APARTMENT OWNER GROUP IN INDIA CALLS FOR ELEVATOR ARDS Automatic rescue devices (ARDs) in elevators are being demanded by The Federation of Apartment Owners Associations (FAOA) in Ghaziabad, India, in light of numerous lift-related accidents, The Times of India reports. FAOA met with the local development authority on May 9, asking that ARDs — which bring the lift cabin to the nearest floor for passengers to exit in case of malfunction — be mandatory before completion certificates are issued. Since 2015, public-interest litigation has been pending in an Indian high court to enact a lift act in Uttar Pradesh that would include mandatory ARDs, following the lead of neighboring states. FAOA President Alok Kumar said the federation had previously sought a referendum requiring member housing societies to install ARDs, which has been done in nearby cities, but residents did not want to pay for them. A ruling by the authority would remedy that, he said. CHILD RESCUED FROM ESCALATOR MISHAP IN CHINESE MALL An off-duty police officer rescued a three-year-old girl from potentially serious injury on an escalator in a shopping mall in Zhengzhou, China, the Mirror reported on May 9. Video shows the child walking away from her mother to the outside of the balustrade, then grapping the handrail and being pulled upward. She was dangling approximately 65 ft. from the floor when the policeman ran up the steps and pulled her to safety. TWO CONSTRUCTION WORKERS DIE IN ELEVATOR FALL IN FLORIDA A construction lift attached to the side of a condominium building in Naples, Florida, plunged 70 ft. on May 9, resulting in the deaths of two construction workers who were on it, Fox 47 News reports. The Naples Fire Department confirmed the fatalities, and OSHA was on the Gulfshore Boulevard scene investigating. 30-STORY MELBOURNE APARTMENT BUILDING COMPLETE 661 Chapel Street, a 30-story, 116-unit apartment building in Melbourne’s South Yarra, is complete and 70% sold, mostly to owner-occupiers from Australia, The Urban Developer reports. Designed by architecture firm Bird de la Coeur with floor-to-ceiling windows, it is Malaysian developer Gamuda Land’s first Australian project and has been under construction since 2016. Bank financing allowed Gamuda to complete the project in May, ahead of schedule. Gamuda says it intends to pursue other projects in Melbourne.
