be talking about what I like to call the “messy middle” To do that, I want to walk you through my realization and how I was able to create space to question it, get curious and look at it from different angles, and how that led to my the result. Hopefully, by listening to this, you may be able to get a feeling of your own that you want to get curious about, and hopefully, this can be beneficial to wherever you are in your emotional health and emotional wellness journey. Don't Cut Your Own Bangs

Welcome back!!! It feels so good to be back in front of the microphone and talking with you all again. Many of you know that I have been on maternity leave for the last few months. Once a week, maybe even more than that, I started thinking about making the transition and getting back into work and coming off of maternity leave, which is crazy because maternity leave suggests that I was not working and taking the time to do what exactly? Now, we all know what maternity leave looks like, of course. However, coming out of this so-called “maternity leave” and stepping back into work, I’m scratching my head because I’m working but also still “mothering,” right? I’m still wrapping my head around how everything in life has changed, from parenthood to motherhood, but I’m still the same person. That’s why I’m excited to be back because this space that I’ve created allowed me to express my curiosity, feelings, and every aspect of my life that is too confusing to deal with alone. The beautiful part about this conversation that we will have today is that you don’t have to do it alone, and the best things in life are shared. And if you’re listening to today’s episode, you are probably trying to figure things out just like the rest of us cause Lord knows that I'm still trying to figure it out myself. This stage, I lovingly call - > Embrace the suck. The truth is, change is hard. Even when we know it's good for us and ESPECIALLY when it's something we really really want. The greater our desire: ✔️The higher the stakes ✔️The more we have to lose ✔️The more vulnerable we feel if it doesn't work out "Embracing the suck" doesn't mean that every step along the way will be a painful one. What it means is that even when it's hard, even when you doubt yourself -> you can move forward anyway. Waiting to feel comfortable before you start may mean you're waiting a loooooooong time. Don't wait. You're worth it. And what you desire most may just be on the other side of this last step! Enjoy! Buy my NEW book Wrestling a Walrus, HERE! What ACTUALLY leads to change? It's usually one of two things: Discomfort or Desire "I'm in pain, and I want out." "I'm frustrated, and I want to feel better." "I'm bored, and I want to feel inspired." Knowing what the catalyst is for you can be powerful exercise AND can help you stay on track. When we're ready for change there are 3 things we often feel, say, or do: We feel - Frustrated, Tired, Anxious We say - "Ugh!", "This has to stop.", "This sucks!" We do - Hit snooze, avoid, procrastinate Join me for the next 4 weeks as we explore our relationship with change, and hopefully learn to love it. Enjoy! Buy my NEW book Wrestling a Walrus, HERE! Her experiences have taught her the value in saying "Yes" - even when you don't feel ready, and how to learn from every mistake. More importantly, she wants to help you do the same. Professional podcast manager and co-host of Two Sisters and a Cult , Alesia Galati and I explore questions like: How do I know what are my original thoughts vs my training? What do I really want my life to look like? What does it mean when the people our lives don’t agree? We relate on a shared sentiment of being in our mid 20’s, looking around at our lives and asking, “Who’s life am I really living?” We also explore the impact of someone you admire confirming the worst fear you have about yourself and how this affects behavior, “This must be true. It’s the thing I’ve been afraid to admit to myself and they see it too.” We also talk about the differences between being led to follow our own instincts vs following someone else’s. Similarities between how cult leaders lead and current coaching and marketing strategies. The core lesson we come back to over and over again - at the end of the day the person who’s trust you must keep is your own. Enjoy! Today's episode is all about healing. Specifically as it relates to - emotional healing emotional recovery emotional work About a week ago a client that I'd been working with for about 5 months asked me, "How do you know when you're done?" We explored the question for a little while, and what became clear was that she wanted to know - "...when I've healed what I need to heal, and how do I really know when I've made progress?" The short answer is that the less activated a painful emotion is in you - anger, grief, worry, sadness, frustration, etc. - indicates how healed a memory, experience, or relationship is within you. I this episode I explore the language we use to identify where healing work is needed. For example - Feeling activated vs Triggered I also dig into a recent experience in my life where I had some healing work to do and how I navigated that process. Casey has a grounded quality about her and the type of authenticity that seems to say, "Yeah. Tough things happen. You're going to figure it out, and if you need a hand give me a call." I loved this conversation, and I know you will too. Get ready to sit back, relax, and learn from Casey Jordan. Connect with Casey HERE. Last June at 13 weeks pregnant, I experienced a miscarriage. The physical, mental, and emotional toll the experience took on my husband and myself was heavy. I knew shortly after this was a story I wanted to share and needed to tell, in part for my own healing (I'm an external processor). I also felt this was my way to honor the grace that had been given to me. I now recognize that - in the early stages of healing - part of my recovery was credited to a group of nurses who came into my hospital room, took my hand, looked me in the eye and shared their story. Their generosity was like a salve to my heart, and likely the only thing I could've handled hearing. Not - "It'll be okay." But rather - "You're not alone." If this is a message you need to hear please know - You are not alone. It was also equally as important for me to share all of the confusing shades and colors that came out of this experience. Not just the obvious grief, but the way it brought my husband and I closer together. The way we used inappropriate humor to laugh through our tears, and how it informed the choices we made moving forward. Thank you for being on this journey with me. We're in this together. Where do baby goats, farmer's markets, and fighting food scarcity in Indianapolis meet? One woman ---> Erin Peckinpaugh. Erin, is bravery personified. Upon reflection, it's clear that she trusted an internal knowingness that her career path needed to change in a major way- AND she didn't gloss over her accompanying experiences with uncertainty and doubt. When we're in the midst of a major life transition, it's nearly impossible to see ourselves as brave because feeling terrified is such a big part of change. What encouraged her to push through was the story of a young boy who with a patch of dirt and a handful of seeds, fed his neighbors and shortly thereafter, his community. If you've been thinking about making a change in your life, you may want to keep a journal handy for this episode;) Ways to connect with me: Buy my NEW book Wrestling a Walrus, HERE! Hi, I'm Danielle Ireland , and I love talking to people. So much so that I made it my profession, and now solicit friends and colleagues to talk about their life with a microphone in their face;) The purpose of this podcast is to remedy the "I'm alone," "I suck," and "everyone seems to have it all figured out but me" feelings . I wanted to remind myself, and you, we aren't alone. I am endlessly fascinated by people who, in the face of fear, try to make their dreams a reality & who can find the joy or humor in the struggle. I LOVE a good story; a story of fear, doubt, and eventually TRIUMPH (the hero's journey). The only problem was that in my real life, I felt like I was surrounded by before-and-after stories... Before - "I used to feel miserable, scared, and alone...just like you." After - "NOW, I'm happy, amazing, and everything is awesome!" I'd hear these stories, or see these images on social media and think, "SWEET! Me too! Sign me up!" Then, I'd go to do the work, and fall flat on my face. I wanted to hear more about the messy middle. What happens when things don't work out? What did the journey look like, feel like, smell like, taste like, etc. on your way to the top??? I invite you to join on my journey through the messy middle (Brene' Brown). It won't be perfect, but it will be a helluva good time.
