Jemar Tisby Talks 'The Spirit of Justice,' Unsung Black Heroes, and Fighting for a Better World

Historian Dr. Jemar Tisby speaks with Faithfully Podcast host Nicola A. Menzie about his latest book, The Spirit of Justice: True Stories of Faith, Race, and Resistance. In his book, Tisby explores the stories of 50 diasporic Black figures who, through their resistance, advocacy or activism, “courageously confront[ed] racism instead of being complicit with it.” In telling their stories, he examines what can be learned “from their example, their suffering, their methods, and their hope.”

The conversation also delves into the distinctions between resistance, advocacy, and activism, highlighting the importance of recognizing various forms of justice-oriented activities. He also discusses the necessity of telling the whole truth about history, especially in the face of revisionist narratives and what he describes as a “whitelash.”
