Did you know that your diet could be related to mental health issues like anxiety and depression? On this week’s episode of Embracing Your Season, host Paige Clingenpeel discusses several takeaways about diet and how that correlates with anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. We need to be mindful of what we are putting in our bodies and how it is affecting our everyday health.

Takeaways:

  1. Stimulants - Caffeine, soda, energy drinks, coffee and some teas are examples of stimulants that can affect our bodies in negative ways.
  2. Make a food diary - What are we eating and drinking that can have a negative impact and correlate with anxiety symptoms?
  3. Sugar - How much processed sugar are we consuming? Sugar hits the same part of our brain as the pleasure center.
  4. Food allergies - They can cause headaches, inflammation and impact your body in negative ways. The majority of the “feel good” chemicals come from your gut so if you are feeling awful, it might be that you need to heal your gut.
  5. Water - It’s a natural purifier. Some anxiety symptoms come from lack of hydration.
  6. Vitamins and minerals - What fruits, vegetables and proteins are you eating? The food diary can help with this in order to keep track of what vitamins and supplements your body might not be getting so you can add them into your routine.
  7. Sleep - Lack of sleep can increase mental health issues like depression, anxiety, irritability, and conflict resolution skills. Sleep helps heal our bodies and restore it.
