On the eve of the 53rd anniversary of the assassination of President Kennedy, we are diving into Oliver Stone’s JFK. Simultaneously, we’re crawling into a bottle of Brooklyn Black Ops. You know, to help us cope with the gravity of it all. Buckle up folks; the enigma is about to be unraveled.

BREWERY: Brooklyn Brewery

BEER: Black Ops 2015

Style: Imperial Stout

ABV: 11.5% +

IBU: Less than 35

More myth than legend, Brooklyn Black Ops is one of those rare beers that are more often discussed than enjoyed. This thick, robust, bourbon barrel-aged, delicious, enchanting Imperial stout is darker than night and boozier than a Dallas hobo (see JFK if you don’t get that reference). Adding to its mythical status its exceedingly rare availability (fewer than 12,000 bottles per year) and the closely guarded secrets of its recipe (all information concerning the brewing process of this beer have been redacted). (Perhaps that’s why so much of these show notes are in parenthesis).

FILM: JFK

DIRECTOR – Oliver Stone

STUDIO – Warner Bros.

BUDGET – $3 Million

IMDB

The assassination of President Kennedy was one of the most formative moments of the 20th century. The effects of it are still a part of our political landscape today. When Oliver Stone took up the challenge of bringing to life the definitive film on the subject, he took on not only the task of boiling down one of histories most baffling riddles into a coherent narrative, but also of creating a work of art that would transcend the time periods of its subjects AND of its creator. The result is a magnum opus; a dizzying array of elements unified by Stone’s dogged and vicarious search for the truth. It is a Pollock-esque melee of film stocks, visuals styles, story genres and performances. Oliver Stone’s JFK is a one-of-a-kind film, the impact and social relevance of which only deepens with age.

THIS PODCAST WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS. IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE FILM, CHECK OUT JFK, THEN COME BACK, CRACK OPEN A COLD BROOKLYN BLACK OPS AND JOIN US FOR THE DISCUSSION!
