Guest Bio:
In his formative years, he was raised in a family led by grandparents that operated a conservation camp and spent time fighting forest fires in Wyoming, Utah, and New York. As a wildlife biologist, he has performed site investigations and applies his ecological knowledge to planning and conservation efforts related to energy development, natural resource management, and water resource management. As a lawyer, he conducts legal research on topics affecting natural resource and energy and water planning efforts, specifically as they relate to management policies and environmental laws such as the National Environmental Policy Act and the Endangered Species Act. From endangered salmon issues in the Pacific Northwest to oil spill restoration in the Gulf of Mexico, to large river ecosystem restoration and grizzly bear restoration, he has assisted federal agencies in navigating environmental laws to develop scientifically sound and legally defensible management plans, programs, and strategies. He has contributed to national endeavors such as the Department of the Interior’s initiative on adaptive management. Internationally, he worked with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection for the Republic of Georgia, conducting stakeholder meetings and developing statutory amendments to strengthen the laws and regulations of its protected areas. From these experiences, he has gained valuable insight into both natural resource conservation and energy and water issues, science, policy, and stakeholder perspectives across the country and the world. As a Principal Environmental Project Manager with HDR, Inc., he assists his clients in meeting their environmental missions and regulatory requirements. Mike currently serves as the President of NAEP and leads the biological resources working group. He is a founder, past President, and current Vice President of Minnesota Association of Environmental Professionals.
