Still Catholic After All These Years
Manage episode 441546967 series 2856130
First of all up front and out of the gate, I am pro-choice, believe women should be on the altar, any sexual abuser should be punished to the extremes of the law, and I go to confession when I am lonely. Having stated all this, I am still Catholic. In my case Catholicism is in my DNA from birth. It is family tradition, political association, martyrs during the troubles, and faith. Not just being Irish, but Irish Catholic. From altar boy to working in a diocese I have seen the politics, and the maneuverings, but I have always been able to separate myself from it. For the longest time I thought when my father looked at me and uttered, "jumping Jesus, Mary and Joseph" it was an actual prayer. You can take the altar from the boy, but not the altar boy. I now I find out that Trump said if I vote for a certain candidate being Catholic, I need to get my head examined? Well, it won't be the first time I was told that.
