FIBER Podcast 05 - Mattikk

Vinyllover Mattikk treats us to a vicious techno set with an occasional trip to raw analogue house, ending with deep dubstep.

The talented DJ explores the ambiguity of dubstep and techno, characterized by its 4×4 beats and completed with deep subs and dubby synths. Important influences to Mattikk are Scuba, Martyn, 2562, Sigha, Marcel Dettmann, Shed, Shifted, Boddika, Shackleton and Burial.

“I don’t like happy music much.” Mattikk says, as he looks back at his musical development. His love for the darker side of music has its roots in the days of UK hardcore, breakbeat and drum & bass. Over time he also began exploring the element of techno. Productions by Raiden (Offkey/Renegade Hardware), Current Value (Position Chrome) and the deep bass lines found on albums by Burial (Hyperdub) , Pinch (Tectonic) and Vex’d (Planet Mu) were amongst his sources of inspiration. Along this road his taste evolved towards the crossover between the sub-streams of dubstep and techno, with Surgeon’s perfectly balanced sets as his great example.

The versatile nature of this talent can be drawn from the gigs he plays. He performed several times at Club R_aw, did a couple of mixes for the DUBieus crew in Utrecht and he’ll be playing Closer at the Melkweg this august.

In a world that is becoming more and more digitized, Mattikk remains a faithful vinyl collector. Being able to touch, smell and see the music is what makes this medium so attractive. Apart from this, vinyl distribution offers the opportunity to focus more on the design of record sleeves, like labels such as 3024 and Swamp81 do.

The illustration Mattikk chose for this set is “Whitechapel Road” by Ashes57. With its busy London shopping street, showing all sorts of incoherent elements, it serves as an analogy for different cultures coming together into one cohesive techno set.
